MXA’S WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: WHAT YOU MISSED WHEN YOU HAD TO GO SEE YOUR NIECE’S GRADUATION FROM 3RD GRADE

FREDRIK NOREN’S FILL-IN RIDE AT JGRMX A HUGE SUCCESS

Fredrik Noren filled-in for Justin Hill at the JGRMX Suzuki team this weekend at the Southwick National and scored a 5th in moto one and a 7th in moto two to earn a top-ten finish. Noren was 7th overall at Southwick and is now 11th in 450 National points. It was a big weekend for JGR as they look like they finally have a healthy and fast 450 rider. Kudos to Fredrik.

SOUTHWICK RACE RESULTS: TWO WINNERS, BUT FOUR MOTO WINNERS

Marvin Musquin with the holeshot as Zach Osborne (16), Ken Roczen (94) and Joey Savatgy (17) give chase.

MXA’S FIRST RIDE OF THE 2020 KTM 450SXF

CLASSIC MXA TEST RIDER PHOTO: JODY & A FRIEND GO RIDING

Jody and his brave passenger crank this Wasp RT3 sidecar in a flat sweeper.

MXA’s Jody Weisel (above) pilots a Yamaha 650 Wasp RT3 sidecar at Saddleback while preparing for the California Sidecar Championships. Power came from a twin-cylinder Yamaha 650 four-stroke engine. With two riders, twin-cylinder engine, three wheels, leading link forks and an ultra-strong chassis, the all-up weight could easily exceed 800 pounds. As with most American sidecar races, the Whitney Brothers won, but Jody got to style out front for awhile. He decided not to take it up as a career choice.

MXA TEAM TESTED: STI HEAVY DUTY TUBES

128_MXAh16There is nothing worse for a motocross racer than a flat tire. Not only is your moto over, but you have to change the tube. When this happens to the MXA wrecking crew—and it does with some regularity, especially on KTMs, which come with paper-thin Pirelli lightweight tubes—we install STI Heavy Duty inner tubes. Not only are they twice as thick as a standard tube, but they are incredibly affordable.

WDIGITS? $12.95 (Heavy Duty rear), $9.95 (Heavy Duty front)Your friendly local dealer can order them for you.

STI inner tubes come in three different thicknesses: Heavy Duty (2mm thick), Extreme Duty (3mm thick) and Ultra Heavy Duty (4mm thick). We readily admit that we would never use an STI Extreme Duty or Ultra Heavy tube for racing because they would be overkill. The 3mm-thick Extreme Duty is best for Baja, desert racing, WORCS or GNCC, while the 4mm-thick Ultra Heavy Duty tube is so rugged that it’s best for 950cc adventure bikes (since a flat tire high in the Rockies could mean a night with the bears).stimctubesSTI does not make regular tubes. STI specializes in making thicker-than-stock heavy-duty tubes—and sales have rocketed up every month because so many people are looking for a flat-tire solution. The typical OEM tube is 0.8mm to 1mm thick. Manufacturers choose this type of tube for production-line use because it is both light and inexpensive to spec. STI tubes are anywhere from twice as thick to four times as thick. For example, the STI Heavy Duty tube is made from butyl rubber with a 2mm thickness. We originally started testing STI Heavy Duty inner tubes back in 2013 just to ensure that a test or photo session wouldn’t be ruined by an unexpected flat tire. We have run them ever since. They have a good track record—but there are lots of things that can damage rubber.

STI’s Heavy Duty tube is heavier than a regular tube. How much heavier? Our 110/90-19 Heavy Duty model was exactly 1 pound heavier than an OEM 1mm-thick tube. The extra weight is not exactly a performance enhancer, but neither is a flat tire. Sometimes you have to play it safe.

MXA RATING: If you are looking to avoid a flat tire, this is the tube you should run. Ryan Dungey and Ken Roczen don’t need heavy-duty tubes, but they don’t pay their own entry fees or change their own tires, either.

MIPS ACQUIRES GLIDE WEAR & ITS PATENTS

MIPS acquires the brand GlideWear and the associated patent rights. The asset purchase agreement to acquire the brand GlideWear and the patent rights associated with the GlideWear technology are owned by Tamarack Habilitation Technologies, Inc. (“Tamarack”). The purchase price iso approximately $1 million, payable in cash. The acquisition of the unique GlideWear technology is an important step in MIPS’ ambition to continue to develop and broaden its product offering. MIPS has, since the beginning of 2018, incorporated GlideWear in some of its brain protection solutions with successful results and taking full ownership of the GlideWear technology is a natural extension of the existing co-operation.

MIPS is a basically a plastic skull cap that allows a rider’s head to move up to 15mm inside the helmet to reduce rotational brain injuries.

The acquired technology is a two-layer, low-friction fabric that primarily has been used in medical applications to protect the skin from harmful friction and shear. As a part of the transaction, Tamarack has been granted a royalty free license by MIPS during an eight-year period to continue to use the technology for its existing medical applications. ”We are pleased with the acquisition of the GlideWear technology and the access to materials that will enhance our product portfolio. We started the development work with Tamarack some years ago and quickly realized the value of having the GlideWear technology in our product portfolio” says Max Strandwitz, CEO of MIPS.

GLEN HELEN GIVES $10,000 TO THE HIGH HOPES FOUNDATION FROM ITS RIDE DAY

Glen Helen’s Chad Tucker (right) hands High Hopes Head Injury Foundation director Mark Desmond (left) checks that total $10,000 from the racetrack’s Fan Appreciation Day.

The Glen Helen Fan Appreciation Day was a big success and all proceeds went to the High Hopes Head Injury Foundation. Glen Helen Raceway was able to deliver $10,000 to High Hopes in honor of Tom White, who before his passing was a huge contributor to the charity. On Saturday, May 25, Glen Helen opened up all of its racetracks, plus a six-mile off-road loop to any rider who wanted to come and ride. All Glen Helen asked for was a minimal donation to High Hopes (and a promise that Glen Helen would match any donation over the $10 minimum). Riders also received a free lunch and a live showing of that day’s Pala National in their museum. The riders came in great numbers and the vast majority gave generously to High Hopes. Glen Helen’s Chad Tucker was able to go to the High Hopes Foundation and hand them checks for both the rider donations and Bud Feldkamp’s matching funds that totaled $10,000. Glen Helen wants to thank all who participated.

MXA AD OF THE WEEK: MSR & THE ROOKIES OF THE YEAR

In 1984 Guy Cooper and Keith Bowen were the AMA Rookies of the Year (Keith in the 250 class and Guy in the 125 class) and both wore Malcolm Smith Racing (MSR) gear. You may not know that MSR recently closed its doors and went out of business, but luckily Rocky Mountain ATV/MC came onboard to save the brand.
