PALA 250/450 NATIONAL RESULTS: WILSON ICES 250 CAKE, VILLOPOTO CLINCHES 450 TITLE

In moto two, Chad Reed took the early lead, but fell down giving the front spot to Justin Barcia. Dungey and Villopoto had been working their way up together (Villopoto knew that all he had to do was tail Dungey to the finish line and he would be the 2011 450 Champion). The duo got by Reed and started to reel in Barcia. Dungey blitzed Barcia in the whoops and took the win, while Villopoto settled for a safe and sane third.

THERE WAS SOME CONCERN

There was some concern in the Dungey camp that he would be penalized for jumping off the track, riding on the wrong side of the banners and making a pass early in the second moto (which is in clear violation of the rules), but let’s be serious?this is the AMA rule book?it doesn’t apply to everyone. If Dungey had been penalized one place, then Justin Barcia would have won the Pala 450 National.

Ryan Villopoto became the 12th rider in AMA Pro Racing history to win the premier Supercross and AMA National titles in the same year.

“I didn’t want to just go out there and ride today,” said Villopoto. “I felt good in the first moto, and I went into the second just looking to stay out of trouble. We started off outdoors not very good, but we finally came around. It’s been a tough year. If it weren’t for Dungey’s DNF at Texas, I would have come up a little shy. But, things like that happen. The turning point was at Unadilla, when we brought out our new bike. We made a lot of progress there.”

Ryan Dungey has to give up the dual Championships (Supercross and National) that he won in 2010. “It was a great day,” said Dungey. “It’s been a long, hard-fought season. I’m bummed I couldn’t come out on top, but there is a sense of happiness along with it. Every race, you had to be on top of your game. Every single week, just trying to get more out of yourself. This is definitely the toughest season of my career. I know I gave it my all, and did everything I can, so I can walk away happy knowing that.”

The 250 class, although settleD a week ago in Dean Wilson’s favor, had lots of action as Dean Wilson and Blake Baggett had a dogfight in moto one, and Wilson made a spirited charge to catch and pass neo-pro Justin Bogle on lap 11 for the win. Wilson went 1-1, Baggett 2-3 and Marvin Musquin 4-4.

Wilson victory was the 12th out of 12 for his Pro Circuit team. Pro Circuit went one-two-three in the standings.
