JUSTIN HILL GOING TO JGRMX SUZUKI FOR 2018

Justin HillJustin Hill—on the move again.

MXA’s Jody Weisel was at Pro Circuit on Tuesday working on a Yamaha YZ450F issue and had lunch with Mitch Payton. Mitch said that Pro Circuit has signed Adam Cianciarulo to a new contract and that Joey Savatgy and Austin Forkner were returning to the team for 2018. Justin Hill, who just came back to the Pro Circuit team for 2017, after bouncing around from Pro Circuit to Red Bull KTM to Troy Lee Designs, will be leaving again for the newly configured Joe Gibbs Suzuki team. Hill did win the 2017 AMA 250 West Supercross Championship, but did his reputation no favors during the first seven AMA 250 Nationals. Hill, who had a shot at a 450 spot at Team Kawasaki for 2018, shot that down by barely making the top ten. He has missed the remaining four Nationals with a wrist injury.

JGRMX plans to field four 250 riders and two 450 riders (although Phil Nicoletti will probably be one of the 250 riders in the 250 East Supercross series and then become a 450 rider for the AMA Nationals). Weston Peick reportedly still has a year to go on his JGR contract so he is one of the JGR’s 450 riders for 2018. That leaves one 450 opening. Did Justin Bogle’s win at Budds Creek give him a shot to stay on Suzuki (especially since his last race for RCH Suzuki is this weekend—RCH’s Broc Tickle will most likely end up at Marvin Musquin’s KTM teammate)? Or does Justin Barcia have a chance of staying at JGR (albeit with a big pay cut). All of these questions, and many more, will be answered in due time.

IS HRC BORROWING TECH FROM THE R&D GENIUS THROTTLE BODY?

Honda’s HRC race department went to the trouble to build a rotating barrel throttle body that looks amazingly like the R&D Genius throttle body.

Here is a close-up look at the Dean Dickinson-designed Genius throttle body, which has been available since 2011 and was used by the Geico Honda team on their CRF250s a few years ago. Instead of a butterfly, the Genius uses a rotating barrel that when fully open disappears to allow undisturbed air flow.

HOW THE THE R&D GENIUS THROTTLE BODY WORKS

_1123719Throttle closed.

_1123725Throttle half open.

_1123731Throttle wide open.

R&D’s stroke of genius was to invent a rotating barrel design. Instead of a flat slide or a butterfly valve, R&D designed an elliptical barrel that rotates inside the throttle body’s venturi. The elliptical barrel rotates completely out of the way at full throttle, and because of its smooth shape, the air flows over it with less disturbance. Why replace the common butterfly valve? No matter whether the throttle is open or closed, a butterfly always creates turbulence that lessens fuel velocity. Why do manufacturers uses butterfly valves? Butterfly valves aren’t aerodynamic, but they are cheaper to make.

The R&D Genius throttle body is designed to improve low-end power, partially open throttle response and pickup through the midrange. The smooth-flowing characteristics of the Genius design have the biggest effect when engine vacuum is low and fuel misting is compromised. Once the throttle body is wide open, the Genius’ barrel is completely out of sight. It smooths out any irregularities, boosts horsepower and make the bikes equipped with it easier to ride. It was a clear-cut improvement in the brain-to-throttle equation, which is probably why the Geico Honda and Doug Dubach used it. In fact, several factory road racing teams are using rotating barrel throttle bodies on their race bikes—including the Honda of 250cc MotoGP Champion Alex Marquez. If you don’t sell a rotataing barrel throttle body, you aren’t violating R&D’s patent—thus, factory race team can race with it.

This isn’t a cheap mod. It involves a complex, CNC-machined piece and a new electronic ECU (supplied). It is a serious racing product that improves throttle response and power, but since it isn’t visible to the naked eye, it’s not for the status conscious guy. It is designed to take a hopped-up engine to the nth degree. It retails for $1500 and you can learn more at www.r1dean.com.

WHO TO LOOK OUT FOR IN JACKSONVILLE

Clement Desalle held second in the 450 Championship for most of the 2017 season, but then Jeffrey Herlings started making the podium and caught the Kawasaki rider. Herlings leads Desalle by 13 points with three races left. The next time they meet will be on September 3 in Jacksonville.

KTM’s Kid’s Army is made up of Jorge Prado (61) and red plate holder Pauls Jonass (31).

Suzuki’s Jeremy Seewer is the only rider who had the speed to stay with Pauls Jonass in the 250 points chase, and even though he has been winning GPs as of late, Jonass is always standing next to him on the podium—so Jonass’ points lead has remained at 45 points. Seewere has to go to the 450 class in 2018.

Jeffrey Herlings came around, after an injury-plagued early series, to prove that he is the heir apparent to Tony Cairoli for 2018.

MXA_MissionLE_MPU_728x90

Last week’s 250 podium was topped by Jeremy Seewer, who designs his own IXS gear.

American Darian Sanayei is an almost unknown American doing well in the 250 GPs. Neither Sanayei nor Thomas Covington have ever raced an AMA National or Supercross

Former World Champion and 2015 USGP winner Romain Febvre has not had much to cheer about in 2017, but he won a moto at the Swedish GP last week.

Conrad Mewse is the new British hope as Shaun Simpson and Tommy Searle are near the end of the GP careers.

The perfect spectator bleachers are made by nature. The Swedish fans watch 2016 450 World Champion Tim Gajser go 1-2 from the natural ampitheatre.

Jorge Prado has been overshadowed by 250 KTM teammate Pauls Jonass, but he was second to Jonass’ third in Sweden.

Thomas Covington was a surprise addition to Team USA for the 2017 MXDN in October. Covington is currently 6th in 250 World Championship points

From this angle, the Swedish track looks like a good site for an urban renewal project, but its just foreshortening of a long lens.

MXA_MissionLE_MPU_728x90

Gautier Paulin (21) and Evgeny Bobryshev (777) used to be teammates at TeamHonda—until Honda let Paulin go. Now Honda has informed Bobryshev that his services are not needed in 2018.

Two weeks ago Benoit Paturel won the Swiss 250 GP, last week in Sweden he was 7th.

The 250 Grand Prix riders head for the first turn in Uddevalla

Last year Thomas Kjer Olsen won the 250 EMX support class. This year he has won a 250 GP and is 4th in 250 Grand Prix points.

The old man was thought to be dead in the water after being waxed by Romain Febvre in 2015 and Tim Gajser in 2016—but they got injured and Tony Cairoli (222) got healthy.

Febvre, Gajser and  Paulin on the 450 Swedish podium.

That is Romain Febvre in the lead at the start of the first 450 moto.

A BIKE YOU’VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE: VERTEMATI 495

1999 Vertemati 495.

The Vertemati 495 was the rarest of all bikes. Alvaro and Guido Vertemati were originally the Husqvarna importers for Italy, but when Cagiva purchased the Swedish brand (and moved it to Italy), the brothers switched their allegiance to Husaberg. In the early days of the Vertemati/Husaberg alliance the brothers fielded a high-end 500 Grand Prix racing team that was a contender for the crown. However, as the Vertemati brothers were gearing up to build a potpourri of special racing components, the Husaberg factory out-bid them for their star rider, Joel Smets. In the end, the Vertematis decided to build their own bike (although it relied heavily on the Husaberg top-end). The result was a very, one-off program with most parts built in-house at the brother’s small shop in Truggio, Italy. It was considered the greatest four-stroke ever made, but was it?

So few were made that it was never tested by anyone outside of the Vertemati payroll. Then, in 1999 MXA was given a Vertemati by the factory. We didn’t find it to be all that great. We roasted it for its awkward three-up tranny (with neutral at the bottom), 256-pound dry weight (34 pounds more than a 2018 KTM 450SXF), slack head angle (that made it corner like the Pacific Limited), bolt-together frame (which was a flexy flyer) and mismatched Marzocchi/Ohlins suspension (neither end was balanced). We called it a “train wreck” and suggested that the only thing this bike had going for it was its unavailability.

As you would expect Vertemati was incensed that MXA would criticize their iconic bike—and we never expected to hear from them again, but a year later they delivered us the 2000 Vertemati/VOR V503. When we uncrated the new Vertemati we were surprised to find that the bike had been redesigned. Gone was the three-up tranny. In it’s place was a standard-issue one-down/five-up unit. Gone was the slack Union Pacific head angle. The new model had the head pulled back to make the bike turn. Gone is the mismatched Marzocchi/Ohlins suspension package. Vertemati not only changed fork suppliers, but went from right-side-up to upside-down. It was less of a one-off project and more of a production machine (befitting the money thrown into the project by investors)

What did we think? The VOR/Vertemati would have been the best four-stroke motocross bike made—if Yamaha hadn’t introduced the YZ400 in the same time period. Given the reality of the YZ400, the Vertemati was still a sweet motorcycle. The engine was a thing of beauty. It’s powerband was blessed with a healthy output, predictable delivery and robust response. But it was a year too late.
