MXA’S WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: A WEEK OFF FOR THE STARS, BUT WHAT ABOUT US PEONS?

BAD NEWS FOR KTM! TONY CAIROLI’S 2019 SEASON IS OVER

Antonio Cairoli MXGP 2018 asiaTony will have an intimate relationship with that bag of ice in the next couple months.

Following surgery for a ruptured supraspinatus and the subscapularis tendon after crashing at the Latvian Grand prix. Tony Cairoli’s 2019 season is over. Doctor Tom Claes said that the surgery was successful, but that Cairoli will need to recovered for three to four months.

With Tony Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings on the sidelines, the highest placed KTM 450SXF rider is seventh place Glenn Coldenhoff, who is 232 points adrift of current 450 leader Tim Gajser.

SEE IT HERE, COMPLAIN SOME PLACE ELSE: THE 2020 AMA SUPERCROSS RACE SCHEDULE

Notably missing from the 2020 schedule is Nashville, New Jersey, Houston and Minneapolis.

Anaheim is the first race of 2020 on January 4, but the second race is in St. Louis, which means two long drives from Anaheim to St. Louis and then back to Anaheim for round three. Once back out west the series goes to Glendale, Arizona, followed by Oakland and San Diego. The 7th race will be in Tampa, with the 8th in Dallas and the 9th in Atlanta. Rounds 10 through 15 are in Daytona, Indianapolis, Detroit, Seattle, Denver and Foxborough. The big shocker is that after 23 years Las Vegas will not be the final round (it is race number 16). The finale race will be held in Salt Lake City. Vegas is currently building a new stadium, so maybe Feld is waiting for that.

REM “TWO WEEKS IN JULY SUMMER SIZZLER” STARTS SATURDAY, JULY 13

Summer has finally arrived in SoCal. Let’s enjoy. For more info go to www.remsatmx.com

HOLLAND IS THE FIRST COUNTRY TO ENTER A TEAM IN THE 2019 WORLD VET CHAMPIONSHIP “WORLD CUP OF NATIONS”

Dutch team captain Ralf Schmidt has a lot of Glen Helen experience.

Team Holland filed the first application to enter a team in the “World Vet Cup of Nations” to be run in conjunction with the 35th Annual Dubya World Vet MX Championships on November 2-3. Holland is the first to enter with team captain Ralf Schmidt, Rowdy Wagenaar and a third rider to be named later.

The first of three possible Irish teams is going to come from the town of Waterford. KTM’s David O’Connor (30) is the team captain with Kenny Power and Garry Sullivan filling out the effort.

Team Spain #1 is expected to be an all-Catalonian team of Agusti Vall, Xavi Costa and Kim Sunol (52).

The World Cup of Nations is a two-moto race for three-rider teams from each country. Each team must include an Over-30, Over-40 and Over-50 rider. Each country will be allowed up to 3 national teams consisting of 3 members each—the preferred team combo is one  30+ rider, one 40+, rider and one 50+ rider on the team. However, if a nation only has Over-40 and Over-50 riders in attendanceat the World Vet they can race with older riders in lieu of the Over-30 rider. Under no circumstances can a national team enter more than one Over-30 rider.

Dutchman Ralf Schmidt (73) has raced a lot at Glen Helen since he moved to American several years ago to become the TM distributor for the USA.

The teams will line up behind the starting gate in three separate rows—with the Over-30 riders on the first gate, Over-40 riders on the second gate and Over-50 riders on the third gate (if a team deosn’t have an Over-30 rider, it must designate one of its older riders to race in the Over-30 division). Riders will all receive race bibs indicating the country they represent and color-coded to represent their age group. Each age group will be scored separately, with the combined scores of all three riders over both motos added together (that would be six scores per national team) and the nation with the lowest score over the two-moto format will be the winning team and country.

In order for this to work, each nation’s three-man teams must apply to be accepted to represent their country. Applications are available now for three-man teams by Clicking Here for the application form. The applications need to be received by August 31st. The World Vet Cup of Nations’ executive committee will review all team applications and inform the teams by September 15, 2019, if they are accepted into this prestigious event. Individual riders can also apply and all-effort will be made to put them n one of the nations teams as a fill-in rider.

BELIEVE THIS 2020 FIM MXGP SCHEDULE AT YOUR OWN RISK

(Click on race schedule to enlarge) The highlights of the 2020 MXGP race schedule is that they don’t know where the first race will be, but they are sure that they will race twice in Indonesia and never in England and the the final round will be held in Turkey (against the express wishes of the teams and riders who want to have the final race in from of their loyal fans at the country near their Dutch/Belgian fans). In other news, China gets a round during the three weeks that the riders will spend in Asia in July. Switzerland is back on the schedule, as is Finland (at the Kymi-ring in Litti). And,  the Motocross des Nations will be held on September 27 in  France for the 9th time and at Ernee  for the third time (the last being in 2015).

It’s no secret that a lot of this schedule is arranged to chase after government tourist funds—not world class motocross facilities or even countries with a strong motocross following. They may tell you that Indonesia sells more motorcycles in a year than any of the western nations, but they don’t tell you that very, very few of those are motocross bikes or that the majority of them are 50cc to 125cc scooters, mopeds and street bikes.

Last year the first MXGP schedule was changed five times—with countries and events being dropped and replaced on a regular basis. In fact, Italy had three MXGP event in 2019 because it is the bail-out spot when some wishful thinking government funded race can’t come up with the reported $650,000 sanction fee.

GEE WHIZ! WHO’D A THUNK? YOUTHSTREAM RELEASES A REVISED MXGP SCHEDULE 24 HOURS AFTER THE ONE ABOVE

(Click on race schedule to enlarge) This is the first revision of the 2020 MXGP schedule. In just slightly over 24 hours the German Grand Prix, that was scheduled for May 24, has now been moved to May 31. Ignore the GP schedule above this one. In fact, ignore all GP schedules until the 2020 season is past its halfway mark of being over. From that point on you can trust that a Youthstream schedule is accurate.

MXA AD OF THE WEEK: THE ULTRA-GENIUSES OF YAMAHA

Can you name the three “Ultra-Geniuses of Yamaha” depicted in Yamaha’s 1995, 12-page, comic book-style, YZ ad. Don’t feel bad if you can only get one of the three. Two of the three means that you were paying attention 24-years ago. If you get all three right, you are probably a former Yamaha employee. The correct answer is at the bottom of the page

This is a 1982 Honda CR125. How can we tell at this angle? The 1981 CR125 had white radiator wings and a red engine. The 1983’s swingarm decal read “125R,” not “PRO-LINK.” The 1984 Honda CR125 had a disc front brake. Thus, it is a 1982 Honda CR125

ULTRA-GENIUSES ANSWER: (From left to right) Keith McCarty, Ed Scheidler and Don Dudek. At the end of the comic book was the “YZ Warrior Oath.” It read, “On my honor, I do hereby swear to be a guardian and upholder of smart engineering, the Yamaha Way, and all else that is good and right in the world! I promise to be loyal, steadfast and true, and to always be sympathetic and respectful of the sick and elderly — especially those who finish behind me.”
