GAS GAS IS STILL GAS GAS, BUT IT IS ALSO RIEJU

This teaser of what a 2020 Gas Gas EC300 will look like in Rieju livery.

Following KTM’s 60 percent acquisition of the Gas Gas’ parent company, the EC, XC, and GP lines of enduro bikes from GasGas will most certainly be replaced by KTM’s in-house engine and chassis technology. As a result, GasGas’ previous range of enduro bikes faces certain death. However, the Spanish Rieju brand has stepped in to take over the defunct Gas Gas models. Rieju’s production of the former 250cc and 300cc Gas Gas EC, XC and GP bikes will have the bikes rolling off the production line in June 2020. Rieju currently manufactures 12,000 motorcycles small motorcycles annually in its facilities in Figueres, near Barcelona, and exports 85% of its production to more than 40 countries. The 2020 Gas Gas EC, XC & GP two-stroke were dropped by KTM, but Rieju stepped up absorb the bikes.

Jordi Riera, CEO of Rieju, said, “This agreement allows Rieju an immediate presence in the off-road competition segment with larger capacity machines than usual for Rieju, as well as a significant expansion of our client portfolio, and important openings to new markets. We are very excited for this new adventure and the enormous challenge that this entails. We have enormous experience in our design, manufacture and distribution structure, so we are convinced that this project will be a success for our company.”

Rieju’s main source of business currently comes from the production and sale of small displacement scooters and mopeds, with the company churning out an average of 12,000 motorcycles per year.

YES, BUT WILL IT BAKE A CAKE?

REMEMBER THIS? MXA’S NAKED 2005 YAMAHA YZ250 TWO-STROKE

Back in 2005, when Yamaha introduced their first aluminum production frame, MXA wanted to showcase the unique, single backbone, cast aluminum frame, so we gave a nod to Magoo’s famous Maico photo, by figuring out how to get it to run without the gas tank.

In 2005, Yamaha unveiled the aluminum framed YZ250 (and we stripped it down to its naked aluminum for our photo shoot.) With two-stroke sales in the dumps in 2005, this bike was going to be either Yamaha’s crowing jewel or ultimate folly. Yamaha spent millions of dollars on the development of the most advanced two-stroke motocross bike of its time. Was it worth it?

Our fuel system couldn’t be seen and allowed enough fuel to do approximately two laps, which was more than enough to get all the photos we wanted. We refilled the custom-made fuel system as many times as necessary to get the photos from different angles.

Yamaha had rolled the dice. They hoped there were enough loyal two-stroke fans to appreciate the revolutionary development that produced the all-new smoker. They believed that an all-new bike would make the die-hards appreciate the machine enough to buy the smoker rather than the rising tide of four-strokes.

In the end, the results weren’t what they wanted them to be, although it is safe to say they weren’t heart broken about it. Why not? Two-stroke sales continued to plummet for Honda, Kawasaki and Suzuki (largely because they gave up, surrendered, waved the white flag and bought their own four-stroke advertising jargon), while Yamaha still had a revenue stream coming in from the two-stroke crowd. The big winner was KTM, who not only saw an opening with the Big Four’s lack to interest in two-strokes, but jumped at the chance to take over the two-stroke market. Today, the Austrian company sells more two-strokes than Honda, Kawasaki or Suzuki sell of their four-strokes.

Then, we put the gas tank, radiator wings and seat back on and went riding.

Over 15 years later, the 2005 YZ250 is still virtually the same bike that is produced in 2020. A few small things have changed, but the rolling chassis and engine package have remained the same — and we aren’t complaining. To this day we still adore the YZ250. It may not be the ultimate race bike that it once was, but it is a bike that was ahead of its time. It has good handling, great suspension and an easy-to-ride fun engine. It wasn’t until 2016 that a better 250 two-stroke was put into production, the KTM 250SX.

Not surprisingly, the naked 2005 Yamaha YZ250 made the cover of the November 2004 issue.

We have a dream, maybe a far-fetched one, but we can only hope that Yamaha will get back on the two-stroke band wagon like they once were. Imagine what they could do with the 20 years of technology they have so artfully avoided using since the 2005 YZ250 was introduced. With two-strokes gaining popularity by the day, an updated 2021 Yamaha YZ250 it would breathe even more life into the two-stroke explosion—and give KTM a run for their money.

95TH INTERNATIONAL SIX DAYS OF ENDURO CANCELED

Taylor Robert will have to wait another year to repeat his glory from the 2019 ISDT. Photo: Brandon Krause

After discussions between the FIM and the local organising committee of the 2020 FIM International Six Days of Enduro (ISDE) in relation to the ongoing Coronavirus disease pandemic, the USDE (previously known as the ISDT) has been moved to 2021—which sounds like a postponement, but is actually a cancellation of the 2020 ISDE. Since the 2020 ISDE was scheduled for late August and early September in Italy, which is the hardest hit by the coronavirus epidemic the oldest event in the FIM international calendar, the decision was made to hold the 95th edition of the FIM International Six Days of Enduro from August 30 to September 4, 2021.

YAMAHA AUSTRALIA DROPS ATVS FOR 2021 BECAUSE OF STRICTER GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS

2020 Yamaha Grizzly 700 utility ATVs won’t be sold in Australia or New Zealand after next year.

Due to new Australian government legislation that requires the mandatory fitment of so-called Operator Protective Devices (OPDs) Yamaha Australia will not sell utility ATVs after October 11, 2021. The protective devidce at the heart of the matter is a roll-over bar. Yamaha Australia’s Brad Ryan said, “The decision to make the fitment of OPDs compulsory is disappointing. The ruling has forced us to withdraw utility ATVs from the Australian market because as a manufacturer we are not willing to gamble with our customers lives by bolting untested devices onto our specifically engineered and designed ATVs.”

As the market leader in the ATV segment in Australia, Yamaha recognizes that utility ATVs are an important part of farm operations and will comply with stage one of the new consumer legislation. This includes testing and the fitment of warning labels by Oct 2020 (this moves ensures Yamaha ATVs remain available until October 2021). But after this date, Yamaha utility ATVs will be dropped. However, sport and youth models will continue to be available. Sport and youth ATVs do not need to be fitted with Operator Protective Devices. In addition, side-by-side vehicles (SSVs) are not affected by this ruling

MXA TEAM TESTED: TWIN AIR’S RADIATOR TRICKS

TWIN AIR RADIATOR SLEEVES
Twin Air radiator sleeves are used to keep mud and debris from blocking much-needed air to your bike’s radiators. Back in the golden oldie days, when two-strokes roamed the earth at will, savvy two-stroke riders would attach a section of wire mesh across the down tubes of their bikes to knock down mud before it could clog the fins of their air-cooled engines. The mud would stick to the wire mesh and then vibrate off. Twin Air obviously has some old moto soldiers in its design department, because that is exactly what Twin Air radiator sleeves do—except for radiators instead of cylinder fins. The Twin Air radiator sleeves are made from a nylon-coated, glass yarn designed to shed mud and dirt before it builds up. The retail price is $44.95. For more info go to www.twinair.com or call (800) 749-2890.

TWIN AIR ICE FLOW COOLANT
Twin Air’s high-performance, biodegradable, IceFlow coolant is a ready-to-use coolant formulated for long-lasting protection of all metals inside today’s motorcycle cooling systems, without harming the water pump seals. IceFlow coolant offers the added assurance of an extreme freezing point (-26ºC / -14.8ºF and is a Mono Propylene Glycol-based, silicate-free and formulated with demineralized water and cutting edge nanotech and organic additive technology. It is non-toxic and biodegradable. The retail price is $19.95 in in 2.2 liter (2. 32 quart) bottles.

TWIN AIR ICE FLOW HIGH-PRESSURE RADIATOR CAPS
Twin Air’s Ice Flow radiator cap increases the boiling point of the water in your bike’s radiator by increasing the amount of pressure inside the radiator. The difference between a stock radiator cap and a high-pressure one is dramatic. Without any pressure on it, water will boil at 212 degrees Fahrenheit (at standard temperature and barometric pressure); however, a cooling system that is under 15 pounds of pressure will allow straight water to reach 250 degrees before it boils. For every pound of pressure exerted on the coolant, the static boiling point is raised by 3 degrees. Twin Air offers 1.8 radiator caps to replace the stock 1.1 caps on Hondas, Yamahas, Kawasakis and Suzukis. For KTMs and Husqvarnas, which come stock with 1.8 caps, they have a 2.0 cap. The retail price iis $24.95.

For more information on Twin Air products go to (800) 749-2890 or www.twinair.com.

THE APRIL 2020 ISSUE IS JAM-PACKED FULL OF BIKE TEST & TECH ARTICLES

On the cover: How much can be in one issue of MXA?  We are going to give you a sampling of the April 2020 issue of MXA below.

The 2020 Husqvarna TC250 two-stroke still has a carb, which makes it a hot-rod for now—fuel-injection is coming though. This test tells you more about the TC250 that you’ll find anywhere else.

Jeff Stanton won six AMA Championships in a short four-year period. When he retired, he worked for Team Honda as their consultant for 10 years. He knows what he is talking about. Read what he says about Ken Roczen.

We show you how to get 60.83 horsepower out of a 2020 Yamaha YZ450F,  just by making changes to the YZ450F airbox. It only made 58.04 horses before our filter mods.

See this Penton 125 Six-Days. Cool looking, isn’t it? But the story of how John Penton got KTM to make it for him is equally cool.

We know a guy, who kept his old 2002 Honda CR250 two-stroke in his garage for 18 years. He said that he couldn’t sell it when four-strokes came on the scene and just forgot about it. Luckily, he remembered and built a great 2002 CR250 — albeit 18 years later.

If you’d like to get back to the fun days of pit bike riding, you need to take a look at the YCF Bigy 190MX. It may be made in China, but we didn’t break it and, if we had, all the parts are available in the USA.

When MXA went to China, Ryan Surratt (center) won the International class, while Dennis Stapleton (far right) finished fourth. It wasn’t as easy as that sounds — Dennis almost got arrested, the police stopped the race and the International class was only held after the Chinese spectators had left.

Back in 2008, the MXA wrecking crew threw a leg over James Stewart’s “Perfect Season” Kawasaki KX450F. Journey back in time with us to learn what Bubba’s bike actually felt like. In a word—Stiff.

MXA’s Trevor Nelson just happened to be in the right place during Jett Lawrence’s wrong time at Anaheim 2.

THE LATEST 2020 AMA NATIONAL SCHEDULE

Hangtown canceled their AMA National a month ago out of an abundance of caution over the coronavirus pandemic, but when the AMA schedule was restructured, Hangtown was not on the new 2020 AMA National  schedule—even though it seemed appropriate for the longest running AMA National to be given a new date.
