JEFFREY HERLINGS WINS HANS DE BEAUFORT CUP IN HOLLAND

Jeffrey Herlings. Photo: Ray Archer

Two-time 250 World Champion Jeffrey Herlings has won Holland’s most prestigious motorsport award—the Hans de Beaufort Cup. The award is named after Hans de Beaufort. Beaufort was shot by the Nazis in a Dijon prison in 1942. He had been forging credentials for downed Allied air crews in Holland so that they could enter Switzerland. He was an competitive motorcycle racer and used his skills to transport airmen. The top prize in Dutch motorcycle racing is the Hans de Beaufort Cup, which is awarded not only on racing skill ,but also character in the form of persistence and decency. Herlings has come a long way since his profanity laced tirades, foulmouthed TV interviews, angry internet posts and questionable riding of a few years ago.

CONTACT YOUR DEALER: KTM & HUSQVARNA SPOKE RECALL

KTM has issued a recall on the latest model year 2016 SX models in order to replace the front wheel spokes. During routine testing in ongoing production, KTM discovered that due to variations in the spoke manufacturing process, some spokes on the front wheels of 125SX, 150SX, 250SX, 250SXF, 350SXF and 450SXF models may exhibit quality deviations. Depending on where they are fitted in the wheel, care and spoke tension, it is possible that individual spokes may break while riding. This can overload the remaining intact spokes and may cause them to break.

New customers will be informed in writing and are asked to contact their local KTM or Husqvarna motocross dealer to arrange an appointment. Customers can check if their motorcycle is affected by checking online at www.ktm.com/us/service/safety for KTMs or www.husqvarna-motorcycles.com/service/service-and-safety-check for Husqvarnas (have your bike’s VIN number ready). The replacement of the front wheel spokes can only be carried out by authorized KTM motocross dealers. This work is carried out completely free of charge.

If your bike’s VIN number is not listed, you can ride the bike. If you have a spare front wheel from last year or before, put it on to ride. If you have aftermarket wheels (Tusk, FasterUSA, Dubya) you are okay. If there is a time delay in having the dealer address your front wheel problems, you can have the 2016 front wheel relaced with last year’s spokes or aftermarket spokes. MXA has six 2016 KTM’s and we have not had any front wheel issues.

HOW TO SUBSCRIBE TO MXA AND MAKE MONEY

If you had subscribed to MXA, the February 2016 issue would be on its way to your mailbox right now in the reliable hands of a uniformed agent of the U.S. Government. And you should want to subscribe so you could read all the details of the 2016 MXA 250 Shootout, peruse the test of the Service Honda CR500AF and find out what it’s like to a ride a 550cc KTM Factory Edition two-stroke. Or, you can wait for these tests to appear on the internet…in a couple months. Your choice.

Do you subscribe to MXA? You should. We know that you think that print magazines are dead and that the internet will fill the void, but most of the stuff in the current issue of MXA won’t appear on the web for several months, if at all. Luckily, you can get all of MXA on your iPhone, iPad, Kindle or Android by going to the Apple Store, Amazon or Google play, but better yet get the Digital desktop version at https://hi-torque.com/product/motocross-action-digital-edition/ for $9.99 a year. The MXA test riders prefer the print version and not just because it is delivered by a uniformed employee of the U.S. Government, but because for only $15.99 you get 12 issues and a free $25 Gift Card from Rocky Mountain ATV/MC. That means that there is a profit to be made in this deal for you. For the Print magazine go to: http://hi-torque.com/product/subscribe-to-motocross-action-magazine/

ASK THE MXPERTS: HELP! I CAN’T GET THE SHOCK OFF MY 2016 KTM 450SXF

The new generation of KTM motocross bikes are extremely popular, until it comes time to remove the pipe or shock.

Dear MXA,
I am the proud owner of a brand-new 2016 KM 450SXF. I love it, but when I tried to remove the exhaust pipe it wouldn’t come off. I wiggled it in every direction, but it always hit the shock reservoir. Using basic logic, I then tried to remove the shock. I wiggled it in every direction, but it refused to budge. I am stumped. I just put my stock pipe back on and now have a $1000 FMF ornament sitting in my garage. Help.

The standard MXA wrecking crew joke about the 2016 KTMs is that you can’t remove the exhaust pipe without removing the shock—and you can’t remove the shock without removing the exhaust pipe. That isn’t accurate, but it feels like it is. During test sessions with the KTM R&D department, the KTM guys would remove the swingarm every time we wanted to install different valving, a shorter shock or a lighter spring rate. They made it look seamless, but we told them that we would never remove the swingarm to change the rear shock. So, we started experimenting with an easier method and came up with the following 10 step solution.
