MEMORIES OF THE WAY WE WERE: 1952 CATALINA GRAND PRIX  PROGRAM

Catalina-Grand-Prix-1952If the Catalina Grand Prix was still in existence, it would be running this weekend. The proram above is from 64 years ago.

A MOMENT OF CATALINA GLORY

feetscatalinascramblerChuck “Feets” Minert won the Catalina Grand Prix 60 years ago. To commemorate the victory, BSA produced a Feets Minert Replica called the BSA “Catalina Scrambler.” It was based on Feets’ race bike. The MXA crew decided that 60 years was a long time to be apart, so we got a BSA Catalina Scrambler and the now 84-year-old Feets Minert to pose together for this photo.

FANTIC’S ALL-NEW OFFROAD LINE: WHAT’S A FANTIC?

fantic250neroNEWFantic Nero 250 enduro bike.

In 1969 two high-profile executives from Garelli Mopeds broke away to form their own motorcycle company in Barzago, Italy. They specialized in building small displacement offroad bikes—primarily the Fantic Caballero Cross 50. The Caballero Cross 50 was powered by a Minarelli P4 two-stroke and by today’s standards was more a hopped-up moped, but for young Italians it was their first motocross bike. They sold 10,000 units in the first year. After that they went on to build a successful line of Italian 50cc, 100cc, 125cc,  250cc and 300cc offroad motorcycles—and had great success in the World Trials Championship.

mecaboite-fantic-caballero-50-sm-casa-2016Fantic Caballero 50 entry-level street bike—still powered by Minarelli.

Fabtic is still in business, after reforming in Treviso, Italy in 2004. Fantic is now releasing a low-cost range of its enduro and street-legal bikes. They use chromoly perimeter frame, Yamaha Minarelli engines and come in 50cc and 125cc version for for $4000 and  $5400 respectively. Fantic also has a new full-size 250cc enduro bike being readied for the market. They are not imported into the United States.

CHAD REED SIGNS UP FOR BRITISH & ITALIAN GPS IN JUNE

ReedYamaha2016Chad will do a little moonlighting on the continent.

Before Australian Chad Reed moved to America and long before he became an American citizen, Skippy raced one year in the 250 World Championships, winning one GP (Lieprop) and finishing second in the 2001 250 World Championship… and immediately paced his bags and flew across the pond to America. Now he wants to go back — for two races anyway. He will race the British Grand Prix at Matterley Basin on June 19 and the Mantova, Italy, round on June 26 (the weekends of the Mt. Morris and Muddy Creek AMA Nationals). Chad said, “I have always valued my one and only year in Europe and I’m so excited to come back after all these years. I briefly mentioned it on social media and many British and European fans have shown lots of enthusiasm so that, in return, makes it a ton of fun for me. I haven’t really given any thought to the racing itself, I’m just excited to see old faces and new fans.”

Sue Fish—The Flying Fish.

Sue Fish won the 1976 and 1977 Women’s National Motocross Championship, but rather than be content with racing against the women Sue was one of the first women motocross racers to hold an AMA professional racing license and to compete regularly against men. Known by the nickname, “The Flying Fish,” she raced in the AMA 125cc National Motocross Championship. Fish’s talents extended beyond motocross— she competed in the 1978 Subaru International Motorcycle Olympiad (a two-day event encompassing all types of off-road racing). Fish also competed on asphalt, racing in the men’s Expert ranks in 600cc road racing. She went on to became a stuntwomen in Hollywood working on “Terminator” and “Footloose.” She also traveled as part of Evel Knievel’s stunt show in Australia. For her ground breaking efforts on behalf of women motorcycle racers, Sue was inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame in 2012.
