MXA WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: IT’S OVER AFTER ROUND 12, NOT ROUND ONE

THE 2017 GLEN HELEN TRIPLE STEP-UP

It’s lonely at Glen Helen on the Tuesday before a National. No flags. No banners. No fans. Just two riders and a bunch of Cats.

A couple weeks ago Glen Helen let the AMA Pros ride on their track on a Thursday, with no amateurs riding at the same time. It should be noted that what the Pros rode was the basic layout of the upcoming National track, with none of the obstacles built—just what was already there from the weekly wars. And that included the Triple Step-Up. This jump has been in the Glen Helen layout for over 15 years and has been jumped by every famous AMA National Champion in that time. It has been big. It has been small. It has had three separate steps. It has had two tabletops and a big step-up. It has had one massive leap over three steps. This year it has four steps; starting small and building up—with the fourth jump on the REM side of the hill.

This view show jumps 2 and 2 of the Triple Step-up. Jump one is to the left and jump 4 is over the rise.

On Tuesday of this week, the Glen Helen crew began finishing up the jumps, whoops, and overall character of the track—and as Glen helen always does, they had several Pro riders come out to test the Triple Step-Up. Glen Helen always tests the Triple Step-Up to avoid the embarassment of building something that no one can jump. Josh Grant has been the most commonly used test rider in the past, but this week he is dealing with blisters on his hands, so we had Axell Hodges and Dennis Stapleton do the test. They would not ride the whole track, just the Canyon, hip jump, Triple Step-Up and the step down. Then they would discuss what changes were needed and the track crew would make those changes and they would jump again. Within a few modification, it was deemed to be perfect—not just for famed jumper Axell Hodges, but also for Dennis Stapleton (who will be in the Two-Stroke Challenge). These are the only two riders to have ridden on the track—and they were not allowed to ride the whole track.

Once the riders jump up to the REM track, they have to come back down. Here, Axell Hodges floats back down to 40-foot long landing ramp.

You can see it is person on Saturday or watch it on TV, but TV does not do it any justice.

• FOR KETCHUP COX’S EYES ONLY! “ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL”

Famous moto-photog Ketchup Cox loves Texas swing bands. Stranded in SoCal all these year since Jody brought him away from his Texas roots back in 1976, Ketchup yearns for anything that reminds him of home. So, it is with great pleasure, that we want Ketchup to know that one of his favorite bands, “Asleep at the Wheel” will be playing in Glendora, California, on June 3 at the Haugh Performing Arts Center (www.haughpac.com).

15 RYNO POWER ATHLETES INSIDE THE TOP 20 AT HANGTOWN

Adam Cianciarulo went 2-8 for fourth at Hangtown.

Press release: The first round of the Outdoors has finally arrived and proved to be an exciting weekend. Motocross is continually named one of the most physically demanding sports in the world. To no surprise, Ryno Power helps a handful of the series’ fastest riders and many rising stars in the sport. This past weekend marked the start of the 2017 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship at Hangtown MX in Northern California. With the 250 and 450 titles up for grabs, it’ll be interesting to see who sets themselves apart from the rest of the group.

Aaron Plessinger was thir din the 250 class at Hangtown.

Austin Forkner had an eventful afternoon. A small mechanical issue caused Forkner to fall to 11th in the first moto. However, a strong ride in the second moto landed him second place and would push Forkner to a 5th overall on the day. Consistency was key for Aaron Plessinger at the first round of Nationals. Training with Gareth Swanepoel has kept him in top shape and near the top of pack in 250s. Plessinger spent the first moto in the lead group and finished in 3rd place. He posted a fifth in the second moto, Plessinger would take third overall for the day. After a successful and complete Supercross season, Adam Cianciarulo is carrying his momentum to the Nationals. After grabbing the holeshot in the first moto, Cianciarulo would lose the lead to Osborne, but hang on for a second place finish. A less fortunate second moto would place Cianciarulo at 8th to give him a fourth overall for Round 1. After missing much of the Supercross season with various injuries, Colt Nichols has returned to full health just in time for the Outdoors. Training with Gareth Swanepoel has played an important role in Nichols’ quick recovery and consistent results on the track. Nichols posted some of the best scores of the 250 class for the day, resulting in sixth overall at Hangtown after going 5-6.

Cooper Webb went 5-9 at Hangtown.

A wrist injury kept Broc Tickle on the sidelines for the final rounds of the Supercross season, however, he was able to recover in time for the opening rounds of Nationals. Despite limited time on the bike prior to Round 1, Tickle stayed near the front of the pack in both 450 motos. Tickle was able to finish fifth overall with 7-7 results at Hangtown. Training with Gareth Swanepoel has kept Cooper Webb’s results amongst the top in his class. Last year, Webb won the 250 Title after a dominating season. This year marks Webb’s first season in the 450 class. Webb kicked off the season with a 5-9 finish in Motos 1 and 2 for a respectable seventh overall. Weston Peick made his return to the track after missing most of the Supercross series due to a wrist injury sustained at the Phoenix round of the Supercross season. Peick finished his day on 12-11 scores to claim an 11th overall. Christian Craig has moved up to the 450 class for the 2017 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship season as a fill-in rider for Ken Roczen. Craig led the field in the first moto, claimed 9-14 moto scores, and finished 12th overall in the premier division.
