ASK THE MXPERTS: WHO INVENTED THE HOLESHOT DEVICE?

Dear MXA,
I saw a conversation on the web about holeshot devices and they had everyone from Alexander Graham Bell to Chad Reed inventing the holeshot device. Who really invented it?

YAMAHA’S PROTOTYPE 01GEN THREE-WHEEL LEANER

Yamaha-01GEN-Concept-03Yamaha’s concept 01GEN has two wheels up front and a belt-driven, single, rear wheel. Yamaha calls it an “On & Off Crossover,” because it can been ridden on both pavement and dirt.

YAMAHA01gen_It is a leaner, in that each front wheel leans into the corners, supported by its own fork and covered by its weird, lobster-like, dual front fenders. Yamaha’s design department is big on three-wheel leaners, as proven by last year’s Tricity scooter.

UP NEXT! THE FIM SUPERCROSS DES NATIONS

SXDESN

Now that the World Team Motocross Championships are over, with France, Belgium and the USA on the podium, the next logical race on the schedule should be the World Team Supercross Championships. The obvious choice of locations would be Anaheim Stadium—since it already holds three Supercross events and a fourth one could easily be slotted into the schedule.

The format would consist of three-man teams from each country, plus wild cards that are seeded in based on qualifying heats. Obviously, most countries would just send their 2014 MXDN teams, although Germany and France would probably substitute Ken Roczen for one spot, while France has the luxury of reconfiguring their team with the addition of Musquin, Pourcel and Tixier as potential riders.

The Supercross des Nations could be the biggest event in the history of Supercross. The favorites will be the USA, France, Germany, Australia and England. Stay tuned for the date and what countries decide not to send a team. Just kidding Italy and Belgium.

JORDI TIXIER SIGNS WITH KAWASAKI FOR 2015

Not a secret — just the official announcement that Jordi Tixier will be at Kawasaki next year. Although Jordi Tixier is the new FIM 250 World Champion, he was fired by the KTM team he won the title for in the middle of the 2014 season. Tixier had a rough start to the 2014 season. He finished 8th in Qatar, 7th in Thailand, 11th in Brazil and 6th in Italy, before finally making the podium at round five in Bulgaria. At that point, KTM told him that his services wouldn’t be needed in 2015. From that point on Jordi scored podium finishes in 13 of the next 24 motos—and won the 2014 250 World Championship by 4 points over KTM teammate Jeffrey Herlings (who valiantly tried to hang on to it by riding with a barely healed femur in Mexico). Jordi signed with Kawasaki while all of this was going on.

“I’m very happy to have signed with the Monster Energy Kawasaki MX2 Racing Team; they approached me during the season and I saw how motivated they were to sign me. It will give me further motivation to defend my World title on a new bike; I know that everyone in the team is motivated and so am I. The team have the support of the Kawasaki factory in Japan; we spoke a lot with the technical staff and I know that they are able to provide us with the best material for every situation.”

USED IT, ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: GAERNE SG12 BOOTS

SG121e

The popular Gaerne SG12 has been updated with a reshaped toebox, more durable wear patches on the top and sides and a record breaking price tag. Thanks to its incredible durability and reputation for long lasting performances, the SG12 may be able to justify its high price.

SG12BOOT2014

VERDICT: This is not a cheap boot, but is is a high-quality boot. The interior is plush and inviting. The panels that contact the frame offer exceptional grip and the rubber prevents four-stroke pipes from cooking our legs. Some testers complained about the heel being tall, but this wasn’t a consensus. $619.99  — www.gaerne.com or (800) 426-0213.

DREAM JOBS: MARK SHEAR —  RIDER SUPPORT AT O’NEAL MOTOCROSS

MARKSHEAR2

STARTING POINT: I started off racing every weekend with guys at O’Neal. Motocross has always been my passion, and I have heard the saying many times, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” So, I decided to do just that. I started working at O’Neal in dealer sales and was in that position for over six years before moving to rider support.

THE JOB: While working in sales, I completed college and got my degree. When the rider support position at O’Neal became available, it was a natural transition. This was the ideal position, as I could combine my passion for racing along with my knowledge of the industry and the products we produced. It was a great fit. I am ultimately responsible for all professional riders’ gear needs. Plus, I scout future riders as well as review resumes and process orders.
