WEIRD STUFF THAT YOU MUST HAVE MISSED WHILE LOOKING AT YOUR PHONE

maico50034 maico500You may have heard of the Maico 501, but don’t confuse it with the Maico 500. Yes, it was an air-cooled two-stroke, but the engine wasn’t made by Maico, but by airplane manufacturer Heinkel. If you had been in the market for a car back in the day, would you have bought a Maico? Maico marketed there line of small cars from 1956 to 1958 (which they inherited when they bought the defunct Champion car company). The Maico 500 was powered by a 452cc, twin-cylinder, 18-horsepower, water-cooled, two-stroke Heinkel engine. The two-door car could hold four people, but it was by no means roomy. Warranty issues doomed the car and production was stopped in 1958. Maico went out of the automobile business in 1958, but continued to manufacture motorcycles through 1986.

1937bsascout

1937 BSA SCOUT
BSA actually starting making cars in 1907, but stopped and started several times (1914, 1921 and 1932). The last BSA car was produced in 1940. Their best known car was the BSA Scout. The Scouts came as two-seat sports cars, four-seat tourers and two-seat coupes. It was a front-wheel drive car, manufactured and sold by a subsidiary of the Birmingham Small Arms Company. It was launched in 1935 with a three-speed tranny, four-cylinder layout, 1075cc engine (out of the previous BSA three-wheeled car). It had a rakish looking body with cut-away doors, luggage space in the tonneau, motorcycle-style fenders and a single-piece windshield.

BLATA 125 FOUR-STROKE
Pavel Blata got his start in the motorcycle business by helping design pocket bikes (miniature motorcycles for adults) for another company (Vittorazi), but soon decided to go out on his own. He built a factory in the Czech Republic and by 1994 had hit pay dirt with a Polini-powered pocket bike called the Blata Elite 11. Blata won the European Pocket Bike Championships in 2000. Unfortunately, just as with his Japanese counterparts, inexpensive Chinese knockoffs put a big dent in Blata’s 50cc pocket bike business.

Thus, Blata had to expanded to full-size bike. The first was his air-cooled, 125cc, offroad bike with Marzocchi forks, Sachs shock and AJP disc brake. The Blata looks like it could do the job as a trail bike. It produces 15 horsepower, has an electric starter, Walbro carburetor and five-speed transmission.

ILMOR ENGINEERING FIVE-STROKE CONCEPT
Race car engine designer Ilmore produced a Five-Stroke engine that htye claim achieved an impressive fuel consumption figure of 226g/kWh. Ilmor Engineering’s new engine, which could be suitable for installation for either hybrid or conventional installation, utilizes two fired cylinders operating on a conventional four-stroke cycle, which alternately exhaust into a central expansion cylinder, whereupon the burnt gases perform further work. The additional low pressure expansion cylinder decouples the expansion and compression processes, and enables the optimum expansion ratio to be selected independently of the compression ratio.

The engine uses two overhead camshafts, one is high pressure, the other low pressure. The high pressure camshaft turns at half the crank speed while the low pressure crankshaft rotates at the same speed as the crank. The high pressure cam works with the outer two cylinders, in the same way a standard four-stroke engine would, but the low pressure camshaft works with the central larger cylinder gathering exhaust flow from the outer cylinders. The engine is designed to be far more fuel efficient than a traditional four-stroke four-cylinder counterpart.

500 HORSEPOWER WAZUMA QUAD
The two-wheeler wrought the three-wheeler, which in turn transformed into the four-wheel quad. French custom builder Lazareth took the quad to the extreme with the Lazareth Wazuma. Powered by a 500-horsepower BMW V12 engine (that can run on bio-ethanol), the $284,000 Wazuma is a little out of most people price range. Why would anyone build a quad like this? Amazingly enough, quads can be made street legal in many European countries. For more info go to www.lazareth.fr.

USED IT, ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: FUNNELWEB PYRAMID AIR FILTER

productsfunneleweb

MSR’s FunnelWeb air filter is made in Australia and is known for its pyramid-like bumps, dome shape and single layer of single-density polyurethane foam. The funny shape has a purpose, as it increases the outer surface area to almost double that of a conventional air filter.

The one-piece, pyramid design provides a larger surface area than most filters. Increased surface area allows less dirt to penetrate the foam. It is easy to get confused about the relationship between filter size and airflow. While the FunnelWeb has twice as much surface area on its outer diameter, thanks to the 203 pyramids on the 2016 KTM filter, it is not any larger where the air filter cage mates to the intake tract. No matter how large the outer surface area, the air still must go through the same size intake tract. But all is not lost. The greater surface area of the FunnelWeb means that the chance of airflow being impeded as the filter gets clogged with dirt is reduced. There are more places for the air to get in, and this translates into longer service intervals.

To get the best seal possible between the air filter and the airbox lip, FunnelWeb injection-molds a urethane seal for a tighter fit to support a layer of dense foam seal between the cage and the airbox. MXA still puts grease on the seal for extra security.

funnelweb

In MXA’s tests, the FunnelWeb air filter did its job well. We tested it in extreme dust and sand at the back of the pack. There were no signs of dirt bypassing the oiled foam. The larger surface area was a plus on the maintenance side of things, but if there was a performance gain over the stock air filter, our test riders didn’t notice it. Since all filters are made of foam, designers can only change density, layers and shape. FunnelWeb’s choices result in a filter that is durable and long-lasting.

WHEN TO JUMP THE RED LIGHTS AND WHEN NOT TO—AMA INSTRUCTIONS BY IKEA

amaruleoftheweek

amarulesREDCROSSFLAGS1 amarules RECROSSflags2This a safety rule and is constantly being tweaked to protect fallen riders and the men who go to their aid. It has been controversial in the past because its enforcement has been inconsistent at best—evidenced by the Ryan Dungey penalty last year that cost him a victory (which was reviewed after the race was over on video — a video which showed other riders committing the same violation and not being punished). The newly revised rule (all the bold type represents 2017 rule changes) sets up the penalties for racing through the Red Cross Flag area. If you do it in practice, you lose your fastest lap. If you do it in a heat, semi or Last Chance you are penalizes two positions (at the least). If you do it in the main event you are not penalized any positions as far as the fans in the stands are concerned, but when the results are officially posted, you are penalized by getting your points and purse deducted two places (and two additional AMA points).

The main event rule is a little confusing. Look at it this way, if a rider finishes third, but violated the Red Cross flag, he will be paid the purse money for fifth (a two position penalty) and get the AMA points of the fifth place guy (plus a 2 additional point penalty). And, after the fact, he will be moved in the official results from third to fifth. The only other things of import are that the Race Director can waive the penalties, by issuing a warning or fine, and Red Cross Flag violations on the sighting lap or cool-down portion (after the checkered flag) are subject to a fine only..

USED IT, ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: LEATT AIRFLEX ARMOURGEL ELBOW GUARDS

airflex-pro-elbow-guard-4

Leatt’s new Airflex Armourgel elbow guards are slip-on sleeve-like guards that don’t need Velcro straps to stay in place. And instead of plastic padding, the Armourgel elbow guard uses a molded padding made from an energy-absorbing material known as Armourgel padding.

According to Leatt, Armourgel is a “non-Newtonian gel.” What does that mean? “Non-Newtonian” refers to the fact that the Armourgel pads have a coefficient of viscosity that is not consistent. What does that mean? Armourgel pads are soft to the touch but become firmer on impact. In other words, if your elbow struck the ground, the pads would get firmer to resist the blow.

Every motocross racer has lived with a scabby elbow that won’t heal or a serious arm injury that needs protection from further damage. Most elbow guards strap on to your arm with Velcro straps. To keep them in place, the Velcro has to be tightened down. This is uncomfortable and not all that secure in a crash. Most MXA test riders prefer sleeve-style elbow guards. By wedding the Armourgel padding to a Lycra sleeve, the Airflex elbow guards pull on like arm warmers that Tour de France racers wear in the Alps. There are no pressure points, because there are no Velcro straps. The Armourgel pads are perforated to keep your arm cool, but that is a pipe dream. Leatt’s Airflex elbow guards are CE tested and certified for impact protection.

For motocross, the Armourgel Airflex elbow guards are almost perfect. MXA test riders, even those who don’t normally wear elbow guards, said that they never gave them a thought during a race. If you gave up on old-school elbow guards, you should try Leatt’s sleeve-style guards. Racers with elbows that are perpetually hamburgered will find Airflex elbow guards to be a great way to protect an injured elbow or forearm. And, if you haven’t road-rashed your elbow yet, the Airflex guard could keep it from happening in the future.
