MXA’S WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: BY RACE 5 WE’LL KNOW WHAT’S GONNA HAPPEN

• BREAKING NEWS! SETH HAMMAKER TO MISS THE OPENING ROUND OF THE 250 EAST WITH A WRIST INJURY

The Pro Circuit Kawasaki team has suffered another loss of  one of their star riders. Seth Hammaker will miss Houston on February 4.

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider Seth Hammaker will miss the opening round of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross 250 East series Championship in Houston, Texas, on February 4th following a wrist injury sustained in a crash while practicing. Hammaker was on form to contend for the 250 East title when a crash during a routine practice session resulted in an injury to his wrist. Hammaker consulted medical professionals and it was determined that the injury will force him to miss the opening rounds of the 2023 250 EastChampionship.

Hammaker, the 2021 Monster Energy Supercross ‘Rookie Of The Year’ award winner, claimed two consecutive podium finishes at the start of the 2022 250 West Championship and secured eight top-10 overall finishes in the AMA Pro Motocross season. The Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider carried that momentum into what had been a productive off-season of preparation prior to this set back which will delay him from his goal to once again challenge for race wins.

Seth Hammaker 2022 Washougal National-9282

Seth Hammaker said, “It’s of course frustrating to have an injury right before the start of the season. My training has been going really well recently and I feel that my speed and fitness were up to the level needed to race for wins. This injury will set me back a bit, but my full focus is on mending the injury and getting back out there on the track to compete at the highest level.”

• THE THINNING OF THE HERD IN THE 250 WEST

This crash on the way to the first turn in the San Diego Supercross 250 West class damaged the hopes several riders who were looking for a good finish. The first rider down was Levi Kitchen (43). Meanwhile, Wilson Todd (102) and Mitchel Harrison (84) are about to start a chain reaction. Photo: Mark Riker

Levi flew through the air just as Wilson Todd (102) to hit the rear wheel of Mitchell Harrison (84). Pretty soon all three of them (Kitchen, Harrison and Todd) are hitting the ground. Photo: Mark Riker

Mitchell Harrison (84) is catapaulted forward, while Wilson Todd’s bike keeps him company. Meanwhile, Levi Kitchen is caught up in Harrison’s number 84 bike. Photo: Mark Riker

Harrison and Todd are still tumbling forwards. As for Levi Kitchen, that is his leg sticking straight up in the air behind Harrison’s number 84. Of all the riders who swerved to avoid the melee, only Stilez Robertson (40) and Derek Kelly (41) managed to make it into the top ten. Dylan Walsh (79) was 11th. Hunter Yoder (508) had to come to a complete stop, but got back up to 14th.

BIKES YOU NEVER SEEN BEFORE: 1980 FRENCH-BUILT BARIGO YB500

The French-built Barigo YB500 used a Yamaha XT500 four-stroke engine, but could be ordered to accept a Honda XL500 single also.

Barigo founder Patrick Barigault was asked by a friend to build a frame for his Bultaco in the early 1970s. People were impressed by the Barigault frame and he got an order from a distributor to build frames for Honda 350 engines. These bikes were marketed as the ITM 350. In 1976, Barigault made his first Barigo motorcycles. These were rolling chassis kits that used Honda XL and Yamaha XT four-stroke engines. If they used a Honda engine they were called HB 500s (HB stood for Honda/Barigo) and the Yamaha-powered bike were called YB500s (YB stood for Yamaha/Barigo). In 1983 Barigo’s switched to Rotax engines. Barigo stayed in business until the early 1990s making Supermoto and Rally bikes (and was the only French-made motorcycle of the time).

• MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: MOOSE YAMAHA PW50 HANDLEBAR KIT

Moose Yamaha PW50 handlebar kit.

Moose Racing introduces its new Yamaha PW50 handlebar kit. With the high demand of the bike that started it all, Moose brings you the upgrade you need with the Moose Racing PW50 handlebar kit. It lets you replace the OEM non-adjustable handlebars with a four-post clamp system that allows you to adjust handlebar position and includes a brake mount so you can swap your OEM lever to the handlebars.

The four-post handlebar clamps and brake mount  for the handlebars.

To reduce arm fatigue, the bars are designed to fit smaller children’s hands with a smaller diameter bar than the normal adult-size handlebar. This upgrade is a must for any young rider! It retails for $114.95. See your local dealer or go to www.mooseracing.com to check these out!

ANSWER: Danny is on the infamous 1981 water-cooled Yamaha YZ125—best remembered for having the radiator mounted on the triple clamps. Banzai Hill was  at Saddleback Park. It was only used at big races? The rider crashing is Arizona’s Chappy Blose. Chappy Blose is the uncle of current AMA racer Chris Blose, who’s father Bobby Blose was also an AMA Pro i, the 1980s.
