MARVIN MUSQUIN SIGNS A SUPERCROSS-ONLY DEAL WITH TEAM KTM FOR 2022

KTM has announce that Marvin Musquin has locked in a deal to remain with the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team through the 2022 AMA Supercross Championship. It will be his 12th season with the U.S. Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team in 2022, thanks in part to his loyalty to the team his success at the last two rounds of the 2021 AMA Supercross Championship. At 31 years old, Marvin is no where near to being the oldest rider on the AMA circuit.

Marvin said,“I’m really happy to extend my contract for another year making 12 years racing in the U.S. and 14 years in total with the with the Red Bull KTM family! It’s no secret that everyone on the team is like family to me. It will be another fun challenge working with the new bike.”

KTM director of American Motorsports Roger DeCoster said, “Marvin will be back for another Supercross season and I think he wants to prove to us that he is like fine wine and gets better with time. After serious knee surgery two years ago, Marvin worked hard to recover and he is back in top shape, so we feel that after finishing strong in this year Supercross with a win and second in the last two races, he will be back capable to perform at a top level.”

THIS WEEK IN MXA: WHAT MADE DYLAN FERRANDIS THE BEST RIDER OF 2021? PLUS LOTS OF FUN STUFF

FIRST LOOK! 2022 KTM 450SMR SUPERMOTO RACER

All disciples require special machinery, and Supermoto is no different. The 2022 KTM 450SMR is as specialized as possible.

The latest 2022 race bike to come out of te KTM factory is the 2022 KTM 450SMR. The new 450SMR sets the benchmark for handling and power. The championship-winning engine, adapted from KTM’s motocross and Supercross machines, has been adjusted and modified for optimum Supermoto use. The 59.5 pound engine fully exploits the Pankl five-speed gearbox that is guided by an ECU sensor that permits specific engine maps for each gear. The robotic laser-welded chromoly frame offers the perfect melding of torsion and flex characteristics. The Supermoto-specific 16mm offset triple clamps bring an attack-ready geometry to the chassis.

Asphalt racing requires lots of rubber on the ground.

The Brembo four-piston radial caliper and 310mm floating rotor and design to put a stop to any over eagerness on the rider’s part.

Bridgestone’s 16.5-inch, 125/600R, radial Battlax Supermoto front tire.

Supermoto is all about living on the limits of traction and the 2022 KTM 450SMR runs on 16.5-inch and 17-inch Alpina spoked wheels with tubeless Bridgestone slick tires. Braking is achieved by a premium Brembo four-piston radial caliper and master cylinder setup with 310mm front rotor and 220mm disc on the rear. Availability will start in October, so contact your local KTM dealer to get on the list.

JON ORTNER TAKES A WALKABOUT AT THE PALA NATIONAL?

Jon Ortner and his camera caught up to the man of hour, Dylan Ferrandis, in the Yamaha pits. Dylan moved to America when he aged out of the 250 World Championships. It was the smartest thing he could have done because he has been very successful, both in terms of Championships and money earned. Going into the 2022 season, Dylan is the man to beat—especially by his soon-to-be Star Yamaha teamate Eli Tomac, who won the Pala 450 Nationals.

Everyone expected Jett Lawrence (18) to be the dominant 250 National rider and he started out gangbusters, but faltered mid-season and handed the points lead over to Justin Cooper, who faltered late in the season to hand the points lead back to Lawrence. Heading to the final race at Hangtown on Saturday, Jett has a substantial points lead over Cooper. Jon Ortner caught a snap of Jett looking like he’s tangled up in wires and construction equipment at Pala.

The Dunlop tire pit is a busy place as riders try to guess which tire will work best. It’s obvious that these two riders have completely different ideas of what Pala’s dirt was going to be like.

Justin Jones, son of four-time 250 National Champion Gary Jones, decided to take a break from college and his offroad career to race the Pala 450 National. Justin is a four-time Baja 1000 winner, multi-time ISDE Gold Medallist and member of the ISDT winning Junior Trophy team, but just wanted to see how the other side lived.

John Tomac, father or Eli Tomac, Asterisk knee brace’s Mike Beier and Gary Jones, father of Justin Jones, hang out in the pits.

Former MXA test rider and Pro Circuit mechanic Bill Keefe and Husqvarna/KTM/GasGas Media manager Andy Jefferson relived old stories about Mitch Payton’s younger days.

MXA’s Dennis Stapleton (284) decided at 40 years of age to race the 450 National class to help him get ready for his big goal, winning the Over-40 World Vet Motocross Championship at Glen Helen in November. Dennis qualified for the 40-man field—which was a success in his book. Dennis raced his first AMA National 21 years ago for the Fast By Ferracci Husqvarna team.

The Noren clan waiting for daddy to come back from timed qualifying.

It may be glamorous up at the front of the pits where the factory semis are parked, but it is a different story back in the privateer pits at Pala.

Twisted Developments Jamie Ellis looks like he might be listening to his play list from Pandora before the serious race chatter starts coming through his headset.

Jerry Robin (77) was hurt at Pala National #1  back in May and ended up taking a trip to the Alpinestars Medical Unit at Pala #2. You gotta believe he wants Pala off the 2022 schedule.

Number 117 is Nick Nisbet from San Luis Obispo, California. He is a real estate agent and his mechanic, Jon Anderson, is a construction worker. They came to Pala for their first-ever AMA National and, from the looks of it, they brought half the population of San Luis Obispo with them. Nick was 39th fastest in Timed Qualifying. You would think that being in the “Fast 40” would get him a spot in the 450 mains—not so. They only take the top 36 times and everyone else has to go to the Last Chance. Nick missed qualifying out of the Las Chance by three spots, but told Jon Ortner, “It’s just about having fun and giving it a shot to get into the main races. We definitely had the most fun in the pits.”

“Did you tighten this bolt, because I tightened it earlier. Who else tightened it? Everyone of you! Don’t tightened anything ever again!”

Jon Ortner caught up with MXA’s Trevor Nelson out on the track, but Trevor was busy using his 300mm lens to check if he left the headlights on in his truck in the parking lot.

Chris Cole is a local Glen Helen racer, who owns a successful heavy equipment business, but during the racing season he drops everything to go on the circuit to help Fredrik Noren.

Brian Martin (left) and Gary Jones (right) avoided the horrible traffic on the two-lane blacktop road to Pala by parking far away and mountain biking into the track.

Dominic Desimone (565) struggled with the ruts and mud in timed qualifying, but made the 40-man field—finishing 26-24.

TEAM USA OUT OF 2021 MOTOCROSS DES NATIONS, BUT THE WORLD MARCHES ON

When the European Union recommended to its 27 member countries that they should reinstate travel restrictions on Americans travelers, citing soaring coronavirus infections rates in the United States as the reason, Team USA reevaluated their travel plans to the MXDN. Adding to the situation, Justin Barcia suffered a bad concussion and has not raced for several weeks and Chase Sexton suffered a medical issue with his spleen that forced him to sit out the Pala National. It was determined to wait until next year.

THE CURRENT LIST OF 2021 MOTOCROSS DES NATIONS TEAMS

The winning 2011 Motocross des Nations team of Blake Baggett, Ryan Dungey and Ryan Villopoto.

Below is a list of the confirmed teams, but no Team USA or Team Australia. Pandemics, travel restrictions, breakouts and lockdowns not withstanding, the Motocross des Nations is only two weeks away. Because the GP series has nine GPs to race on their schedule after the September 26th MXDN, many MXGP stars elected not to race the MXDN so they could focus on winning the World Championship instead. The MXGP schedule stretches into December (this is assuming that they still intend to do the three fly-away races in Argentina and Indonesia, but there is a chance that these races will be canceled and double-headers at more convenient European tracks will replace them). MXA TEAM TESTED: FMF POWERBOMB GOGGLES

FMF is one of the biggest names in the motocross industry and is always thinking of new ways to expand its brand beyond exhaust systems. At the beginning of 2021, FMF teamed up with 100% Goggles to come up with its very own goggle line called FMF Vision.

It is no secret that the FMF goggle is actually a 100% goggle with FMF flavor. Every FMF goggle has an embossed 100% logo on it. FMF Vision is a collaborative venture between these two powerhouse brands. The goggle design is owned by 100%. If you are asking which 100% goggle design it is, you would have to go back a few years. The FMF PowerBomb goggles look exactly like the 100%’s Accuri design, which they don’t offer anymore (although there is an Accuri 2). MXA tested the Accuri goggles a few years back and, looking at our old notes, test riders loved it and had no complaints.

The FMF PowerBomb goggles offer a unique frame shape with a raised section at the top of the lens to give a bit more forward vision when ducking your head. It is a minor improvement on the vision front, but from a design aesthetic, it coordinates perfectly with the squared-off nose bridge. The frame has ample flex, which helps it fit snugly against a wide variety of facial shapes. If you want more flex, you can remove the nose piece. It is comfortable and fits in all of MXA’s popular helmets without interference.

The goggle strap is 45mm wide and has good resilience. The strap didn’t stretch out, ripple or fray over time. To keep the goggle in place on your helmet, a 10mm silicone strip is laid in the middle of the entire goggle strap. The triple-layer, moisture-managing face foam is 15mm thick and feels very supple on the face. The material was not only comfortable, it fit securely around many different face shapes so debris couldn’t get into the goggle. A good fit around the face is also important for sweat. If there isn’t enough pressure on the face, or if there is a gap between a rider’s face and the foam, the odds are very high that sweat droplets will get into the rider’s eyes.

The FMF PowerBomb goggles comes with a clear lens for $42.50. For $52.50, you get two lenses—a mirror or smoke polycarbonate, anti-fog lens on the goggle and an extra clear lens in the box. FMF sells a variety of tear-off options. You can get two stacks of its laminated tear-offs (seven per stack) for $13.00. If you want regular tear-offs, FMF offers a 20-pack ($14.00) or 50-pack ($30.00). FMF also has you covered for rainy days and mud races with a roll-off system for $40.00.

DIGITS? $42.50 (clear lens), $52.50 (mirror or smoke lens)— www.fmfracing.com or your local dealer.

MXA RATING: The PowerBomb goggle was light enough, simple enough and comfortable enough that test riders forgot they even had it on. This is a simple goggle that offers good comfort, a nice fit and absorbs sweat on hot days. This is a straightforward goggle with an iconic motocross nameplate. It offers high performance and is a collaboration between two hardcore motocross companies.

• GLEN HELEN NITRO RALLYCROSS TICKETS ON SALE NOW FOR NOV. 20-21 EVENT

Travis Pastrana’s Nitro RallyCross (NRC) is set to expand in a big way, announcing a full championship series comprising five races in 2021. In 2022, NRX will go even bigger with a 10-stop global championship with races in North America, Europe and the Middle East. The new championship will also feature a revolutionary electric vehicle supercar class, which will be introduced in 2022. Travis Pastrana said, “Since day one, I have truly believed that Nitro RallyCross has the potential to be the most exciting motorsports series on the planet. When we built the first NRX course in Utah we knew we had something special — from the drivers’ genuine smiles to the astonished fans as cars flew side-by-side over 100-foot jumps.” Nitro RallyCross comes to Glen Helen Raceway on Nov. 20-21.  You can purchase tickets now by Clicking Here.
