MXA’S WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: DON’T ASK FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS…

WHO IS OUTSIDE THE TOP TEN LOOKING IN?

Replacing Ryan Dungey at Team KTM is a double-edged sword for Broc Tickle. First, he got the dream bike on the dream team. Second, he got all the pressure of replacing the legend Ryan Dungey. Tickle is 11th in points, 4 points behind Cooper Webb and 1 point ahead of Eli Tomac. He needs to pick up the pieces.

The pre-season favorite to win the whole shooting match, Eli Tomac, is in 12th place (and is two full races behind Jason Anderson). Eli can easily move into the top ten, and maybe as high a 8th, with a good race in San Diego

Chad Reed is 14th in points, but started the season with a barely healed ankle and a new motorcycle. Chad just needs a good start to begin turning his season around. Everybody knows he’s capable to amazing comebacks—he just needs to get the spark reignited.

It didn’t help Malcolm Stewart to miss the first race of the season, but even if he had been at A1 and matched his best result so far, he’d only be in 13th place instead of 16th. JGR hired Malcolm as a fill-in rider after Justin Bogle got hurt, but luckily for Malcolm, now that Bogle is back, JGR has kept him on the team.

Dean Wilson crashed at Anaheim 1 and injured his shoulder. Dean missed round two in Houston and then came back at round three and rode in pain. He has been steadily improving week by week and just missed a top ten finish in Oakland by one spot last Saturday. Dean is 90 points behind the 450 points leader and in 18th place. He’s riding for pride from here on out.

CURRENT 450 SUPERCROSS POINTS STANDINGS HEADING TO SAN DIEGO

Cole Seely had his best chance to win this season in Oakland, but he fell while leading. He ended up in 6th in Oakland, but is still 4th in points.

REM GLEN HELEN MOTOCROSS ON FEBRUARY 10, 17 & 24

REM will be at Glen Helen every Saturday in February. That is former CMC Number One and brand-new REM Number One Val Tamietti in this week’s race poster.  For info go to www.remsatmx.com

AMA RULE OF THE WEEK: WHY WASTE TIME? JUST HAVE A SINGLE AMA 250 SUPERCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

Under the new AMA “pointing out” rules, a rider can stay in the regional Supercross series until he earns the maximum points threshold four times  (that threshold is currently 135 points). Prior to 2018, it was set at three years. Additionally, the rule that stated that a rider who won the 250 East/West Supercross series twice had to move out of the class has been changed for 2018. Now a rider who wins the East/West twice can stay for a maximum of three years (a year is defined as 5 points in a year).

In any rational world, the AMA would institute a single AMA 250 Supercross Champion and forget about making anyone point out. Face it, they pay the 250 East/West riders a pittance and the bonuses are much less than in the 450 class because of the regional definition of the series. A 250 rider who finishes outside of the top ten in the 250 East/West main event, earns less money than a 450 rider who finishes dead last in the 450 Last Chance ($1000).

This season there will be two combined East/West races (Indy and Vegas)—which will showcase every good 250 rider in the country instead of half of them. Two races is a start, now let’s make it a true Championship by making it a single Championship. It could still be 9 races and the remaining eight races could be a 125 Two-Stroke Supercross Championship (most likely with the same riders).

2018 SUPERCROSS WINNERS AT A GLANCE AFTER 5 RACES

Eli Tomac (3) still isn’t out of the 2018 AMA Supercross Championship, but for Eli it’s either win big or lose big. He was dead last at Anaheim 1, missed Houston, won Anaheim II, won Houston and finished 13th in Oakland.

MXA PHOTO OF THE WEEK: AIR, GROUND, AIR, GROUND, CRF450!

Joe Sutter and his CRF450 cartwheeled down Glen Helen’s Mt. Whitney on Saturday.

The scary thing about this crash photo is that it was snapped only midway through the crash, Joe Sutter (111) and his CRF450 would keep on tumbling — and every time they tumbled, the CRF450 would land on top of Joe (who had clipped the fallen rider at the top when over coming over REM’s Mt. Whitney downhill). Amazingly, he walked away.

MTA WORLD TWO-STROKE CHAMPIONSHIP COMING ON MARCH 31

Just in case you need a little extra time to get your trusty, but rusty, two-stroke ready to race, you better get on the stick. The World Two-Stroke Championship will be held at Glen Helen Raceway on Saturday, March 31, 2018. For more info go to www.glenhelen.com

THE GLORY DAYS OF THE BIG BRITISH SINGLES (BBS)

During the glory days of the Big British Singles it wasn’t uncommon to see a Matchless and a BSA going for the win. In this case it is Chris Horsfield (161) on the Matchless and Jeff Smith (4) on the BSA. The pudding bowl helmets are a time stamp of the 1960s, but the rope tied to 4 x 4 posts lasted well into the 1970s.
