MXA’S WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: EVERYBODY LOVES WINNERS UNTIL THEY KEEP ON WINNING

FOUR WEEKS AND FOUR CONTROVERSIES: WHICH ONES HAVE YOU BEEN CAUGHT UP IN?

You can count for yourself.

Empty gates: Where have all the riders gone? It takes 40 riders to make the AMA Supercross night show look good. Less than that results in empty gates on the starting lines. Well, Feld had better get used to it because at Foxborough they only had 35 450 riders and 34 250 riders. This meant that everyone who made the trip was in the night program. Time qualifying didn’t eliminate a single rider. The week before in Minneapolis, they didn’t have a enough riders to fill the gates (and timed qualifying didn’t have anyone to bump). Guess what? The week before that in Seattle, they also didn’t have full gates in either class. The last time that time qualifying was used, was at the Indianapolis Supercross for the 450 class (where they had 50 entrants). However for the Indy East/West Shootout race only 18 West riders showed up to join 31 East riders.

Atlanta Supercros Broc TickleFree Broc Tickle.

Broc Tickle and WADA: We’d be willing to bet that Broc Tickle did not purposely take performance enhancing drugs. Most likely, he took a supplement that either didn’t list the ingredients accurately or labeled the offending substance as something else. Guess what? WADA doesn’t care whether you took it by accident or on purpose—they only know that they found it in your urine test (and every athlete who is caught claims that he took it by accident or in an energy drink—and that includes some of the biggest doping cheaters in the world of sports). Lance Armstrong never failed a drug test in his career, but got caught when his teammates squealed on him after they got caught. But, we are sure that Broc didn’t do it to gain an edge and that he deserves nothing more than a 3-month, 6-month or 9-month penalty from the FIM (WADA does not set the punishment). The possible punishment is contingent only if Broc is not able to prove his innocence.

JasoN AndersonJason Anderson.

The Jason Anderson penalty. Jason Anderson was given a one place penalty when he crashed and rode down the side of the track before re-entering. Even though Jason rode slow, entered at the only safe spot on the straight and didn’t gain any advantage on his competitors (in fact, he lost several places), he was punished. That punishment cost him the overall victory. Do the AMA officials know that they have turned a blind eye to lots of racers who raced like maniacs down the sidelines, re-entered by jumping over Tuff Blocks and avoided losing any places in the process with no punishment. So, the only guy who actually obeys a rule gets punished. Ryan Villopoto never obeyed that rule during his career (and Ricky Carmichael wouldn’t even slow down for a MasterCraft boat). Did the AMA really want Jason to turn around on the spot where he crashed and circle back onto the track at the entrance of a rhythm section? That’s what they say they wanted Jason to do! These kinds of inconsistency in enforcement are why most people make fun of AMA officials. The penalty cost Anderson the win, but it earned the AMA officials scorn.

Marvin MusquinThe winner and new featherweight champ.

Musquin and Tomac: What Marvin Musquin did to Eli Tomac in Foxborough is exactly what Eli would have done to him if the situation was reversed. That’s a fact…plain and simple. No amount of whining about it by Eli is going to change the outcome. Supercross tracks are designed with big banked corners to make collisions more common place. The big banking is virtually unnecessary for turning the corner (a three-foot-high berm would achieve the same thing—it’s there to create collision situations). Eli wants Marvin punished by the AMA, which means he wants himself punished for when he plowed Cooper Webb a couple races ago.

Perhaps, in retrospect, Eli shouldn’t have cruised down the starting straight on the last lap like he was a parade float. If he hadn’t tooled along, Musquin wouldn’t have been able to come from out of nowhere to catch him in the next corner. What happened in that corner was what always happens on the last lap of a race with $100,000 up for grabs. And for all who say that Marvin T-boned Eli, it was not a T-bone. Marvin’s front wheel was in front of Eli’s, which is four-feet away from forming a “T” with his front wheel and Eli’s engine cases (and Marvin didn’t rip Eli’s grip off either—that was courtesy of Justin Barcia, who came along while Eli was casually picking his bike up and clipped it).

Face it, no spectators want to pay the ridiculous Supercross ticket prices to see a parade—they got their money’s worth in Foxborough. Marvin has always been too nice in the corners and Eli has a long way to go to live down his actions at Las Vegas last year against Ryan Dungey—where he did try to T-bone Dungey on the last lap (but Dungey was too smart for that). Marvin and Eli don’t have to be friends. They are competitors—and both know that you protect the inside on the last lap. If you don’t, guess what happens?

WAS MARVIN JUST EMULATING ELI? REMEMBER THIS FROM A COUPLE WEEKS AGO?

JOSH HILL GETS A SECOND CHANCE, OR IS IT A THIRD CHANCE, TO RELIVE HIS YOUTH

Josh Hill Supercross - Seattle SX 2018 -147Josh Hill’s first resurrection to factory rider, fill-in division, was ruined by mud in Seattle and an untimely crash.

With Cooper Webb on the sidelines, Yamaha went through Keith McCarty’s Roladex, and gave Josh Hill a call to come back for the Salt Lake City round. This will be Josh’s second shot at Team Yamaha in 2018 (but not his only times on a Yamaha). Josh has considerable talent and he has the motivation. It’s a real feel good story.

KTM TO GO FLAT TRACKING IN 2019

KTM has plan to race the 450 single class with the 450SXF Factory Edition and eventually the twin class with a modified 790 Duke.

KTM has announced its plan to go racing in the 2019 American Flat Track Championship. KTM has appointed former HMC KTM Factory Superbike racer Chris Fillmore as the new Flat Track and Road Racing Team Manager to oversee its racing efforts in the U.S.

John Hinz, President of KTM North America said, “We have been following the changes happening to the racing in American Flat Track and the excitement it’s produced, so as a “Ready to Race” company it was natural for KTM to want to be involved. I am proud to continue a long-standing relationship with Chris Fillmore as the new Team Manager for our Flat Track and Road Racing efforts. Chris has a history with KTM beginning in 2003 when he rode on KTM’s first Super Moto team before leading our RC8R Sport Bike effort in Road Racing, and most recently setting the World record on a 1290 Super Duke R at Pikes Peak. Chris has been working with the MotoAmerica RC Cup racers and is currently heading the Orange Brigade Road Racing Team with two young riders in the MotoAmerica Junior Cup, so we’re confident in his abilities to take on this exciting project.”

For 2019, KTM will field a race team to compete in the AFT Singles Class aboard the championship-proven 450SXF Factory. The future is poised to bring even more excitement in the AFT Twins class with the upcoming 2019 KTM 790 Duke. Chris Fillmore said “It’s pretty exciting to work on this new project to go racing in the American Flat Track Championship. We have the full support of KTM’s global motorsports team with Pit Beirer, Roger DeCoster, Ian Harrison and the Austrian R&D department, which provides a wealth of knowledge and experience behind us. Our goal is to use 2019 as a building year to create our structure and race team in the AFT Singles Class and the 450SXF Factory Edition is a championship-proven race bike and the perfect platform for KTM to engage with the new American Flat Track series. We’re well aware that KTM’s new 790 DUKE has the perfect power plant to compete in the AFT Twins class and we’re excited to see what the future brings in this new journey.”

The 2018 American Flat Track Championship is underway with the first two rounds complete. KTM-mounted rider Dan Bromley has gotten off to a great start as he currently leads the AFT Single class on a privateer-backed KTM 450 SXF. Like this one, which added a watch for more usability during the races.

Moto Trivia answer: CCM was a British firm owned by Alan Clews. when BSA closed their doors, Clews bought all of the stock from the BSA racing department and built his own brand of bikes. CCM stands for Clews Competition machines. They are still in business today, but don’t sell bikes in America.
