MXA’S WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: IT LOOKS BAD, BUT IT MIGHT BE GREAT

SUPERCROSS: SOMETIMES GOOD THINGS COME FROM ADVERSITY

Blake Baggett

Yes, we feel it too. It’s a bummer that Eli Tomac and Marvin Musquin have been injured—and we wish them well, but in the meantime we have the chance to have some really great Supercross battles—without them. If you’ve ever raced, then you know that when the fastest guy in your class gets injured, your hopes go sky-high. You rise to the occasion and put in more effort than you normally would because the reward is suddenly bigger.

Thus, we have five riders in the 450 class who could win…or be in position to take advantage of the next mistake by a front runner. And there are six riders in the 250 West who are within striking distance of the points leader.

Ken Roczen

Plus, Ken Roczen went from super-human to just human with his arm injury. You have to ask yourself if he will become super again in the next couple races? Will Jason Anderson avoid the strategy errors that have cost him in the past? Is Justin Barcia back on his game—and can he ride the pyschological high long enough to get a win? Will Cole Seely find the missing pieces of his game.

With Tomac and Musquin question marks, there is more to watch at every race. Stay tuned.

SWEDISH GRAND PRIX ON AUGUST 12, 2018, CANCELED

Uddevalla is one of the more scenic GP tracks on the schedule (although Sweden is no longer on the schedule), but there are 3 Italian GPs.

According into MXGP promoter Youthstream, “Due to last minute changes, Youthstream regretfully informs that the organizer of the MXGP of Sweden, in Uddevalla, had to cancel the FIM Motocross World Championship event scheduled for the August 12, 2018.” As a result Youthstream had no choice but to cancel the EMX125 and EMX250 races that were schedule for Sweden.

THE WAY WE DRESSED IN 1961

1963_StenLundin-Lito_LucianoCosta-ArchiveThe pudding bowl helmet pre-dates the early days of American motocross, but was prevalent on the European GP circuit in the 1950s and 1960s. Here World Champion Sten Lundin on his Lito models the latest fashion of 1961.

BIKES YOU’VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE: VLASTIMIL VALEK’S 1965 BANANA FRAME JAWA 250

The Jawa Banana Frame was one of the most iconic motocross bikes of the mid-1960s. Jawa and CZ were joined at the hip by their communist commisaars, but Jawa was the better of the two (until they focused on offroad events instead of motocross). The Banana Frame of Vlastimil Valek featured a magnesium engine, one-into-two expansion chamber, Girling shocks and a 246cc engine fueled by a 32mm Jikov carb. The forks were from a CZ.

Valek was sixth in the 1965 FIM 250 World Championships on the Banana Frame and a year later raced a 400cc version to fourth in the 500 World Championships. The Banana Frame was replaced with a conventional frame in 1967. Photos by Justyn Norek.

AMA RULE OF THE WEEK: THE LOGICAL WAY TO SCORE THE 3-MOTO SUPERCROSS RACES

amaruleoftheweek

This new 2018 rule clarifies that during the three special 3-moto Supercross races the scoring will be by the Olympic system — just like at ever other motocross race in America—save for the AMA 250/450 Nationals. The rider who wins the first moto will get 1 point and the rider who finished second will get two points (but they will not get any AMA points in the individual motos). Instead, the scores from the three motos will be added together—with a perfect score being 1-1-1. Just like at your local track, ties are broken by the highest score in the final moto. Thus a 1-3-2 beats a 2-1-3.

The night’s overall winner will get 26 points, second will get 23, third 21 and so on until the 22nd place rider gets 1 point.

REM GLEN HELEN MOTOCROSS ON JANUARY 20

REM will be at Glen Helen for the next six weeks in a row. There will be 34 REM races in 2018 —the next one is Saturday, January 20, the series ends on December 29, 2018.

MXA’S AD OF THE WEEK: IS LEWIS HAMILTON NEXT?

What makes this 1967 Montesa ad so unique has nothing to do with the bike. The rider is the news here. That’s race car champion Dan Gurney jumping the bike (in dress shoes and minus a helmet).
