MXA’S WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: KTM’S NEW DIGS, WORLD TWO-STROKE LIVE & SADDLEBACK’S FATE FINALIZED

(From the Orange County Register by Heather Mcrea) Mother Nature reclaimed the hilly area not far from Irvine Lake that was once a popular motocross course, and now that the natural habitat has been preserved, it is once again opening to people. This time visitors will be able to hike or mountain bike the 3.3 miles of trails that will be open in the newly debuted Saddleback Wilderness during special access events hosted by the OC Parks system.

The new trail system is part of OC Park’s Irvine Ranch Open Space and was donated in 2014 to the county by the Irvine Company. Upon receiving the land donation, the county “went through a robust environmental evaluation process,” said OC Parks Operations Manager John Gump in an email. “Once complete, we were able to design a trail system that avoided locations with sensitive resources, while also doing our best to have trails reach points of interest and scenic viewpoints for the public to enjoy.”

Saddleback Park’s most famous obstacle was Suicide Mountain. It was a massive vertical jump up three levels. Warren Reid demonstrates.

From the late 1960s to 1984, Saddleback Park used much of the land for a “motorcycle playground” enjoyed by motocross riders, off-road trucks and buggies. It was one of the largest motocross tracks on the West Coast. But liability concerns and other pressures ultimately closed it, according to online histories. In the years that followed, it was left to return to its natural state. OC Parks Operations Manager John Gump said you can still see remnants of the former track in the trails. They follow parts of the race track and roads that visitors used to watch the competitors.

This week marked a significant milestone for KTM North America as it celebrated the official grand opening of their brand-new North American Headquarters in Murrieta, California.

There was an official ribbon cutting ceremony this week to unveil the world-class facilities dedicated to the company’s premium motorcycle brands; KTM, Husqvarna Motorcycles, GasGas and MV Agusta; in addition to bicycle brands Husqvarna E-Bicycles, Gasgas Bicycles and Felt Bicycles; Plus, and high-end Power Parts components under the WP brand.

“This is an emotional day for me,” said Stefan Pierer, CEO of Pierer Mobility AG. “Exactly 30 years ago I started in the USA with only a dozen employees. Today, we are Europe’s leading Powered Two-Wheeler group, we’re selling approximately 100,000 units annually in the US market, so more than one billion dollars in sales. The most important success factor for us is racing, that is the driving force that pushed us over the years, even in the US market. Building our new North American headquarters in Murrieta was the biggest single investment we’ve ever made yet. We set a new standard for the whole US market.”

The KTM race team was on hand to show off their new race shop.

The new headquarters is part of KTM North America’s commitment to growing the sport of motorcycling through continuous investment. The North America Group organization has grown from 30 employees in 2009 to almost 360 employees in 2023 and the new three-building complex allows for further room to expand and grow to support its network of more than 1000 independently owned small businesses across North America.

USA Sales, racing and dealer support for KTM, Husqvarna, GasGas and iconic MV Agusta road bikes will all be based out of the $53 million dollar facility.

The development, which is situated on 20 acres of land adjacent to the French Valley Airport just off Winchester Road, was initially announced in August 2021 and the project officially broke ground in November of 2021. Following an extraordinary development phase over the past 15 months, the $53 million corporate campus is now operational with three state-of-the-art buildings that include over 130,000 square feet of space dedicated to the company’s technical development, administrative offices, media relations, dealer training, warehouse and world championship racing departments, with 12 additional acres set aside for future development.

Chase Sexton is cursed. He was on his way to what looked like and easy win in Seattle when he went over the bars when his front wheel hit a deep rut. He got up to finished 5th, but  Chase is now 22-points behind the tied-up pair of Tomac and Webb.

Cooper Webb’s finger gun has been holstered since KTM’s Roger DeCoster and Ian Harrison told him to stop it when he taunted Ken Roczen at Anaheim in 2019. However, at Seattle, Cooper pulled his gun out again, this time he aimed it at Chase Sexton after his heat race win. Taunting another rider can be an effective psychological game, but it can backfire later in the season.

This grainy photo was shot at the first international motocross race in Southern California. It took place in Dehesa, just outside San Diego, on December 1967. It is almost always claimed to be a photograph of Roger DeCoster (CZ) and Torsten Hallman (Husqvarna) battling for the lead, but that is not accurate. It is actually a photo of Roger DeCoster and a high flying Lars Larsson. The confusion stems from the fact that Torsten Hallman was injured and couldn’t race, but Lars Larsson, who had just arrived in the USA to demonstrate Husqvarna motocross bikes for Edison Dye, filled in for Torsten. The number 1 on Lars’ bike was there because Lars was on Torsten’s race bike.
