MXA TEAM TESTED: ARC 2019 KAWASAKI KX450 POWERLEVER

When we had trouble with our stock 2019 Kawasaki clutch lever, we called ARC’s Bob Barnett. If he’s good enough for Eli, he’s good enough for us. When we met ARC’s Bob Barnett at the track, we told him we had two issues with the stock 2019 KX450 clutch lever. The first issue was that the clutch lever hit our fingers when we pulled the clutch in and, because of the lack of space on the 7/8-inch crossbar-equipped KX450 handlebars, we couldn’t move the perch far enough over to give the lever more room. Bob said that he had a lever that could fix that. The second issue was that we were burning up KX450 clutches for no good reason. Bob said that he knew what the problem was and had a lever that could fix it. He immediately began installing a CNC-machined lever with lots of secret widgets hidden inside.

Bob installed his 6-way adjustable PowerLever on our 2019 KX450. This isn’t just any lever. It comes with three “FlipChip” inserts that give you six different power ratios for your clutch. The FlipChip is a small block of aluminum with divots machined on each side of it. Each divot is machined into a different location on the aluminum block. The six divots offer different ratios that change the distance from the lever pivot center to the centerline of the push-rod that actuates the clutch master cylinder plunger. By changing from the softest divot to the hardest divot, you can change how far the master cylinder plunger is pushed. In the case of our KX450 clutch mechanism, we needed the FlipChip divot that pushed the plunger sooner and farther for the same throw of the lever. This disengaged the clutch sooner and thus farther away from our fingers.

It turns out that when the stock clutch lever hits your fingers, the clutch is not fully disengaged, which means that you are slipping the clutch every time you pull it in. With ARC’s PowerLever, the clutch is fully disengaged. It works likes this: when you use the 14mm chip, you get the “softest” feel. If you flip it to the 19mm divot, you get the “hardest” feel. You can switch to any of the six divots to find the best feel for you. Additionally, ARC clutch levers compensate for Rekluse-style clutches, and hydraulic clutches benefit greatly from the ability to overdrive the master cylinder, and to get that “pinch” more pull when needed.

It solved our problem with the KX450 clutch. Plus, we liked the shape and bend of the ARC levers much better than the KX450 levers, especially because the 2019 KX450 comes with totally different shaped levers on the clutch and brake. We added an ARC brake lever along with the clutch lever to make the two levers feel the same. If an ARC lever breaks, the company will replace it for a nominal $15 fee.

DIGITS: $129.99 (PowerLever clutch)—www.arclevers.comor (714) 543-0362.

MXA RATING: We suffered a recurring problem with the 2019 clutch lever and ARC fixed it. Kudos.

AMA RULE OF THE WEEK: HOW THE RIDERS GET PAID

amaruleoftheweekAMARULESPURSEPAYMENTGone are the days when riders lined up after an AMA National waiting to get handed the cash they earned, so that they could buy gas to get to the next race on the schedule. Now, the riders receive their purse money by check. Not just by check, but also by direct deposit to their bank (like anyone would trust the AMA with their direct deposit bank number). The kicker? The AMA takes two weeks to process the payment. Given that the AMA has to write 160 checks after each race (to pay the top 40 by moto in all four National motos) that is a lot of work for their small staff.

It should be noted that no matter how generous the AMA feels about handing out approximately $70,000 per week in purse money to the riders at a National (and $96,000 a week at a Supercross), it’s not their money. The AMA doesn’t pay the riders a red cent. The purse money comes from each individual National promoter and from Feld in Supercross. The AMA’s only visible investment is in clipboards and AMA shirts—so they can look busy.

Instead, the AMA (or its surrogates) takes money from the riders and teams hand-over-fist, but really don’t give anything back. It is often ask why riders have to pay an entry fee to provide entertainment for the ticket holders. Or why factory  teams have to pay thousands of dollars to park in the National pits. Do you think Beyonce has to pay to sell out a stadium? And no matter how you cut it, the riders on the track are the talent. They draw the crowd—without them there is no crowd. The riders shouldn’t have to pay a entry fee, which the AMA then pretends to dole back out to them as purse money.

1989 ATK AD: MEMORIES OF THE WAY WE WERE & WHAT WE RODE

ATK1989adATK was an American made dirt bike (although it used an Austrian engine and Dutch suspension). This 1989 ad was for the 406 two-stroke.

ATK 560 ACTION: NOT ALWAYS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE

1987ATKXR600craigdavisIt’s a 1987 ATK 560…or is it?

Back in 1987 the MXA wrecking crew tested at Reche Canyon all the time. It was our second favorite place (after White Sands). Here, Craig Davis powers what looks like a 1987 ATK 560 four-stroke through a lush berm — with the canyon in the background. But, all is not as it seems. What Craig was riding for MXA that day was an ATK chassis with a Honda XR600 engine. ATK’s Horst Leitner was a former GP rider who raced in England and was familiar with the Rickman brothers Metisse frame kits. So, when Horst started ATK it seemed natural to build rolling ATK chassis that accepted Honda XR600 four-stroke engines. The buyer used his Honda engine, forks and wheels—ATK supplied everything else. The ATK chassis handled better and was a lot lighter than the typical XR600. The ATK kit cost $4400.

MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: 2019 YZ65/YZ85 MOTO TASSINARI VFORCE4R REED VALVE

Pro Circuit carries the new VForce4R reed valve system by Moto Tassinari for the 2019 YZ65/85. Moto Tassinari’s VForce4R reed valve system is designed with a shallower petal angle to allow the reeds to open further and with much less force than that of the stock reed system—this equates to better fuel flow and, ultimately, more power. The shallower reed petal angle also reduces the tension on the petals resulting in increased durability. Moto Tassinari’s VForce4R reed valve system also incorporates an all-new manifold, reed cage and air guide to boost overall performance. Pick up a VForce4R reed system at Pro Circuit for your minibike rider and ensure he or she is getting the best performance from their 2019 YZ65 or YZ85. The retail price is $178 at www.procircuit.com

CLASSIC MXA TEST RIDER PHOTOS: WHO’S THAT ON CHAD’S CHAMPIONSHIP RM-Z450?

Can you name this MXA test rider?

Back in 2009 the MXA wrecking crew was testing Chad’s Reed’s Rockstar/Makita Suzuki RM-Z450 and we asked a young kid to help us with the testing. His name was Cole Seely. In 2009 Seely was an unknown privateer on a RM-Z250. He  was 18th in the AMA 250 East and in his first year as  an AMA Pro. We saw something in and Cole put him on Chad’s bike and now everyone can see what we saw now that he is a Team Honda rider.
