• FORD INTRODUCES A SMALL PICKUP TRUCK STARTING AT $20,000
The all-new Ford Maverick will be the most affordable pickup you can buy (Starting at $19,995, with a claimed 40 miles per gallon, thanks to its standard hybrid powertrain. It’ll also be Ford’s smallest truck. It has a 4.5-foot bed (with the tailgate down, its flat load floor measures six feet), four-doors, five-seats and a 1500 pound payload. Yes, the bed is small, but somehow, motocross racers were able to make do with short bed pickup trucks from Datsun, Toyota, Mazda and Chevy in the 1970s and 1980s. The bloated behemoths that dominate the truck market today are too tall, too gas guzzling and too expensive for a guy who just wants a truck he can throw his bike in the back and head the track (and still use to haul the kids of soccer practice). You might need a Bed Extender to haul bikes, gas cans, chairs and bike stands in the Maverick, but it goes a claimed 500 miles on a tank of gas and volts.
The down sides are that it’s a unibody vehicle (not a body on frame truck), is front wheel drive, has a 2.5-liter inline-four cylinder engine (aided by an electric motor) and uses a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). And, we highly doubt that anyone will ever find one at a dealership for $20,000.

Not many Americans have hear of Isak Gifting. He isn’t a hot new 250 Supercross prospect, but the Swedish racer seized his opportunity in a handful of 250 GPs to show that he had the speed to be a front runner in the 2021FIM World Motocross Championships. Isak made the podium at two GPs last year podium on two occasions! Now, with a full off-season of preparation under his belt, Isak’s never been better prepared to go racing. We recently caught up with one of the hottest prospects in the MX2 class ahead of the opening round of the 2021 season.
ISAK, WE’RE JUST A FEW DAYS AWAY FROM ROUND ONE OF THE MX2 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP NOW. HOW’S IT GOING, HAVE YOU BEEN LEARNING ANY RUSSIAN? It’s all really good, but I’ve not learned any Russian! My preparation has been great. It’s been a long winter and then the series was delayed, but as round one got closer and closer, I’ve been feeling better and better on the bike. It’s given me time to develop the bike a little bit more and I feel mentally and physically strong. At the moment, everything is positive.
IS THE DIGA PROCROSS GASGAS TEAM IS THE FIRST TEAM YOU’VE EVER BEEN ON? Yes. It’s been a huge difference. The support, materials, the whole team, testing. It’s been a big change, but one that I really needed. When I joined the team, I went racing straight away with a good set-up, but not one that was developed for me. It was a great base setting, but I’ve now had time with the team to work together and get really comfortable on the bike. I also have a trainer, Joel Smets, in my corner as well, which has made my conditioning the best it can be.
YOU IMMEDIATELY PUT TOGETHER AN IMPRESSIVE RUN OF RESULTS. WHAT WAS THING THAT ALLOWED YOU TO REACH THAT NEXT LEVEL? I just needed the chance to join a team. When I got it, I knew that I had to work hard, keep focused, and then the results would come. The opportunity came at just the right time and I’m really thankful that I was approached by the Diga Procross GasGas team.
2021 WILL BE YOUR FIRST FULL YEAR IN THE 250 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS. WILL YOU COME OUT GUNS BLAZING AT ROUND ONE THIS WEEKEND? Being able to work with Joel has been really positive with my approach and conditioning for this season. We pushed really hard in the winter, but now it’s a case of maintaining what I have. We train in certain ways to maintain my fitness, but should I need to push a little bit harder at any time, then I will be able to.
THE SWEDISH GP WILL TAKE PLACE IN AUGUST. DO YOU ENJOY RACING AT HOME? I’ve raced in the EMX 250 class at Uddevalla and the support was amazing. I really hope that we can have fans there for my first 250 GP in Sweden. When the fans give you a boost, you perform just that little bit better. I really hope there is a big crowd . I know that many people will come if it’s allowed. I’m looking forward to that race the most.
IT’S STILL EARLY IN YOUR CAREER, BUT WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN A COUPLE YEAR’S TIME? First. I’d like to win the MX2 World Championship. It’s easy to say, but I feel mentally and physically strong enough to get it done. After that, I think I can be a great MXGP class rider too. I know I’m strong, and I’ve been working on my technique a lot to be a smarter racer, which will help when I move up to the 450.
AT THE END OF THE 2021 SEASON, WHAT WILL YOU CONSIDER TO BE A ‘GOOD SEASON? Everyone wants to be World Champion, but I2021 will be a learning season. I have to be realistic. It will be a building year, and I know I can develop my riding further. I proved last year that I can podium, so this gives me a lot of confidence. I’m definitely ready for the next step and I think that on the sand tracks, my ability is a little better and I can push for wins. Having said that, it’s my first full season in MX2 so there is no pressure. I just need to be consistent, be in the top 10 each moto and see where we end up. I think I can finish the 2021 season in a good position overall. I believe that top eight is an achievable.

Although you only think of Pro-Boot MX as a company that resoles well-used Motocross boots, they recently came upon a boot that had a bad luck story. Pro-Boot MX’s Randy Nagel got a brand-new Gaerne SG12 boot from a guy who ran his foot into something that split the metal toe cap in two and tore a hole through the side of the boot. • MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: EZ-UP ENDEAVOR POP-UP AWNING
WHAT IS IT? Every motocross racer has experience with E-Z Up awnings (and E-Z Up has almost become the generic name for all pop-up awnings, regardless of their brand name—sort of like Kleenex with facial tissues). While the majority of motocross racers have had positive experiences with E-Z Ups protecting them from sun and rain, some have had awnings fly away in gusts of wind and have had to deal with legs that stick, engagement pins that won’t release and tops that fade. E-Z Up has heard all of the complaints and has responded with the E-Z Up Endeavor model. It is the beefed-up, rugged, he-man version of the instant shade business. Bigger, stronger and better.
E-Z Up offers eight standard colors (punch, limeade, black, royal blue, gray, orange, splash and white), plus 17 premium colors. For $839, you get a plain-wrap canopy, but E-Z Up’s art department can print logos, photos and custom designs on any color canopy. They even have a Fast Track program that expedites jobs in one day. There is a graphics specialist in-house at E-Z Up who can help you with your desired artwork needs. Obviously, the cost of custom artwork is extra and depends on your imagination (and wallet).
The Endeavor model is only available in the 10×10-foot size (although E-Z Up offers sizes as large as 10×20 feet in other models). The Endeavor weighs 64 pounds, but thanks to its all-aluminum frame, it is lighter than most steel awnings by several pounds. The box-stock Endeavor comes with its own bag for storage, or you can order a wheeled roller bag to tote the awning with less effort. We also have a 10-foot sidewall to block the sun when it is at low angles early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
The Endeavor frame is incredibly well made. The octagon-shaped aluminum legs are 2 inches in diameter (compared to 1.25 inches on the typical aluminum-framed awning and 1 inch for a steel-framed awning). The Endeavor’s foot pads, base plate and end caps are upsized to correspond to the jumbo-sized octagon legs. The Endeavor is easy to raise and lower thanks to large pull pins at the top of the chassis and five-position toggle adjusters on the legs, which offer 15 inches of height adjustment. The strength of these critical components is significantly upgraded. Under the canopy there are several built-in hooks to hang accessories from.
The commercial-grade polyester canopy meets CPAI-84, NFPA-701 and CAN/ULC-S109 fire-resistant standards. This is important if you want to use your E-Z Up indoors as a display booth or for advertising.

• MXA TEAM TESTED: ALPINESTARS TECH 7 BOOTS
The Alpinestars Tech 7 boot is a top-level boot at a mid-level price point. The Tech 10 boots are still Alpinestars’ premier model, but the Tech 7 is a more affordable and more flexible alternative. The Tech 10s are known for being on the stiff side when compared to other premium motocross boots; the Tech 7 boots are known for being on the opposite side of the spectrum. They’re super flexible.
The Alpinestars Tech 7 boots are known for being comfortable to wear and flexible to ride in. The Tech 7s feature a biomechanical pivot on the lateral side of the boot that allows for increased flexibility with less break-in time. Plus, it adds safety by keeping your ankle from moving laterally beyond its capabilities. The boot also uses soft foam reinforcements around the ankle for increased padding and comfort. The Achilles tendon area on the back of the boot has been redesigned to allow more flexibility as well.
The Alpinestars Tech 7 boots require almost zero break-in time. They are pliable, flexible and don’t hinder movement on the track. Two factors make the Tech 7 more flexible than the Tech 10. One is that it doesn’t have the bi-density front flexion control frame, and the other is that there is no inner bootie. The front flexion control piece is new on the Tech 10s, and it sits in between the bottom and middle strap while working like suspension for your ankle. One downside to the performance of the Tech 7 is that the plastic on the medial side of the boot deforms outward whenever you bend your ankle.
Comparing the Tech 10 and Tech 7 boots back to back, there’s more wiggle room in the Tech 7. Also, without the inner bootie, your foot sits deeper into the boot, giving you a more traditional feel on the footpegs, whereas the Tech 10 boot makes you stand slightly taller. The toe box on the Tech 7 boot is also wider, which can make the sizing more generous. As for the calf area, the entrance to the Tech 7 boot is wider, making it easier to put on and take off while also accommodating riders with bigger calves.
The Alpinestars Tech 7 boots hold up well. Typical wear and tear shows up on the soles and inner part of the boot, but the Tech 7 boots don’t lose any strength. The Tech 7 soles are durable, using a dual-compound material and an inner steel shank. They give you a positive boot-to-peg feel without sacrificing comfort and strength.
(5) Price. How can the $369.95 Alpinestars Tech 7 boots be $230 cheaper than the Tech 10s ($599.95) but still be considered a premium boot? After all, the Tech 7s lack the Tech 10’s inner bootie (which provides additional foot support), dynamic heel compression protector (cushions against hard impacts to your feet), and rear blade system (protects against hyper extension). Overall, the Tech 7 boots have fewer moving parts. This makes them lighter and more flexible but also not as strong, so they’re prone to deformation when flexed. The difference between the two boots is noticeable, and the price reflects that. Still, even if money weren’t a factor, some MXA test riders would choose the Tech 7s over the Tech 10s because they are more comfortable.
