THE LAST REM MOTOCROSS POSTER WAS A NICE TOUCH

When Frank and Myra Thomason decided to stop promoting the REM races at Glen Helen after their final March 19, 2022, race, the Glen Helen website ran this race poster in honor of the final race (although Glen Helen will continue holding the legendary Saturday races starting on April 2 (see race flier below) — it featured a Debbi Tamietti photo of long-time REM regulars Lars Larsson (13) and Jody Weisel (192) riding through a cloud.

“SATURDAY AT THE GLEN” KICKS OFF THIS SATURDAY, APRIL 2

Even though REM’s Frank and Myra retired, Glen Helen has vowed to keep the Saturday REM tradition alive by hosting the next generation of Saturday motocross races. The gate fees have been lowered to $10 per person. The entry fees have been lowered to $30 (with post entries at $40). Practice starts at 8:00 a.m. (instead of 8:30 a.m.) and the first moto will be at 9:00 a.m. As an experiment, the first moto of each class will get a parade lap to see how much the track changed since their practice session. Additionally, John Allen will still be building the track for Saturdays just as he did for REM.

To see how pre-entry works for “Saturday at the Glen,” all you have to do is Click Here to see the pre-entry sign-up system.

GODSPEED! JAROSLAV FALTA (1951-2022)

JAROSLAVfalta52Jaroslav Falta.

Jaroslav Falta died suddenly at the age of 71 on Sunday, March 27, 2022. The news was reported by Jaroslav’s daughter Martina, who wrote,” Without warning, the person with the biggest heart left us last night. I love you so much, daddy.” Jarolav was born in Rumburk, Czecholovakia, on March 23, 1951.

During his ten-year 250 Grand Prix motocross career, Jaroslav Falta raced CZ motorcycles through the 1970s right up to 1980. He finished in the top ten eight times. Illustration: Timothy P. Dolly

Jaroslav Falta receiving his Czech Medal of Merit earlier this month.

Jaroslav often said that he was better known outside of Czechoslovakia than in his home country, but he was voted the “Czech Motocross Rider of the Century” in 2020 and earlier this month he was awarded the Medal of Merit of the First Degree by Czech Republic President Milos Zeman.

Jaroslav at his 71st birthday celebration just a eight days ago.

Racing for the communist-controlled Czechoslovakian CZ team Jaroslav Falta had a different perspective on the sport than most riders. He missed the glory days of CZ dominance in the late ’60s and had to ride outdated early 1970s machinery against the might of the Japanese works bike (led by former CZ riders Joel Robert and Roger DeCoster on Suzukis). Then, he was a victim of Russian team tactics in 1974 that cost him a shot at the 250 World Championship. However, he did get to come to America to race and won the 1974 Los Angeles Coliseum Supercross.

Jaroslav Falta had “almost” won the 1974 250cc World Championship. He “almost won” because at the final round of the 1974 250cc World Championships in Wohlen, Switzerland, Russian KTM rider Guennady Moiseev held a slim 16-point lead over Falta. And, in what appeared to be a plot, Russian riders Pavel Rulev, Viktor Popenko and Evgeni Rybalchenko attacked Falta mercilessly, culminating in the infamous “Popenko T-Bone!” Amazingly, Falta fought back to win both motos, but the Russians protested the results, saying that Falta had jumped the starting gate. The FIM jury sided with the Russians and relegated Falta to second place for the race and out of the 250cc World Championship by 6 points.

THE WILD WILD 250 WEST GOT EVEN WILDER IN SEATTLE

Hunter Lawrence 2022 Seattle Supercross-8978Hunter Lawrence (96) took his second win of the 250 West season thanks to Michael Mosiman knocking Christian Craig down and Craig’s falling bike bending Mosiman’s rear brake rotor. Those two occurences gave Hunter a big enough lead to hold on or the victory.

Christian Craig’s on track performances are excellent, but his podium performances haven’t endeared him to the fans. He does have a solid 26-point lead over Hunter Lawrence (which is exactly one race worth of points).

Michael Mosiman was the fastest man in the Seattle 250 West main event. Mosiman caught and passed early leader Christian Craig, who pushed on into a no-win situation and got knocked down for it. Mosiman is third in 250 West points, but 30 points behind Craig.

Joe Shimoda made a last corner attempt to pass Mosiman for third, but it failed. His fourth place finish moved him up to 11 points out of 4th for the series.

THE APRIL 2022 ISSUE OF MXA IS OUT! THE BEST DEAL IN THE SPORT!

If you don’t subscribe to MXA, you are missing a whole different world of motocross news, facts, tests and photos. We cover the full spectrum of the sport—from four-stroke tests, two-stroke tests, retro tests, race coverage, technology and product tests.

For example, the just released April 2022 issue has a shootout between a perfectly retro-modded 2000 Kawasaki KX500 against a 1994 Honda CR500. We also went back in time to retro test the fabled 2010 Husaberg upside-down engine FX450. The Jens Elmwall-designed engine was a technical masterpiece—but it didn’t sell, was hard to work on and lots of Husaberg’s cutting edge innovations were too far ahead of the times. Did we mention that it weighed 260 pounds?

We also sat down with former AMA Pro and 250 West Supercross winner Casey Lytle to see what he’s been up to since his Honda of Troy, Yamaha of Troy, FMF Honda and Pro Circuit Kawasaki days. Casey now works at KTM where he has been the Factory Team Manager, Red Bull KTM team test rider, Race Team coordinator, West Coast Customer Service Manager and has since moved over to the KTM testing department where he oversees development on the new production bikes.

Inside the mag is a detailed analysis of the 20 Innermost secrets of the 2023 KTM 450SXF. There are things inside the Factory Edition bikes that you never dreamed of or even knew existed—we explain all of them. Plus,  you don’t want to miss the regular insights from Jody Weisel, Jamie Ellis and Daryl Ecklund or our tests of Alex Martin’s ClubMX Yamaha YZ450F, the 2022GasGas MC 250F and 2022 KTM 350SXF.

Even bigger is MXA’s 2022 125 Two-Stroke Shootout where we pit the KTM 125SX against the Yamaha YZ125, Gas Gas MC 125 and Husqvarna TC125‚ complete with dyno charts, weights and torque numbers. And, if you subscribe to Motocross Action right now, you will get a $25 credit from Rocky MountainATV/MC  that will more than cover the cost of your subscription.
