MXA’S WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: THE SINCEREST FORM OF FLATTERY

• HAVE YOU SEE THIS BIKE? VOLCON GRUNT ELECTRIC

The Volcon Grunt is a fat-tire electric motorcycle with a 37 kW (50 hp) motor that delivers 102 N/m (75 lb-ft) of torque and propels the bike to a claimed 60 mph (96 km/h) top speed in 6 seconds. It also comes with a maximum range of 100 miles (160 km). Suffice it say that your mileage may vary. The Volcon batteries will be swappable, so even if the range isn’t quite as good, a spare battery could easily double it. Built in Texas, Volcon can be recharged with a standard 120-volt outlet in just two hours. Suffice it say that your charging time may vary. The Grunt’s electric drive system has three different ride modes allowing you to tune the system to your desired riding style. The Grunt’s all-electric powertrain is IP67-rated and fully waterproof. Don’t worry about pressure washing or stalling out crossing deep rivers or streams. The Grunt can actually be ridden underwater. Volcon is taking reservations now at www.volcon.com for $5995.

• DO YOU THINK VOLCON SAW THIS BIKE? ROKON TRAIL-BREAKER

Let’s not give Volcon too much credit since there has been a trail bike just like the Grunt for sale since 1960. The classic Rokon Trail-Breaker, may not have electric propulsion, but the hollow drum wheels can provide floatation or space to carry up to 2.5 gallons of extra fuel or water. The 208cc Kohler, single-cylinder, four-stroke, fan cooled, all-wheel-drive, automatic torque converter and three-gear range selector allow the Trail-Breaker to go any where. Trail-Breakers have been used by the United States’ Armed Forces, Forest Service, Fish and Game departments in 25 states, plus being used bycountless big game hunters, trail builders, farmers, ranchers, and even treasure hunters. It retails for $7775 and is available in four different models at www.rokon.com or by calling (603) 335-3200. If you live in California, South Lake Cycle (near Lake Isabella) is the only Rokon dealer in California. Go to www.southlakecycle.com or call (760) 378-2643 to learn more.

MXA TEAM TESTED: THOR MX PULSE GEAR

Pulse MX gear is the mid-level line from Thor MX, and it has been raced in this season by factory KTM riders Cooper Webb and Marvin Musquin, as well as Star Racing Yamaha riders Dylan Ferrandis and Shane McElrath. The Pulse MX gear was designed to check the boxes in the cost, durability, flexibility and breathability departments. Thor Pulse gear is available in orange/black, black/red, blue/white, army green/acid, blackout and acid/black (shown above).

The new Thor MX Pulse jersey comes with laser-cut holes for ventilation and has a dimpled mesh pattern on moisture-wicking polyester fabric to increase breathability. It also comes with hybrid raglan sleeves. A raglan sleeve differs from a standard sleeve in that it extends up onto the shoulder and is attached by a diagonal seam from the underarm to the neckline. Most motocross jerseys have standard sleeves that end at the shoulder. You won’t notice it on the track, but your girlfriend might pick up on the stylish Thor designer sleeves.

The Thor MX Pulse pant has been redesigned with strategic placement of the materials to offer a balance between mobility and durability. It also has new laser-cut air holes to keep you comfortable during long days in the saddle. The 600D polyester material and double stitching work together to improve strength in high-wear zones while teaming up with in-motion stretch panels for flexibility. The pant uses a unique zipper and button closure, and the waistband relies on a dual Velcro sans-a-belt system to adjust the size of the waist. The pant also features full-grain leather knee patches that are 9 inches tall by 6 inches wide and an inner mesh liner that extends to the top of the knees with a small pocket built into the liner so you can store keys or other valuables.

The Thor MX Pulse’s form-fitting cut gives the rider a snug and well-tailored feel. Thor’s top-of-the-line Prime Pro gear is its “athletic fit” gear, thanks to its spandex-infused cycling-style construction. The Pulse gear does not qualify for admission into the form-fitting, skin-tight, athletic-fit category. Thor’s midline MX Pulse gear sacrifices some mobility and breathability to gain more durability. The Pulse gear isn’t the most flexible gear made, but it’s very durable, and we appreciate that. The MXA wrecking crew feels that when a rider invests in new gear, he wants it to look good for a long time.

The Thor MX Pulse pants are available in sizes from 28 to 44 inches. The jerseys are offered in sizes from small to triple extra large. On an added note, Thor MX doesn’t sell direct to the public. To buy Thor gear, you’ll need to go through your local dealer or mail-order warehouse.

This is the MX Pulse gear in orange/black.

Did we have issues? Yes.The Velcro sans-a-belt straps on each side of the Thor MX Pulse waistband have the ability to take up a total of 6 inches of slack; however, the pants didn’t have elastic to permit extra room for bigger testers. It worked great for smaller riders, but our bigger tester’s egos were damaged. The straps only helped make the pants smaller, not larger. Some MXA test riders who normally fit into size 32-inch Thor Prime Pro pants couldn’t squeeze into the Pulse pants of the same size. If you’re on the big side of size 32, you might want to try these pants on at the dealership before you buy.

DIGITS: $39.95 (jersey), $114.95 (pant)www.thormx.com or your local dealer.

MXA RATING: We liked the simple yet bold color options on the Thor MX Pulse gear. We also appreciated the price point and durability. If you want gear that will last, buy Pulse. If you want performance-oriented flexibility, buy Prime Pro.

MXA SHOOTOUT VIDEO: 2021 KAWASAKI KX450 VERSUS YAMAHA YZ450F

HAVE YOU SEEN THE FEBRUARY 2021 ISSUE OF MXA YET? SPECIAL SUBSCRIPTION OFFER BELOW

What’s in the newest issue of MXA? How about Shootout between the 2021 Honda CRF450 and the 2021 Husqvarna FC450—go ahead and guess which one won, you have a 50/50 chance of being right. Or how about complete and thorough tests of the 2021 KTM 450SXF, 2021 Yamaha YZ250F, 2021 Kawasaki KX450F cross-country, 2021 KTM 250SXF and Carson Brown’s BBR Honda 190.

We wanted to take a little confusion out of what is the most confusing shootout season ever by doing  shootouts against worthy contenders—this month it was the 2021 Honda CRF450 against the 2021 Husqvarna FC450.

Why is MXA testing the 2021 Kawasaki KX450X cross-country bike? That’s simple, we race cross-country races, SRA GPs, WORCS races and endurance races all the time. And since the KX450X is just a KX450 motocross model with a few off-road concession, we felt right at home on it.

The 2021 KTM 250SXF is a high-rpm rocket ship that just happens to be blessed with a strong midrange and usable low-end. This is the magic formula for success in the 250 class.

The 2021 Yamaha YZ250F has the perfect low-to-mid powerband for the average racer or play rider. It doesn’t have the high rpm power of the KTM, Husky, GasGas and Kawasaki, but it gets out of tight corners better.

In the hierarchy of Austrian motocross bikes the 2021 KTM, 2021 Husqvarna FC450 and 2021 GasGas MC450F managed to use the same shared package three different ways. If you asked KTM what the 450SXF was designed for, they would tell you that it was “Ready to Race.” We concur.

MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: “PRO-BOOT MX” REMEDIAL BOOT REPAIR

Note the big tear in the toe box area of this brand-new boot.

Although you only think of Pro-Boot MX as a company that resoles well-used Motocross boots, they recently came upon a boot that had a bad luck story. Pro-Boot MX’s Randy Nagel got a brand-new Gaerne SG12 boot from a guy who ran his foot into something that split the metal toe cap in two and tore a hole through the side of the boot. Luckily, he didn’t get hurt. He sent the boot to Pro-Boot MX, not to have the brand-new soles replaced, but to see if they could do something about the big tear in the toe box.

After the repair, the boot is good to go.

Randy glued the inner padding back together, welded up the crack and color matched the area with a flexible bonding material. The Pro-Boot MX repair looked pretty good, especially for a new boot that looked like it’s effective lifespan was only one ride. Total cost including a new toe cap and the repair was under $50.00 (plus return shipping). So, if you have a run-in with a footpeg or your kickstarter gouges your boot, don’t throw it away, send it to www.pro-bootmx.com or call (507) 534-1247.
