MXA WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: IT’S TIME TO START MAKING MOVES

• SUPERCROSS SUCCESS IS MEASURED ON A SLIDING SCALE

Blake Baggett (4) is the highest placed 450 rider not on an official factory team — but he not a true-to-life privateers because his team gets works bikes from KTM.

With only 11 full-time 450 factory riders on the Big-Six teams, success has to be measured (at the lowest level) by making the top ten in points, but more stringently by being in the top five. Of course, the top three is great. Number 1 is the ultimate goal. For privateers and factory-supported privateer teams anything in the top ten is success. Obviously, Tomac, Dungey and Musquin are pulling their weight. They have consistently been on the podium and all three have won races. After the big three, you get Cole Seely and Jason Anderson. Both looked like they could crack the top three early in the season, but ran afoul of the starting gate or, in Anderson’s case, the AMA officials. The top five is good for Jason and Cole because they are improving each season. Plus, heading into Seattle, no one in the top five has been mathematically eliminated from Championship contention yet—everyone out of the top five is out of the title chase.

Where a rider finishes matters. It’s better to be in the top five than not and better to be in the top ten than not—because the top ten make the record books—11th on back are after thoughts.

Factory support riders Blake Baggett and Davi Millsaps are sixth and seventh. They have been engaged in an intramural battle, in front of many full factory riders, for the top spot at the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC KTM team. Broc Tickle is eighth with Chad Reed and Dean Wilson tied for ninth/tenth.

AMSOIL LAUNCHES NEW BRAKE FLUIDS & PARTS CLEANER

Amsoil has introduced three new products to better meet the needs of modern brake system maintenance and operation. New Amsoil DOT 3 & 4 Synthetic Brake Fluid, Amsoil Dominator DOT 4 Synthetic Racing Brake Fluid and Amsoil  Brake & Parts Cleaner have been precisely formulated to help boost the performance, safety and reliability of brake systems in automotive, racing and powersports applications.

Amsoil DOT 3 & 4 Synthetic Brake Fluid delivers maximum ABS and traction-control performance. It helps extend the life of essential components, including calipers, wheel cylinders, seals, lines, master cylinders and ABS control valves. Even in severe operating conditions, its low compressibility results in a firm, consistent brake pedal feel. Amsoil DOT 3 & 4 Synthetic Brake Fluid is a DOT 5.1 product that meets and exceeds the specifications of DOT 3 and DOT 4 formulations, providing excellent protection against water contamination. Recommended for use in passenger car/light truck and non-racing powersports applications.

Amsoil Dominator DOT 4 Synthetic Racing Brake Fluid is specially formulated for intense racing applications. It features the ultra-high boiling points required during extreme racing conditions, providing exceptional vapor lock protection. Amsoil Dominator DOT 4 Synthetic Racing Brake Fluid resists brake fade for a confident brake feel all the way to the finish line.

Amsoil Brake & Parts Cleaner is a professional-strength product that quickly and effectively removes oil, grease, brake fluid and other contaminants from brake parts and automotive components. Leaves no residue, helping to reduce or eliminate brake squeal and chatter. Amsoil Brake & Parts Cleaner has a quick-drying, chlorinated formulation that gives drivers and auto technicians the peace-of-mind that they are using one of the strongest and most effective formulas available in the market place.  This product is unavailable in California or New Jersey.

MXA MOTO-CHALLENGE: BE LIKE MIKE, BUT FIRST NAME HIM

Every rider shown here is named Mike. This is a fairly easy quiz because they have all won high-profile AMA races.
The answers are on the bottom of the page.

MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: FASTERUSA COMPLETE WHEELSET

FasterUSA’s complete wheelsets are built up from made-in-the-USA hubs and come ready to bolt on as race wheels or practice wheels. FasterUSA’s hubs are CNC-machined in the United States from certified 6061-T6 aluminum. The hubs have double bearings on the drive side of the hub for increased strength and durability.
FasterUSA will build whatever hub/rim/spoke combination you want. Custom anodizing is also available on the hubs, but the rim and spoke colors are limited to the D.ID. or Excel selections. They cost $463.00 (complete rear); $566.00 (complete front). Prices include shipping in the contiguous United States. More info at www.fasterusa.com or (951) 600-7048.

MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: KALI SHIVA HELMET

At 1050 grams (2.3 pounds) the Kali Shiva is the lightest and smallest DOT full-face helmet on the market. While being light is a great talking point, Kali was focused on creating a smaller (30% smaller than the average helmet) and lighter (400 grams lighter than the average high-end helmet) helmet because recent research indicates that by reducing the size of a helmet by 10% could reduce the effects of rotational forces by 22%. The larger or heavier the helmet is, the more torque is being applied (Force = Mass*Acceleration).

The Shiva also has three different densities of foam in-molded into the helmets shell. The foam liner has different density foam molded together in pyramid-style shapes with a softer layer around the head and firmer foam in the pyramids to dissipate higher loads. “In-molded” means that the foam liner and outer shell are molded as one-piece. The Shiva also has a breakaway visor, less angular shape and integrated camera mounts. Retail price is $500 at www.kaliprotectives.com.

USED IT, ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: HARDLINE TREAD DOCTOR SNIPER KIT

The Tread Doctor is a heated tire cutting tool that can cut new edges on the face of knobs or be used as a grooving tool (with the Sniper kit).

VERDICT: This is five-star product for a backyard engineer who loves to fine tune his bike. For MXA’s tastes, grooving is a better alternative than vertical cutting. Grooves provides extra edges for acceleration and braking. The Sniper kit does a great job.

DIGITS: $79.99 (Tread Doctor with Sniper kit), $69.99 (Sniper kit only), $59.99 (Tread Doctor without Sniper kit), $14.99 (replacement cutting blade), $13.99 (12 pack of grooving blades)–www.hardlineproducts.com or (805) 581-4700.
