MXA’S WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: TRANS-AM OR TRANS-AMA? NICKY HAYDEN RIDE DAY & WHAT’S A RIEJU?

NICKY HAYDEN TRIBUTE 69-MILE GROUP CYCLING RIDE ON JUNE 9

FMF & Ryno Power are sponsoring a Nicky Hayden Day group cyclingride leave from Specialized Costa Mesa at 1901 Harbor Boulevard, Costa Mesa, California for a 69-mile bicycle ride on a planned route. Gift bags will be given out to the first 50 people in attendance. FMF encourages those who can’t attend the planned ride to still participate by doing their own ride (moto or pedal), walk (or run) of 6.9 miles and then tag them in a social post with #69MilesForNicky. SOLVING THE TRANS-AM, TRANS-AMA, INTER-AM, INTER-AMA AND TRANS-USA CONFUSION

The 1970 Inter-Am program—don’t say Inter-AMA.

There is a lot of historical confusion about the Inter-Am, Inter-AMA, Trans-Am, Trans-AMA and Trans-USA names. Let’s clear it up. It all started with a man named Edison Dye. Edison was not a motorcycle racer, but he was a serious fan of the sport who is widely considered to be the “Father of American Motocross.”

Edison Dye in Sweden at the Husqvarna factory with the bike he was importing to America.

While in Europe, Edison discovered motocross and the new breed of European motocross bikes that were unknown to American consumers. Dye decided that he would import these unusual two-stroke motocross bikes to America. He signed a deal with Husqvarna of Sweden to supply him with as many motorcycles as they could for the American market. The first time they gave him nine bikes.

Malcolm Smith, Torsten Hallman and Edison Dye.

Once Dye had convinced the Swedes to sell him bikes, he had to find some way to get American riders to buy them. Dye’s marketing plan would change the face of motorcycle racing in the United States. In 1966, Dye flew World Champion Torsten Hallman over to race a handful of select American races. Hallman won every one of them. The next year, 1967, Dye brought over Torsten Hallman, Arne Kring, Joel Robert, Roger DeCoster, Lars Larsson, Dave Bickers and Ake Johnson. The success of Edison Dye’s traveling circus convinced him that America needed a professional motocross series, which led Dye to form the Inter-Am (International-American) motocross series. The sport blew up. It went big overnight, not just selling thousands of tickets, but 10,000 Husqvarnas a year. That is where the name “Inter-Am” makes its appearance in motocross history.

Roger DeCoster won four of the nine Trans-AMA series (1974, 1975, 1976 and 1977).

The dirt track-oriented AMA had no interest in the sport of motocross, but once they saw the crowds that Dye’s Inter-Am series was drawing (and the commercial potential of the sport), they muscled into Dye’s territory, counterpromoted against him, and used their infamous heavy-handed tactics to take over what Dye had built. The AMA used its clout to wipe the “Inter-Am” off the circuit and replaced it with the “Inter-AMA.” And that is how the Inter-Am became the “Inter-AMA” The AMA did let Edison Dye promote Trans-AMA races under AMA sanction. And it was in this role that Edison Dye, the founding father of American motocross, became an outcast. As hard as it may be to believe, less than five years after introducing motocross to America, Edison Dye was banned from the sport.

What did Dye do? It rained at the 1974 St. Louis Trans-AMA. And Dye, who never really fit in with the motocross crowd with his impeccably styled three-piece suits, decided that if he held the Trans-AMA in the rain, he would lose a lot of money. But, if he canceled it on Sunday morning, he wouldn’t have to pay the AMA purse. Dye canceled the race. And, was never allowed to promote another event.

What the Pontiac Trans Am had to do with the Trans-AMA series is a mystery, but threats of lawsuits scared the AMA away. Photo: St. Louis Car Museum

But we are getting away from the Inter-Am, Inter-AMA, Trans-Am, Trans-AMA and Trans-USA discussion. Let’s recap. The “Inter-Am” was Edison Dye’s original motocross series. The “Inter-AMA” was what the 250cc “Inter-Am” series was called after the AMA took it over. The “Trans-AMA” was the AMA’s attempt to solidify their hold on the sport. The “Trans-AMA” was a winter 500cc series. There never was anything called the “Trans-Am.” But eventually, the Trans-Am sports car racing series and Pontiac, with its Trans Am car took offense to the name “Trans-AMA” and threatened to sue the AMA if they didn’t change it. The “Trans-AMA” series was changed to “Trans-USA” series for the last two years of its existence.

We don’t expect everyone to remember this history, but for the sake of clarity, just say Inter-Am when talkig about the first significant motocross races in America (not Inter-AMA) and never say Trans-Am.

It wasn’t until many years later that Edison Dye was honored as the “Founding Father of American Motocross,”  and the “Edison Dye Lifetime Achievement Award”  was named after him. It will nominate its 25th recipient later this year.

DECADE OF DUBYA | GET AN INSIDE PEAK

FIRST LOOK! 2022 KAWASAKI KX450 & KAWASAKI KX250

2022 KAWASAKI KX450

As the flagship model in the Kawasaki KX lineup, the 2022 Kawasaki KX450 is built with race-winning components to help get Kawasaki riders to the top step of the podium. Tuned to best suit race-experienced riders, the 449cc liquid-cooled, four-stroke engine boasts an abundance of power along with a slim aluminum perimeter frame, Showa A-KIT technology suspension, coned disc-spring hydraulic clutch, and electric start to deliver the ultimate championship-winning package.

High-performance 49mm Showa coil spring front forks with A-Kit technology can be found up front, featuring large diameter inner tubes that are the same size as those found on the machines of Kawasaki’s factory racing team. The forks enable the use of large damping pistons for smooth action and firm damping. In the rear, a new Uni-Trak linkage system is connected to the Showa Compact Design rear shock that boasts A-Kit technology with large diameter compression adjusters.

The sleek bodywork has been molded to match the V-mounted radiators and narrow chassis design, helping facilitate rider movement and making it easy to slide back and forth. The MSRP is $9499.

2022 KAWASAKI KX250

With a championship heritage that boasts 18 AMA professional titles and 193 race wins since 2004, the Kawasaki KX250 is the ideal platform for mid-level to expert riders and continues as the best performing bike on track. Its high revving engine, electric start, coned disc-spring hydraulic clutch, and slim aluminum perimeter frame provide the power and handling needed to deliver quicker lap times.

The 249cc liquid-cooled, four-stroke engine delivers significant low-mid range performance while boasting top-end revs and impressive peak power thanks to its development through Kawasaki’s factory racing efforts. Its electric start system, activated by the push of a button, makes starting easy and convenient and is powered by a lightweight, compact Li-ion battery. The valve train utilizes a finger-follower valve actuation to help achieve a high rev limit and allows for the use of more aggressive cam profiles. A diamond-like coating on the finger followers helps protect against wear. Large-diameter, lightweight titanium valves and a high-performance piston with a dry film lubricant coating contribute to strong performance at all rpm.

The KX250’s slim aluminum perimeter frame is based on its KX450 counterpart.  The MSRP is $8399.

MXA TECH SPEC: 10 THINGS ABOUT THE 2021 KAWASAKI KX450 AND, BY PROXY, THE 2022 KX450

(1) Handlebars. Oh, happy day! The 2021 KX450 finally comes with oversized Renthal 839-bend Fatbars instead of 7/8-inch bars. We didn’t really hate the 2020 Kawasaki’s 7/8th handlebars, but with all the switches, buttons, levers, grips and crossbar clamps, the bars were running out of room. The big bars aren’t an issue, but Kawasaki’s wimpy, marshmallow-like rubber bar-mount inserts are. They twist and deform in even the smallest crashes. We replace them.

(2) Forks. The 2021 KX450 Showa forks are too soft. There are three simple solutions for slow riders, Vet riders and Pros. First, Kawasaki’s stock spring rate is 5.0 N/mm. It works for lightweight riders, Vet Novices and tracks without big jumps. Second, Vet riders can run a stock 5.0 spring in the right fork leg and Kawasaki’s optional 5.2 spring in the left fork leg. Voila! By math magic, that adds up to a stiffer 5.1 N/mm spring. Third, Pro riders can opt for Kawasaki’s optional 5.2 N/mm fork springs in both fork legs. Short of sending your KX450 forks out for a re-valve, this is the simplest fix.

(3) Clutch. The 2021 KX450 clutch has a 7mm-larger (146mm) clutch basket, which translates into 7mm-larger clutch plates. The clutch’s fiber segments are applied at an angle to move oil between the fiber and steel plates. Kawasaki got rid of its horrid judder spring system and replaced it with a full-size eighth plate. And, finally, Kawasaki replaced the five individual coil-type clutch springs with a Belleville washer, a la KTM and Husqvarna. Unlike with five separate coil springs, the large-diameter Belleville washer applies pressure to the clutch pack evenly around its circumference. The 2021 clutch is a big improvement.

(4) Maps. Kawasaki doesn’t have a push-button map switch. Instead, it uses plug-in couplers. The green plug-in is the stock KX450 map, and it delivers the best all-around power. The black coupler mellows out the complete rev range and gives up 1 to 2 horsepower from 6000 rpm all the way to 11,500 rpm. The white plug-in is the aggressive coupler. It produces the exact same horsepower from bottom to top as the stock green coupler but delivers the power with a crisper feel (and a little less over-rev). Kawasaki does offer a $700 mapping tool, but unless you are running a race team, it’s simpler to send your black box to Twisted Development to put special maps in for you. Yes, you have to pay for the service, but it isn’t $700.

(5) Rear brake rotor. In 2019, Kawasaki’s engineers put a jumbo-sized 250mm rotor on the 2019 KX450. The big rotor lacks modulation. It is too grabby. There is no brake, and then there is too much brake. We ground the brake pad’s leading and trailing edges down at a 45-degree angle which downsized the pads to ease their interaction with the rotor. We are surprised that Kawasaki’s engineers didn’t spec the smaller 240mm rotor they put on the 2021 KX250 and KX450X.

(6) Rear brake pedal. The rear brake pedal can be adjusted upward but not downward. To cure this, we hacksawed three threads off the bottom of the threaded master cylinder rod to give the pedal more downward freeplay; that way, a boot can touch it without locking up the brakes by accident.

(7) Brittle plastic. Kawasaki specs very brittle plastic. Roost cracks the fork guards. This is not a rare event it’s common. The front number plate cracks down the center, and the elongated arms of the radiator wings crack vertically. Order aftermarket plastic (especially the fork guards), because it is more durable.

(8) Chain roller. The lower chain roller—the one under the frame that keeps the chain from whipping as it spins off the countershaft sprocket—self-destructs quickly. Considering Kawasaki’s longterm problems with its rear chain guide, you should order TM Designworks parts on day one.

(9) Overheating. We run a 2.0 kg/cm2 Twin Air Ice Flow radiator cap to keep the radiator from spewing fluid.

(10) Update. What would it take to turn a 2020 Kawasaki KX450 into a 2021 KX450? Two things. First, you would need oversized handlebars and oversized bar mounts. Second, you would need to order a complete Hinson or Rekluse clutch to upgrade the weak 2020 KX450 clutch to Pro standards. What would it take to turn a 2021 KX450 into a 2022 KX450? Nothing.
