• TONY CAIROLI DECIDES TO STAY IN AMERICA…FOR TWO MORE AMA 450 NATIONALS

Tony Cairoli struggles with his goggles.

Tony Cairoli, where he is most comfortable—at speed.

Although nine-time World Motocross Champion Tony Cairoli only agreed to race the first two 2022 AMA 450 Natioals (pala and Hangtown), he and the family are enjoying life the AMA pits and touring America. With the next two Nationals in Colorado and Pennsylvania, Tony has elected to stay a little bit longer (and get the chance to see a little more of the USA). Although Tony retired from the FIM World Motocoss Championship at the end of the 2021 season, he always wished that he had raced in America more than just the occasion USGP. So, when asked if he’d like to race the 2022 AMA National to help Team KTM replace the injured Cooper Webb and departed Marvin Musquin, Tony signed on and, as luck would have it, Ryan Dungey, who retired five years ago, also signed on to race a couple rounds (and has since decided to race all 12 rounds).

Who said “You can never go home again?” certainly not Ryan Dungey.

After five years off, Ryan is working his way back up to full speed.

Although the racing at the front of the 450 pack has been intense and both Tony and Ryan have mixed it up at the front of the pack, Sexton, Roczen, Tomac and Anderson have been the class of the field—but for the fans in the stands (when there are any), know that the appearance of two legendary racers has been the highlight of the season. KTM made the the 2022 AMA National special by bring the old warhorses back. Ryan and Tony are currently 6th and 7th in the 450 points standings, but number one when he comes to fan support. If you can get to Thunder Valley this Saturday or Mt. Morris on June 18, do it. Come and cheer on the once in a lifetime “Tony and Ryan Show.”

2023 KAWASAKI ELEKTRODE ELECTRIC BALANCE BIKE

From the brand behind the KX motocross powerhouse comes the all-new Elektrode™ electric balance bike. Little rippers can now start their journey on two wheels as early as three years old. Meaning, the path to the podium now starts earlier than ever. It’s an official welcome to world-class, high-performance, iconic Kawasaki vehicles when young riders get started on the Elektrode. Since engine noise and exhaust can often be intimidating to young children learning to ride, the Elektrode can help encourage those who might otherwise be nervous to see how much fun riding can be. Plus, with Lime Green paint, a number plate, and motocross-inspired graphics, riders will feel like their favorite Kawasaki Team Green race team idol.

The $1099 Elektrode is compact in size to allow for easy transportation in the back seat or trunk of a car, so riders can bring their favorite two-wheeler on camping trips, weekend getaways, or off-road excursions. Since it is designed and built in-house with young riders in mind, the Elektrode has the build quality and reliability that Kawasaki is known for and is ready to withstand years of fun. With the help of Kawasaki’s flagship electric balance bike, now the whole family can get in on the fun and help kick-start the process of getting little rippers on their first bike.

Charging the Elektrode’s battery is easy and convenient. The provided charging cable can be plugged into the front of the bike and connected to any home outlet, making the Elektrode easy to charge anywhere. When not at home, the battery can also easily be charged from a car, camper or side-by-side vehicle, meaning the fun can continue even while on the go.

Parent-controlled multiple speed modes allow riders to grow and adapt as their abilities increase. Three speed modes can be selected using the LCD screen located on the handlebars, making it quick and simple to switch between modes. Each mode caps the electric bike at a specific speed: low at 5mph, mid at 7.5mph, and high at 13mph. The power can also be turned off, transforming the Elektrode into a balance bike that is suited for any child at the beginning of their two-wheeled journey.

The 2023 Elektrode electric balance bike is the first of its kind for Kawasaki, leading the way with an air-cooled, brushless, in-wheel electric motor producing 250 watts of acceleration at the rear wheel. Power is delivered in a smooth, linear fashion and gets the Elektrode moving in a predictable way. Strategically located within the rear wheel, the motor contributes to the Elektrode’s low center of gravity for an ideal balance point that makes for a light steering feel and easy turning

MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: “PRO-BOOT MX” REMEDIAL BOOT REPAIR

Note the big tear in the toe box area of this brand-new boot.

Although you only think of Pro-Boot MX as a company that resoles well-used Motocross boots, they recently came upon a boot that had a bad luck story. Pro-Boot MX’s Randy Nagel got a brand-new Gaerne SG12 boot from a guy who ran his foot into something that split the metal toe cap in two and tore a hole through the side of the boot. Luckily, he didn’t get hurt. He sent the boot to Pro-Boot MX, not to have the brand-new soles replaced, but to see if they could do something about the big tear in the toe box.

After the repair, the boot is good to go.

Randy glued the inner padding back together, welded up the crack and color matched the area with a flexible bonding material. The Pro-Boot MX repair looked pretty good, especially for a new boot that looked like it’s effective lifespan was only one ride. Total cost including a new toe cap and the repair was under $50.00 (plus return shipping). So, if you have a run-in with a footpeg or your kickstarter gouges your boot, don’t throw it away, send it to www.pro-bootmx.com or call (507) 534-1247.

• MXA AD OF THE WEEK: BEFORE THE MEN WERE MEN

Yamaha won 24 classes at the 1981 World Mini Grand Prix. You might recognize the names Bobby Moore, Troy Blake, Ron Lechien, Todd Campbell and Mouse McCoy. As a side note, Ronnie Tichenor got second place in the 60cc Race of Champions behind Mouse McCoy. Troy Blake won the 80cc Race of Champion with Todd Campbell second.

MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: EZ-UP ENDEAVOR POP-UP AWNING

EZ-UP-AWNING-1

WHAT IS IT? Every motocross racer has experience with E-Z Up awnings (and E-Z Up has almost become the generic name for all pop-up awnings, regardless of their brand name—sort of like Kleenex with facial tissues). While the majority of motocross racers have had positive experiences with E-Z Ups protecting them from sun and rain, some have had awnings fly away in gusts of wind and have had to deal with legs that stick, engagement pins that won’t release and tops that fade. E-Z Up has heard all of the complaints and has responded with the E-Z Up Endeavor model. It is the beefed-up, rugged, he-man version of the instant shade business. Bigger, stronger and better.

E-Z Up offers eight standard colors (punch, limeade, black, royal blue, gray, orange, splash and white), plus 17 premium colors. For $839, you get a plain-wrap canopy, but E-Z Up’s art department can print logos, photos and custom designs on any color canopy. They even have a Fast Track program that expedites jobs in one day. There is a graphics specialist in-house at E-Z Up who can help you with your desired artwork needs. Obviously, the cost of custom artwork is extra and depends on your imagination (and wallet).

e-zup

The Endeavor model is only available in the 10×10-foot size (although E-Z Up offers sizes as large as 10×20 feet in other models). The Endeavor weighs 64 pounds, but thanks to its all-aluminum frame, it is lighter than most steel awnings by several pounds. The box-stock Endeavor comes with its own bag for storage, or you can order a wheeled roller bag to tote the awning with less effort. We also have a 10-foot sidewall to block the sun when it is at low angles early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

The Endeavor frame is incredibly well made. The octagon-shaped aluminum legs are 2 inches in diameter (compared to 1.25 inches on the typical aluminum-framed awning and 1 inch for a steel-framed awning). The Endeavor’s foot pads, base plate and end caps are upsized to correspond to the jumbo-sized octagon legs. The Endeavor is easy to raise and lower thanks to large pull pins at the top of the chassis and five-position toggle adjusters on the legs, which offer 15 inches of height adjustment. The strength of these critical components is significantly upgraded. Under the canopy there are several built-in hooks to hang accessories from.

The commercial-grade polyester canopy meets CPAI-84, NFPA-701 and CAN/ULC-S109 fire-resistant standards. This is important if you want to use your E-Z Up indoors as a display booth or for advertising.

DIGITS? $909.00 (10×10 feet); $149.00 (roller bag)—(800) 457-4233 or www.ezup.com.

MXA RATING: MXA has destroyed more pop-up awnings than we care to admit. They have blown away, been hit by bikes, ripped by accident and just plain worn out. We spend three to four days a week at the racetrack, so wear and tear are part of our life. That’s why we choose to relax between motos under the strongest instant shelter ever made.

MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: BLENDZALL #555 ULTRA TPI CASTOR INJECTOR OIL

Blendzall’s castor-based two-stroke oil is suitable for use in modern two-stroke engines utilizing an electronic fuel-injection system like KTM’s Transfer Port Injection (aka TPI). MOTO-PHOTO QUIZ ANSWER
: Andy Jefferson, the first black motocross racer to make a premier Supercross main event, is standing there without his shirt on. Andy raced the 250 class that day. Today, Andy is the media manager for KTM, Husqvarna and GasGas. Next to Andy is his long-time buddy and MXA guy Zapata Espinoza (with his trademark Mohawk haircut). Although Zap no longer sports the Mohawk he was famous back in 1982, he has been a valued addition to MXA, MOTOcross, Mountain Bike Action and today is the editor of Road Bike Action magazine. Next to Zap, to his left is Mitch Payton, who sponsored Andy Jefferson through Anaheim Husqvarna—which became Pro Circuit.
