MXA’S WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: WE ARE NOW IN THE STRETCH RUN OF THE NATIONALS & MXGP

• ONE OF STEVE MCQUEEN’s THREE HUSKY 400’S TO GO ON BLOCK AGAIN

This Steve McQueen Husqvarna 400 is being offered at “No Reserve” in Carmel, California, next Friday, August 19.

The Husky you see here was bought by the movie star in 1971 (through his film production company Solar Productions). This bike was original sold at auction in 1984. This not the “On Any Sunday” Husky, but one of three that Steve owned. All have seen the auction block and fetched prices as high as $204,000.

Steve’s original paperwork.

This particular Husky 400 was originally sold as lot 664 at the Steve McQueen Estate Auction at Imperial Palace on November 25, 1984, in Las Vegas, Nevada. It has passed through three subsequent owners before being acquired by the current owner 11 years ago. It’s been preserved in the same condition it was in when McQueen last rode it.

Like any good 1070s off-road racer, Steve McQueen taped a spare spark plug on the frame—it’s still there 51 year later.

It’s now going to roll across the auction block at Bonham’s Quail Auction on August 19 at the Quail Lodge & Golf Club in Carmel, California with a suggested price guide of $130,000 to $180,000. To see the Bonham’s Auction listing Click Here.

SHANE MCELRATH WILL RIDE FOR A THIRD TEAM THIS YEAR

Shane McElrath was signed for a four-race fill-in role at Husqvarna, but it lasted eight races, but all good things must come to an end. Luckily Shane has landed a good gig with the ClubMX Yamaha team for the rest of the Nationals.

Shane McElrath, who started the 2022 season on the Rocky Mountain KTM team before getting a fill-in ride at the Rockstar Husqvarna team after the Rocky Mountain KTM team suddenly folded, but now that Dean Wilson and Malcolm Stewart have healed from their injuries, Shane’s fill-in ride is over. As luck would have it, the Muc-Off/FXR/ClubMX Yamaha team has signed him on for the final four AMA 450 Nationals as a fill-in rider for the injured Phil Nicoletti. Shane in currently tenth in AMA 450 Nationals points.

2023 HONDA CRF450 “FIRST RIDE” VIDEO VIEWS BY MEDIA

Below are YouTube’s official number of viewers of MXA, Dirt Bike, SwapMoto, Vital and RacerX videos for the first 10 days since the release of the 2023 CRF450 videos.

• MXA FIRST RIDE VIDEO: 2023 HONDA CRF450 50TH ANNIVERSARY MODEL

• 2023 YAMAHA YZ450F UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

The plastic leans heavily on the style trends that came out last year on the YZ125 and YZ250 two-strokes.

The airbox cover is wider and has more surface area. It is held in place by a hook on the front and a Dzus faster through the seat flap.

The radiator wings are no longer used to guide air into the airbox, instead air is draw in through vents behind the side panels and gets to the filter by coming under the seat.

The new 2023 YZ450F handlebar pad is molded from rubber and doesn’t have a Velcro on pad cover.

The YZ450F map switch is very basic compared to Honda’s.

The Yamaha Power Tuner now uses a sliding bar to make tuning easier. It offers more features than last year—including an adjustable Launch Control rpm limiter abd a built-in lap timers. All accessd on your smart phone.

The 2023 YZ450F engine has been down-sized and features new port shapes, larger intake valves and 500 rpm more rev on top.

Behind the decorated clutch cover is a clutch that bares a very close resemblance to a KTM clutch, save for the cable actuation. It has a Belleville washer spring, steel clutch basket and the primary gear is machined into the back of the basket.

The chain guide has a lighter and sleeker look with triangular-shaped holes instead of last year’s smaller rounded holes.

The Kayaba SSS forks have new valving and hand-operated clickers for compression adjustments.

Responding to consumer complaints, that have been loud and clear since 2010, the 2023 YZ450F is narrower, sleeker and, since the radiator wings don’t direct air to the airbox, they don’t stick out like before.

The 2023 Yamaha YZ450F’s retail price went up $300 over last year’s YZ-F to $9899, but the weight went down a claimed 5 pounds.

• MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: WORKS CONNECTION ELITE KTM/HUSQVARNA ELITE AXLE BLOCK KIT

Works Connection’s Elite Axle Block Kit converts your stock KTM / Husqvarna rear axle from a fixed design into a floating type. Our kit retains your stock axle and aluminum axle nut so your ‘leaner’ triangle can still be used. KTM and Husqvarna down sized their rear axles from 25mm to 22mm for the 2023 models, so Works Connection went back to the drawing board and designed an all-new kit. KTM’s and Husqvarna’s Factory race teams use this same floating type design on their race team bikes to improve traction as well as straight line stability and now those same benefits are available from this kit.

Works Connection’s ‘kit’ consists of a pair of CNC-macgined Elite Axle Blocks, a machined Titanium drive-side receiver and a square removal tool nut.
The key component is the integrated receiver post on each axle block that allows the use of calipers to precisely measure and match the left and right axle block’s position. This ensures exact alignment of the chain and sprocket so critical to prolonging chain and sprocket life. The retail price of the Elite Axle Block Kit in $99.95 in blue, red, black, orange and silver. It is designed and manufactured in the USA.  • TENTATIVE 2022 RACE SCHEDULES

The 2022 World Vet Motocross Championship is shaping up to be a barn burner, as lots of former motocross stars from different decades are lining up to win the Over-30, Over-40, Over-50, Over-60 and Over-70 titles. Believe it or not, multi-time AMA 250 National Champion Gary Jones is now 70-years-old. He is he only rider to have won World Vet crowns in the Over-30, Over-40, Over-50 and Over-60 classes. If he can win the Over-70 title in 2022, he will have a Grand Slam of most of the important age groups. But Gary won’t be perfect because 1970s GP star Lars Larsson is the reigning Over-80 World Vet Champion and Gary Jones has to wait ten years before he’s old enough to get the clean sweep he wants.
