“BENNETT’S WAR” TO BE RELEASED ON DIGITAL ON NOV. 12

For those that missed it in the theaters, the motocross-based Hollywood movie will be available for home viewing. Mainstream Hollywood movies with motocross as their theme are few and far between. “Bennett’s War” is the story of a young soldier, Marshall Bennett (Michael Roark), who is medically discharged from the Army after an IED explosion. After coming home to the family farm, he discovers that his dad (Trace Adkins) is behind on the mortgage and may lose the farm. Marshall Bennett vows to help his family by the returning to the sport he loves to save the farm. Against the wishes of his wife (Allison Paige) he goes into training to rehab his injured leg so he can try to earn as much money as possible by racing again.

This is a classic Hollywood movie, with a plot line that is boy loves motocross, boys loses motocross (and almost his leg and the farm), boy wins farm (and wife) back by racing motocross (with the big showdown at the Glen Helen National against the bad guys).

Country Western music star and Wounded Warrior supporter Trace Adkins plays the gravel-voiced dad.

The film stars Trace Adkins as the father, Michael Roark (“Magic Mike,” “Beauty and the Beast”) as Marshall Bennett, Allison Paige (“The Flash”) as Marshall’s wife, Ali Afshar, (“American Wrestler: The Wizard,” “Born to Race”) as Marshall’s friend and mentor and features a standout performance by REM’s Pasha Afshar as the bad guy.

This inspirational family and sports drama features racing footage from the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship and is produced by Forrest Lucas—who also sponsors the AMA Nationals through Lucas Oils and owns MAV-TV. “Bennett’s War” will be available in high definition and standard definition from Amazon, FandangoNOW, iTunes, PlayStation, Vudu, Xbox and others. The DVD and Blu-ray will go on sale for $28.98 on December 3, 2019. Plus, it will appear digitally on Video On Demand services from cable, satellite providers, and select gaming consoles.

MXA COVER OF THE WEEK: DO YOU REMEMBER RICH EIERSTEDT? PAT RICHTER? OR THE MK10?

The MXA wrecking crew is especially fond of the June 1977 cover, because it shows Team Honda, Maico, Bultaco, Can-Am, Harley-Davidson and MXA test rider Rich Eierstedt scrubbing a 1977 Bultaco 250 MK10 at Saddeback Park. Also in his issue is an interview with Pat Richter. Richter was a hot property on the AMA National circuit back in 1977, but is best known today as Ryan Villopoto’s uncle. The cover photo was shot by Jody Weisel.

HUSQVARNA VITPILEN 701 AERO CONCEPT WINS INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION

Husqvarna has not announced whether the Vitpilen 701 Aero  concept will ever see production. Vitpilen translates into “White Arrow.”

Husqvarna’s Vitpilen 701 Aero concept bike won the motorcycle category in the “Best of Best Automotive Brand Contest.” This is an an independent, international, German Design Council competition that honors outstanding product design in the Automotive/Motorcycle/Bicycle industry. The Vitpilen was initially unveiled at 2018 Milan Motorcycle show (EICMA).

The Aero Concept is reminiscent of the “Cafe Racer” bikes of the  late 1970s.

The Vitpilen 701 Aero concept is a faired sport bike that features a low locked-in riding position that harks back to the cafe racer era of street bikes. It is both retro and modern. The engine is 692.7cc, liquid cooled, fuel-injected, 105mm x 80mm bore-and-stroke, single-cylinder four-stroke.

100 PERCENT TARIFF ON EUROPEAN MOTORCYCLES & PARTS DROPPED

This KTM would have cost $19,998 if the tariff had been enacted,

Proposed tariffs of up to 100 percent on motorcycles, parts, and accessories, coming in from European Union countries, have been staved off – after the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) and member manufacturers testified before, and submitted written comments to, the Office of the United States Trade Representativ (USTR). The proposed tariffs, that would have greatly affected the motorcycle business, weres part of a dispute regarding certain EU countries subsidizing their large-aircraft manufacturing sector.

Representatives from  KTM, Indian Motorcycles and the MIC testified at USTR hearings in Washington, D.C., and made the case against the proposed tariffs. Additionally Cobra, Ducati, Indian Motorcycle and KTM submitted written comments to the USTR opposing the tariffs. In a show of transcontinental industry support, the European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturer (ACEM) also submitted written arguments against the proposed tariffs.

“We have been actively engaged in this dispute from day one, both in Washington, D.C., and in Europe, to protect American motorcycle dealers, support the motorcycle industry and allow our customers to continue to ride and experience motorcycling,” said John Hinz, CEO of KTM North America. “Our brands and dealers have been operating in the United States for over 50 years and it is our responsibility to protect and grow the future of motorcycling.”

Had the tariffs been enacted, it would have meant extremely high prices for American consumers of European motorcycles, parts, and accessories. The increased costs would have discouraged motorcycle riders from buying new bikes or even from performing routine but critical maintenance, such as brake pad and tire replacements, due to the potential doubling on the price of parts.

MXA TEAM TESTED: SLIPSHOT HYDRAULIC HOLESHOT DEVICE

The Slipshot is an AMA-legal holeshot device that is allowed in the stock class. It has nothing to do with suspension and everything to do with clutch control. Its goal is to guarantee repeatability each and every time you drop the clutch off the starting line. The Slipshot’s hydraulic mechanism operates off the clutch arm on the engine cases. Its small, lightweight hydraulic cylinder is cable-operated from the clutch lever. How fast the clutch is released can be adjusted via a dial on the back of the cylinder. More tension releases the clutch slower; less tension releases it faster. It allows hydraulics to release the clutch at whatever speed you prefer—without you doing anything.

The Slipshot device gives you a consistent launch off the gate. All you have to do is dump the clutch lever and the Slipshot handles the speed with which the clutch is released. You can set it so that the clutch releases slowly so you don’t get wheelspin on concrete. Or, you can set it to release the clutch quickly to blast out of loamy starting spots. Once the clutch is fully released, the Slipshot will lock in place and your clutch will operate normally for the rest of the race.

To operate the Slipshot, pull in the clutch and activate the Slipshot traction trigger lever. Shift your bike into gear and, when ready, let the clutch lever go. You don’t have to worry about slipping the clutch—just let go of the lever. Since you don’t have to worry about the clutch, you can focus on your reaction time, body position and legs. Be sure to take the time to test all of the adjustments to find the perfect release time for your bike. The hardest part will be retraining your mind to dump the clutch like you are a 9-year-old on a 65cc again. It takes time to hand over control after years of slipping the clutch manually.

Beware! The Slipshot automatically slips the clutch for 40 to 60 feet, and, if you pull the clutch in manually before the clutch arm is fully released, it will start the process over again and bog your bike down in the middle of the straightaway. Not good.

DIGITS.  $500.00 — (985) 966-3163.

MXA RATING: All of MXA’s test riders liked it on concrete, and some liked it on dirt. The Slipshot is
a unique device, and for the right rider, it could result in holeshots. But for some, it could result in frustration.
