• MXA AD OF THE WEEK: THE 1988 CAGIVA WMX 250
The 1988 Cagiva WMX 250 was designed by Dutch motorcycle designer Jan Witteveen. Witteveen had been at Gilera, Sach and Siminini before moving to Cagiva. It was raced by Pekka Vehkonnen and Gert Jan Van Doorn. Vehkonnen finished second in the 1988 250 World Championship behind Jon van den Berk and ahead of Rodney Smith. However, Cagiva had purchased the Husqvarna brand from its Swedish Electrolux owners during thsi time frame and moved the Swedish brand to Italy, where they eventually rebadged the Cagivas as Husqvarnas.

• TONY CAIROLI WILL SIT OUT THE REST OF THE NATIONALS TO GET READY FOR THE MXDN
Nine-time world champion, Tony Cairoli, was back in the USA to race the Budds Creek National this weekend, but he crashed early in moto one and hurt his wrist. He got up and finished the moto, but was 19th. But, you gotta give Tony credit, he showed up for the second moto and soldiered on to a 15th place finish. Tony said, “The idea was to come here to make some more gate drops before the Motocross desf Nations. I always like this track and after 15 years I want to come back. I just wanted to keep riding because I came all the way here to train at least a little bit. In the second moto, I put some ice on it and I hoped that it would be a little better but unfortunately it wasn’t good. I just rode at 50% of the possibilities and I didn’t want to crash and risk it. Uunfortunately, I have a little crack on my hand and I just need a couple of days of rest and let’s try to regroup and be ready for Motocross of Nations, which will be our next race and our biggest of the year.”
• JUSTIN BARCIA WAS DISQUALIFIED AT BUDDS CREEK, BUT WAS IT A KNEE JERK REACTION?
The official results from the Budds Creek 450 National show that GasGas factory rider Justin Barcia went 6-36, but according to MX Sports Justin was disqualified for taking out Dylan Ferrandis on the sixth lap of the second 450 moto. Barcia has been on double-secret probation in Supercross ever since a series of take-out moves, some his fault and some not, during the 2022 AMA Supercross series. But that probation is not in effect in the National outdoor series. After a GoPro video surfaced on Monday, the officials have held off on making an official statement. They may have jumped the gun on the disqualification (and certainly Dylan Ferrandis’s post-race statements about the incident seem to be wholly inaccurate). MX Sports may stick to their guns if additional evidence surfaces, but if not …who knows.
• STAR YAMAHA’S SURPRISE 250 NATIONAL FILL-IN RIDER WILL GET TO STAY FOR IRONMAN & PALA
When Star Yamaha announced that Guillem Farres would be the fill-in riders for injured Nick Romano for Round 10 of AMA National Motocross Championship at Budds Creek this past Saturday, everyone in the USA said, “Who?” The young Spaniard has scored three top 10 finishes in the FIM 250 World Motocross Championship. He will also compete in the 2022 Motocross des Nations at Red Bud for Team Spain in the 250 class. Farres is filling in for Nick Romano, who was injured while preparing for the Budds Creek and will not be back this series. Star Yamaha us well known for bringing young riders up to the team—often fielding as many as 6 riders at a given race, so Guillem Farres’s home address may be out of their wheelhouse, but he fits the kind of opportunities that Star Yamaha offers young riders.
Although unknown in America, where the fans care little about the FIM World Championships, which is not helped by the management of the MXGP by the Luongo family, and the fact that there were only 24 riders in the 250 class at the French GP this weekend (and only 18 in the race), while Farres had to qualify against 80 AMA 250 riders to make the cut at Budds Creek. Guillem was 10th fastest with a 2:00 lap times (Jett Lawrence’s fast time was 1:56.8). Farres ended the day at Budds Creek with a 6-13 for overall, while Star Yamahaa teammates Justin Cooper was fifth and Nate Tharsher was sixth. His top ten performance earned him spot on the Star Yamaha team for Crawfordsville and Pala.

• MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: WORKS CONNECTION ELITE KTM/HUSQVARNA ELITE AXLE BLOCK KIT
Works Connection’s Elite Axle Block Kit converts your stock KTM / Husqvarna rear axle from a fixed design into a floating type. Our kit retains your stock axle and aluminum axle nut so your ‘leaner’ triangle can still be used. KTM and Husqvarna down sized their rear axles from 25mm to 22mm for the 2023 models, so Works Connection went back to the drawing board and designed an all-new kit. KTM’s and Husqvarna’s Factory race teams use this same floating type design on their race team bikes to improve traction as well as straight line stability and now those same benefits are available from this kit.
Works Connection’s ‘kit’ consists of a pair of CNC-macgined Elite Axle Blocks, a machined Titanium drive-side receiver and a square removal tool nut.
The key component is the integrated receiver post on each axle block that allows the use of calipers to precisely measure and match the left and right axle block’s position. This ensures exact alignment of the chain and sprocket so critical to prolonging chain and sprocket life. The retail price of the Elite Axle Block Kit in $99.95 in blue, red, black, orange and silver. It is designed and manufactured in the USA.
