2020 SALT LAKE CITY SUPERCROSS ROUND 14 PRE-RACE REPORT: 250 WEST RIDERS ARE BACK

Can you believe we’re already going racing again? With only two days off in between, the 450SX riders are set to go again at the 2020 Salt Lake City Supercross this time for Round 14 of the 2020 Supercross season. Cooper Webb and Eli Tomac ran away with the 450 Main Event at Round 13, but with sunny skies on the forecast, we expect another good race track, more like what we saw at Round 12 one week ago. Watching Cooper and Eli go back and forth while lapping through the pack was exciting, but we’re looking forward to seeing more riders getting up there and challenging them at Round 14. 

It’s a short turnaround for the premier 450SX class riders, but this time we have a new group of faces lining up in the 250 class. Chase Sexton, Shane McElrath and the rest of the 250 East riders have a 10-day break before they come back to racing on June 17th. This Wednesday, June 10th, the 250 West Coast riders are coming back to racing after a long 4-month break and they have a healthy gate of riders which includes 11 factory 250 competitors and 2 more Honda supported “satellite” riders. You know what that means? It’s guaranteed that at least one factory rider (if not more) will finish outside of the top ten.

KEN ROCZEN ISN’T DONE YET

Ken Roczen has struggled at the last two rounds, but he isn’t done yet. 

Even if you’re a die-hard Cooper Webb or Eli Tomac fan, nobody enjoys seeing a top-tier rider like Ken Roczen struggling to compete at his fullest ability. True fans want to see a battle that goes down to the final lap of the final race. Even Cooper and Eli don’t want to see it end with Roczen struggling. If Eli wins the Championship with Ken Roczen having issues, it takes away from Eli’s win. Some people will even put an asterisk on his title saying “Well Roczen was having health issues.”

Supercross desperately needs Ken Roczen and more riders like him. Ken has dedicated his life to the sport and not only is he incredibly smooth and entertaining to watch on the track, but he goes the extra mile and is open and honest on social media. Racing is much better to watch when you feel like you know the riders on the track and Ken is generous enough to give us insight to his life via instagram. Unfortunately, Ken has struggled in the Main Event at the last two races, but he hasn’t given up yet. Roczen posted via instagram on Wednesday June 10th, the morning of the race:“Let’s see if we have made some improvements in this short amount of time. Giving up is for losers! I will always come back and try again.”

250 WEST IS BACK: FERRANDIS, COOPER, FORKNER, MOSIMAN, MCADOO, CRAIG, LAWRENCE BROTHERS & MORE

Defending 250 West Champion, Dylan Ferrandis comes into the final three rounds of the 250 West Coast series with a 7-point lead over his teammate Justin Cooper.

The 250 West division is stacked with top contenders, Dylan Ferrandis, Justin Cooper, Austin Forkner, Cameron McAdoo, Michael Mosiman, Alex Martin, Christian Craig, Jett Lawrence, Hunter Lawrence, Brandon Hartranft and Derek Drake are all factory 250 riders. Mitchell Oldenburg and Luke Clout could also fit into this category being that they ride for the Penrite Honda team, a factory supported team in Australia, and they’re both already inside the top ten in the point standings. The only rider who is missing on the 250 West roster is AJE Husqvarna rider, Jacob Hayes. Jacob sits sixth in points coming into Round 14, but he is on the sidelines after a practice crash one month ago left him with a compounded femur, two broken knee caps and a small wrist fracture. 

The 250 West riders will compete at Round 14 on Wednesday and Round 15 on Sunday. The 250 East riders will return for the penultimate Round 16 on Wednesday June 17th. Then, the two divisions will meet for the 250 East/West Shootout at the Supercross season finale on Sunday, June 21st.

Michael Mosiman finished fourth at the San Diego Supercross and scored his fourth top-five finish of the 250 West season. 

LAWRENCE BROTHERS RETURN 

Remember when 250 rookie Jett Lawrence led the Anaheim 2 Main Event for almost the entire race before he crashed on the final lap? He’s healthy again and ready to race in SLC.

Jett’s older brother Hunter Lawrence (#35) is making his long awaited Supercross debut on Wednesday in SLC.
