SHOULD EZRA LUSK BE BANNED?

Should Ezra Lusk be banned? That question was raised after Lusk was knocked unconscious at the ’99 Daytona Supercross. Lusk was out cold for one minute??.When you add in the fact that Ezra also rang his bell the week before at Dallas (even though he denies it), is it possible that Team Honda, the AMA and Pace are unknowingly allowing Lusk to endanger other riders and himself? Based on current medical knowledge, the answer is yes.
Why should Ezra be forced to sit out a few races? Three reasons: (1) Ezra Lusk has a history of suffering concussions. (2) With each incident he becomes more prone to suffering another one. (3) Each subsequent concussion increases his risk of permanent brain damage (what boxers call being punch drunk).

THE COLD HARD FACTS
Brain injuries account for more deaths than any other sports injury. The brain is made up of soft, delicate tissues encased in a rigid skull. On the outside of the brain is the dura, a tough, leathery casing, and on the inside are the cranial nerves. The nerves are responsible for sending and receiving messages, as well as normal brain functions such as facial movements, hearing and speech. The brain is cushioned by blood and spinal fluid, but there is very little extra room within the skull.

WHAT IS A CONCUSSION?
A concussion is a brain injury caused by a severe blow to the head (or even sudden movement) that produces a loss of normal brain function. The brain is literally shaken and smacked against the skull. The force of the blow may cause tearing or twisting of the tissues and blood vessels and the brain may swell, bruise or bleed. Concussions range in severity from temporary impairment to life-threatening damage. While people talk of minor concussions, most experts now believe that there is really no such thing as a minor concussion.

IS THERE A MAGIC NUMBER OF TOO MANY CONCUSSIONS?
There is a prevailing myth that the brain can tolerate a large number of concussions before there is permanent brain damage. This is not true. For some people, as few as two serious concussions may be too many. However, there are professional football and hockey players who have had nine or more and are still playing.

HOW DOES FREQUENCY COUNT?
How close together and how severe the concussions are is more important than how many you’ve had. Once you’ve had one concussion, the possibility of getting another one is much higher. Also, they have a cumulative effect, meaning the more concussions you suffer, the more likely it is that you will have permanent brain damage.
Having a second concussion on top of one that has not completely healed is called Second Impact Syndrome (SIS). Even a relatively minor blow to an already concussed head can cause rapid brain swelling and bleeding, which can quickly lead to coma and death.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE A CONCUSSION?
If you think that blacking out is the one true test of a concussion you are wrong. Not everyone who has a concussion passes out. In fact, most concussions don’t cause a lack of consciousness. The most basic signs of a concussion include: (1) headaches, (2) dizziness, (3) lack of awareness of surroundings, (4) loss of memory, (5) nausea, (6) vomiting, (7) mood changes and (8) drowsiness.
