According to Spain’s Commercial Court of Girona the bankruptcy hearing of Gas Gas has been resolved by the Torrot Group acquiring ownership of the brand. Other offers were tendered by Sherco and investment fund IRG.

The Barcelona-based Torrot Group, which makes electric bicycles, trial bikes and kid’s minis, will get Gas Gas back to full production for next year. This has been made somewhat easier by the fact that Gas Gas has kept a small workforce at the Girona Factory during the court hearings. They have kept the parts department operating.

Although unknown in the American market, company founder Don Luis Iriondo began producing bicycles and mopeds in the late 1940s. The company also made motorcycles in partnership with the French brand Terrot (from which the Spanish branch originally got the name Terrot). In 1958 Peugeot bought Terrot Motorcycles, but closed it two years later. In order to rebuild his business Don Luis Iriondo changed the brand’s spelling from “Terrot” to “Torrot” and carved out a niche in mopeds and bicycles. The Gas Gas purchase is a chance for Torrot to become a player in the world of offroad motorcycles. Torrot plans to spend $14 million refloating the company (in addition to the purchase price and $8 million dollars in debt repayment).
