MOTOCROSS ACTION’S MID-WEEK REPORT BY JOHN BASHER (3/6/13)

PHOTO OF THE WEEK     Geico Honda’s Wil Hahn turned Pro in 2007, and in the course of those years he bounced around to several teams. Injuries plagued the amiable Kansas native and younger brother to Tommy Hahn, but he always had the talent to run up front. It all came together for Wil in Atlanta, where he won his first ever 250 Supercross race. Hahn backed it up with another win, this time in St. Louis. For his efforts and consistency Wil leads the 250 East point standings. It couldn?t h…

ST. LOUIS SUPERCROSS: THE RYANS GO ONE-TWO, ONLY THIS WEEK IT’S A DIFFERENT RYAN THAN LAST WEEK: STEWIE NOW TWO FULL RACES ADRIFT

Malcolm Stewart’s luck in the 250 East is about as bad as his brothers is in the 450 class. He has speed and determination, but can’t stay off the ground. Photo: Hoppenworld Ryan Villopoto won his fifth race of the season in the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis in front of 59,742 fans. Meanwhile in the 250 East class, Geico Honda’s Justin Barcia won his third consecutive event to remain perfect (in what will be his final year as a 250 Supercross class rider?Barcia has to move to the 450 class in 2013). 45…

MOTOCROSS ACTION’S MID-WEEK REPORT (02/29/12)

By John Basher   PHOTOS OF THE WEEK     Kevin Windham turned 34-years-old yesterday, and this came a few days after he raced his 200th Supercross. Always a true showman, K-Dub is the Master of Opening Ceremonies. If you haven?t seen his 100′ plus transfers in sheer darkness and his stoppies during the opening ceremonies then you?re missing out. Congrats to Windham on 200! Photos courtesy of Geico/Honda. MINI-VIEW: COLE SEELY     Troy Lee Designs/Honda rider Cole Seely,…

MXA’S LAST WEEK IN REVIEW: WHAT YOU MISSED LAST WEEK IF YOU WERE IN QUANTANAMO

HISTORY AS IT HAPPENS! PHOTO MOMENTOS OF KTM’s BIG NIGHT Ryan Dungey spanning the gap on his way to KTM’s first-ever Supercross victory. They said it couldn’t be done? Who said that? Well, Roger DeCoster for one (when he was at Honda and Suzuki). The slippery Phoenix dirt required maximum throttle control?that’s where Ryan is the best. “Pop, pop, fizz, fizz! Oh what a relief it is!” There were a lot of naysayers when Ryan Dungey passed up Joe Gibbs and Team Honda for KTM?but none now. The first man to m…

MOTOCROSS ACTION’S MID-WEEK REPORT: (01/15/12)

MXA INTERVIEW: COLE SEELY How to win? “McDonalds drive-throughs and a lot of couch time.” Before getting his Troy Lee Designs gig (and an exclusive contract to ride the bikes), Cole Seely was known to don an orange helmet and throw down some crazy whips for MXA’s cameras. The MXA gang likes to see Cole do well at the races, and you can’t get a better start to the season than getting the “W” and maximum points at the first round. We called Cole to get his perspective on how he did it. MXA: Can you give u…

ANAHEIM 1 RESULTS: VILLOPOTO & SEELY ARE FLAWLESS-EVERYONE ELSE? NOT SO MUCH

Ryan Dungey ended all the questions about his switch to KTM with a podium position at A1. Photo: Hoppenworld Ryan Villopoto won Anaheim 1 in front of 45,050 fans and 19 dejected chasers. ?Villopoto made us look silly out here tonight,? said Chad Reed. ?I am just happy to get second place tonight in this field of riders.? Ryan Dungey finished third, but it was not without drama. Dungey crashed early in the race while running third behind Villopoto and Reed. James Stewart passed Dungey, Ryan fought back a…

MOTOCROSS ACTION’S MID-WEEK REPORT By John Basher PHOTO OF THE WEEK       The rider numbers will have changed, but the story line remains – the Nationals are almost here! Hangtown is the beginning of the AMA outdoor series, which means that motocross (also known as real racing) is only ten days away. The slate has been wiped clean. Let the games begin!   THE LATEST ON CHAD REED & HIS (POSSIBLE) OUTDOOR ADVENTURE     I?m friendly with TwoTwo Motorsports? Dave O…

THE NEW MXA IS HERE! WHAT YOUR’E MISSING IF YOU DON’T READ THE MAY 2011 ISSUE

Yep, that’s Kevin Windham’s CRF450 on the cover of the May issue of MXA. Kevin wanted us to test it and we wanted to test it?the rest was easy thanks to Geico Honda crew chief Kristian Kibby. Testing works bikes is always interesting, because as much as we like the bikes of superstars, sometimes they are unridable by mere mortals. Not so with K-Dub’s CRF450. He made some good choices. The MXA wrecking crew is immensely interested in how things work. When Yamaha came out with its infamous ice cream cone …

JOHN BASHER’S ANAHEIM 2 SUPERCROSS PHOTO GALLERY – THE SERIES TURNED ON A DIME

Click on the image above to view our Anaheim 2 Supercross photo gallery.     Now that five rounds of the 2011 Monster Energy Supercross series are in the books, the season has turned into a runaway between James Stewart and Ryan Villopoto for the 450 title. As Ryan Dungey can attest to, the points can turn on a dime. Dungey suffered a DNF at Anaheim 2 due to a derailed chain. It’s going to be an uphill battle for the defending champ.     In the 250 class Josh Hansen suffere…

LOS ANGELES SUPERCROSS PHOTO GALLERY: 18 OF JOHN BASHER’S BEST

Click on the image above to view our Los Angeles Supercross photo gallery.     Saturday night will forever be remembered as the first time that a Supercross race was held inside the famous Los Angeles Dodger Stadium. Historic as the stadium is, the night will more than likely be referred to as the first exciting race of the 2011 season. Cole Seely earned his first 250 West main event win, while the 450 class was filled with drama and crashes. In the end Ryan Villopoto became the first 450…

MOTOCROSS ACTION’S MID-WEEK REPORT: (01/20/11)

MOTOCROSS ACTION’S MID-WEEK REPORT By John Basher PHOTO(S) OF THE WEEK: PART 1     250 West privateer Damon Smith found himself in a precarious position during one of the daytime qualifying sessions in Phoenix. Smith, from Folsom, California, managed to get unhooked from his bike and walked away. It was a scary moment and it took orchestrating between Monster Energy Supercross officials to untangle him. To continue with our crash photo trend, it’s only fair to show a photo of Smith in glo…

MOTOCROSS ACTION MID-WEEK REPORT: (06/23/10)

By John Basher PHOTO OF THE WEEK     Eli Tomac hasn?t won a moto since taking the world by surprise at Hangtown. So what. The kid is a rookie. Why some people are dogging him for not setting the world on fire since the first National is beyond me. Tomac is a champion in the making. By the end of the series he will win again. My money is on Southwick. MINI-VIEW: ANDREW SHORT Short nailed two great starts at Budds Creek. He pulled away in the first moto, but ran out of steam in the second. …

MOTOCROSS ACTION PHOTO OF THE DAY: THURSDAY (06/15/10)

Former MXA test rider Cole Seely is now part of the Lucas Oil/Troy Lee Designs team, but he used to help test many of our production bikes. As you can see, Cole is blessed with unbelievable talent on a motorcycle. Here, he turns MXA’s KTM 250SXF into a pancake. Rider: Cole Seely Location: Glen Helen, California Photographer: John Basher

GLEN HELEN PRACTICE DAY PHOTOS:

Ryan Dungey was flying at Glen Helen. He’s aiming for his fourth championship in as many tries. Kyle Cunningham had a great race on the Valli Motorsports YZ450F at Las Vegas. He was out at Glen Helen putting the Valli Motorsports YZ450F through its paces. He looked very good. Usually back in Georgia, it was nice to see Martin Davalos spinning laps out west. Here, he flies over the massive soon-to-be USGP finish line jump. Jessica Patterson switched brands during the off-season. She’s aiming to take back…
