REM GLEN HELEN MOTOCROSS RACE REPORT: BRIAN SJOGREN, DON GRAHN & A PACK OF FOREIGN RIDERS INVADE GLEN HELEN

Rickard Hansson is enveloped in a cocoon of roost on his way to third overall in the 450 Pro class. What do the names Marko Vihria, Pekka Karjalainen, Perttu Sihvola, Maxime Godin, Lorenzo Brogi, Toni Konttinen and Elia Zinetti have in common? Other than their rarity in an American phone book, they all flew from Europe for a chance to race motocross in the USA…and were at Glen Helen to race this week’s REM event. They weren?t the only foreign riders at REM?just the ones with the hardest to pronounce n…

REM GLEN HELEN MOTOCROSS RACE REPORT: VANCE & HINES’ PRESTON TILFORD WINS 450 PRO CLASS; THE OVER-50 EXPERT RACE IS OFF THE CHART AGAIN

Bad starts made Preston Tilford work a lot harder than he should have in the 450 Pro class. In the end, he ran everyone down. The 450 Pro class had a lot of drama at this week’s REM motocross at Glen Helen Raceway. (1) Vance & Hines rider Preston Tilford won both motos, but if you were watching the race at the halfway point of each moto, you would never have thought that he was going to take the victory. Because Glen Helen is building a new starting gate on the REM track (and the cement was still cu…

REM GLEN HELEN MOTOCROSS RACE REPORT: SWEDE WINS 450 PRO CLASS, TWO-STROKES WIN 250 PRO, OVER-40 PRO & OVER-40 INTERMEDIATE

On his 20th birthday Swedish rider Rickard Hansson took the 450 Pro Victory at Glen Helen. Rickard is the son of former Grand Prix racer Peter Hansson. If you are an aspiring Swedish motocross racer, and the son of former factory rider and World Enduro Champion, you hate the Swedish winters. In Stockhom it is bitterly cold and the ground is piled heavy with snow. The solution? Fly to sunny SoCal and race in warm 80 degree weather. And so, Rickard Hansson, son of Peter Hansson and grandson of Hans Hansso…

REM GLEN HELEN MOTOCROSS RACE REPORT: JUSTIN SOULE AND PRESTON TILFORD WIN THE PRO CLASSES, WHILE THE OVER-50 EXPERT CLASSES SEES ANOTHER NEW WINNER

Vance & Hines rider Preston Tilford had a tough day with crashes and bad starts, but managed to pull the 250 Pro class victory out of a hat by never giving up. With the 2011 Glen Helen motocross season only three races old, REM took the time to put the final touches on the 2010 racing year with its annual awards. REM handed out embroidered jackets to the top ten racers from last year and gave special award to riders who deserved special merit. With 40 races every year, making the top ten isn’t as ea…

REM GLEN HELEN MOTOCROSS RACE REPORT: MAX ANSTIE, DAVE EROPKIN, DAN ALAMANGOS & ALAN OLSON HAVE A FIELD DAY

Max Anstie, who will be racing the 250 GP’s for the Pro Circuit-backed CLS team in 2011, is back in the USA preparing for the GP season. It was a week of happenings at this week’s REM motocross races at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California. First, starting next week, REM racers will not have to pay the $20 practice fee on Saturday (as long as they have an REM license card). Glen Helen will only charge REM racers $10 to get in the gate on Saturday’s race days. When you do the math, the $35 RE…

CONGRATS! 2010 REM GLEN HELEN TOP TEN IN POINTS IS ANNOUNCED

Dennis Boulware becomes the first four-time Champion in REM’s 25 year history. Even with over ten tracks within a two-hour drive in SoCal, there are very few weekly race series left anymore because most of the SoCal tracks are practice tracks. Not so with REM?REM only holds races and they hold them virtually every weekend of the year. It has the longest series, best run races and offers the most fun. Glen Helen Raceway’s REM race series is the longest point-paying race series in the USA. With almost 40 …

REM GLEN HELEN MOTOCROSS RACE REPORT: BOBBY GARRISON WINS THE PRO CLASS (ON A YAMAHA); STEVEN TOKARSKI TAKES INTERMEDIATES; RANDY SKINNER WINS 125 TWO-STROKE CLASS

Steven Tokarski (710) rides with wild abandon. He is capable to amazing bursts of speed and doesn’t lose momentum in the corners…as you can see. It has been a very rainy winter in SoCal, but the hardcore motocross racers at Glen Helen’s REM races seem to have the magic touch when in comes to inclement weather. With rain storms passing by both North and South, Glen Helen stayed perfectly dry until the motocross races were over?then it poured. Marc Crosby (55) leads a pack into one of REM’s downhill. St…

REM GLEN HELEN: A RARE SUNDAY MOTOCROSS RACE FOR THE REM REGULARS THIS WEEKEND

REM’s hilly layout is challenging and after this week’s rain storm the dirt should be perfect. For SoCal motocross racers there is a chance to race this Sunday at Glen Helen. REM will hold its first race of the year on January 2. Why a Sunday race? Because next Saturday is Anaheim 1 and to accommodate racers who want to get to A1 on time, REM canceled the January 8 race and replaced it with a rare Sunday race on January 2. Although it may seem strange to hold a race on a holiday, it isn?t such a bad ide…

MXA GLEN HELEN RACE REPORT: MXA’S ANNUAL INVITATIONAL MOTOCROSS

Glen Helen’s REM track sits high above the USGP track, Endurocross course and Lucas Oil Offroad truck track. Every year Motocross Action holds an Invitational race for the MXA gang and their friends. It is called an “invitational” race, but there are no invitations sent out?one MXA guy tells another and that guy tells his friend (and they don’t start telling anyone until two days before the race). It is small and cozy?a chance for the gang to get together for fun. Since the MXA wrecking crew includes ev…

REM GLEN HELEN MOTOCROSS RACE REPORT: VANCE & HINES’ STEVEN TOKARSKI WINS, WHILE 1970’s STAR DAVE EROPKIN LET’S THE ONE HE WANTED GET AWAY

Dennis Boulware (44), Greg Nelson (385), David Blunk (280), Dave Eropkin (811) and Willie Amaradio (130) may have been in this order in moto one, but they swapped the top five spots by the end of the second moto. After almost 40 races, the 2010 REM race season wound to a close on Saturday. In what is the longest points paying series in the sport, REM racers have vied to win Glen Helen’s number one plate since January of 2010. Although the points total won?t be out until next week, the top ten will inclu…

REM GLEN HELEN MOTOCROSS: 25TH ANNIVERSARY RACE DRAWS BIG CROWD TO WORLD VET TRACK

Glen Helen is a strange mix of views. As the Over-50 Expert class blasts over a series of small doubles, the giant grandstands of Glen Helen’s Lucas Oil offroad truck course loom in the background. The stars of this week’s REM motocross at Glen Helen, the 25th Anniversary of SoCal’s popular REM racing club, were Tony Amaradio (450 Pro), Steven Tokarski (250 Intermediate), Bill Maxim (Over-60 Expert) and Willie Amaradio (Over-50 Expert). For the 25th Anniversary motocross race, promoters Frank and Myra T…

REM GLEN HELEN MOTOCROSS RACE REPORT: BIRTHDAY RIDES END IN WINS FOR OLSON, STAPLETON & PISARSKI

Garret Hogan (124), Elia Zinetti (107), Dylan Schmoke (270) and Keaton Ward (13) jostle for space. Because of the aged-graded class structure of motocross, a racer spends ten years toiling in the Over-30, Over-40, Over-50 or Over-60 classes. This is no sweat when you first turn 30, but pretty soon you are 39 and everyone else in the class is 30. Then, you make it to 40 and you get to be the young guy in the class for a few years?before the invasion of younger riders starts all over again. No sweat! Soon…

RYAN HUGHES WINS WORLD VETERAN MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP AT GLEN HELEN:

Ryan Hughes swept both motos of the World Vet Championship at Glen Helen. Ryan’s performance is his best selling point for his training, coaching and organic food businesses. To win the World Vet Motocross Championship it helps if you have won it before?at least that’s the way it seemed at the 2010 MTA-sponsored World Vet Motocross Championship . With Expert class titles on the line for riders over 30, over 40, over 50 and over 60, getting your name in the top ten is a major accomplishment, but to win y…

MOTOCROSS ACTION PHOTO GALLERY: WHAT YOU MISSED AT GLEN HELEN THIS WEEKEND

Photos by John Basher and Dan Alamangos This was the smooth part of the Glen Helen World Vet track. Saturday’s track was very rough, but Sunday was considered “smooth” by Glen Helen specialists. They might have been making that up to scare the foreign riders. Ryan Hughes (4) gets a big jump on the pack in the Over-30 Pro class. Ryan was on a stock CRF450 with an FMF exhaust pipe. MXA knows that Ryan was on a stocker because we wouldn’t let him touch the engine on the bike we supplied him. By the time th…

DOCTOR D WINS “DAY ONE” OF THE 2010 WORLD VETERAN MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP

Doug Dubach led every lap of Saturdays’ Over-40 World Vet Championship. Doug Dubach has won 18 World Vet Championship titles over the last 18 years. He added the 18th on Saturday at Glen Helen. The 47-year-old still has to defend his Over-30 Pro Championship on Sunday, but with his win on Saturday at Glen Helen he cemented himself into the Vet racer record books forever. Gordon Ward has had a long career as a professional racer. Dubach holeshot both motos with Gordon Ward directly behind him both times….

2011 MOTOCROSS GRAND PRIX SCHEDULES: THE USGP IS ON MAY 15

Last year the USGP was held one week after the start of the AMA National Motocross series?this year it will be held one week before the AMA National series starts. In what appears to be brilliant scheduling, the Euro riders who are doing the AMA 250 West Supercross series can race the Las Vegas final and the USGP without having to fly back and forth. Additionally, AMA riders will be able to use the USGP as a warm-up race for the first AMA National of the year. Glen Helen will also hold the United States…

REM MOTOCROSS: THE NINTH ANNUAL OCTOBERCROSS FALLS TO AUSTIN HOWELL; RON LECHIEN GETS SECOND

Ron Lechien rolled up his sleeves and went to work in the 450 Pro class. For motocrossers October has been a continuation of SoCal’s weird 2010 weather pattern. It was the coolest summer in decades and October has added to the weather weirdness with more days of rain than ever before. When Californians woke up on Saturday morning, a flash rain storm covered all of SoCal…well, almost all of SoCal. The one place that was spared the heavy downpour was Glen Helen Raceway. In an interesting social phenomen…

RON LECHIEN RETURNS TO PRO MOTOCROSS THIS WEEKEND

Ron Lechien warmed up for the World Vet by racing REM last weekend. Ron Lechien is widely regarded by those in the know, as being one of the most talented riders ever to swing a leg over a motocross bike. Ron’s accomplishments are many: Supercross wins, Motocross des Nations triumphs and the 1985 AMA 125 National title. Blazing speed combined with a smooth flowing style saw Ron often beating the best of the best with seeming ease. After his racing career was over Ronnie went to work at the family busine…

24 HOURS OF GLEN HELEN: PART MOTOCROSS, PART ROAD RACE, PART DESERT & VERY LONG

The 24 Hours of Glen Helen starts with a Le Mans-style start. There are four different waves. It is a dead engine start, with your mechanic holding the bike by its rear fender. The start is a minor portion of a race that lasts all day and all night, but the riders go-for-it anyway. What do you do if you own a motocross facility with access to two motocross tracks, a Lucas Oil offroad truck track, 100 of acres of trails and a paved road race course? You hold a 24-hour offroad race that combines everythin…

REM GLEN HELEN MOTOCROSS RACE REPORT: MYLES TEDDER, BRANDON BRADY & PETE MURRAY LEAD THE WAY IN SOCAL

This is the view from the top of REM’s Mount Whitney. If you throw caution to the win, you can make a pass at the bottom. Photo Dan Alamangos The regular Saturday motocross at Glen Helen is always full of twists and surprises. This Saturday Glen Helen was hosting three events at the same time; (1) REM was racing on the upper track. (2) The Old Timers Club was holding day one of their two-day National on the USGP track; And (3) there was a automobile rally race in the area where the Lucas Oil Offroad Cha…

REM GLEN HELEN MOTOCROSS REPORT: DENNIS STAPLETON, DON GRAHN, MIKE MONAGHAN & TOM WHITE TAKE BIG WINS AT A BUSY GLEN HELEN

MXA’s Dennis Stapleton won the 450 Pro class. It was a packed Saturday at SoCal’s famous Glen Helen Raceway as the Over-The-Hill gang held “day one” of their National on the USGP track, the Lucas Oil Offroad Truck Series took over the short course track and REM Motocross raced on their upper motocross track. Three races on the same day isn?t all that unusual at Glen Helen?and they have held as many six races a week. In fact, over the last two weekends Glen Helen held a two-day WORCS motorcycle race (Sat…

GLEN HELEN’S REM MOTOCROSS TOMORROW-SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 13; BE THERE!

REM’s Mt. Whitney is a two-way street…you gotta come down once you go up. REM is back into action again this Saturday morning. The very, very, local motocross race is where the motorcycle industry comes to race. The loyal REM racers are a hearty bunch and thankfully for this weekend?the weird weather that has struck SoCal this week, will return to the normal sunny skies. For those who like to sleep late, REM motocross practice doesn’t start until 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. REM will race again on November …

REM GLEN HELEN REPORT: SHOWDOWN AT THE WORCS CORRAL: ROBBIE BELL AND NICK BROZOVICH SLAP LEATHER AT REM MOTOCROSS

Next weekend the WORCS series comes to Glen Helen for two days and Robbie Bell and Nick Brozovich decided to come a week early to get in some practice for the cross-country race. Bell (32) and Brozovich (89) were never farther apart than this in the first 450 Pro moto. Brozovich won the first moto with Robbie Bell second and Travis Bell third. REM motocross racers are a hardy lot. They race the longest local race schedules in the USA. There are 40 races in the REM motocross schedule, but September is th…

REM GLEN HELEN MOTOCROSS REPORT: MATT MOSS SWEEPS FOUR MOTOS AT GLEN HELEN; RON LAWSON WINS OVER-50 EXPERT CLASS

Team Suzuki’s Matt Moss. REM Glen Helen is a different kind of motocross race. Here are seven reasons why: (1) It is held on the same hallowed ground as the 1970’s Arroyo Cycle Park (the place where Ray Lopez won the first unofficial 125 National Championship). It isn?t the same track as the Glen Helen National and Grand Prix track. It is situated in the hills above the GP track (although some of it used at the USGP). Sean Borkenhagen. (2) It is the place where the motorcycle industry, at least those in…
