MOTOCROSS ACTION PHOTO GALLERY: WHAT YOU MISSED AT GLEN HELEN THIS WEEKEND

Photos by John Basher and Dan Alamangos This was the smooth part of the Glen Helen World Vet track. Saturday’s track was very rough, but Sunday was considered “smooth” by Glen Helen specialists. They might have been making that up to scare the foreign riders. Ryan Hughes (4) gets a big jump on the pack in the Over-30 Pro class. Ryan was on a stock CRF450 with an FMF exhaust pipe. MXA knows that Ryan was on a stocker because we wouldn’t let him touch the engine on the bike we supplied him. By the time th…

DOCTOR D WINS “DAY ONE” OF THE 2010 WORLD VETERAN MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP

Doug Dubach led every lap of Saturdays’ Over-40 World Vet Championship. Doug Dubach has won 18 World Vet Championship titles over the last 18 years. He added the 18th on Saturday at Glen Helen. The 47-year-old still has to defend his Over-30 Pro Championship on Sunday, but with his win on Saturday at Glen Helen he cemented himself into the Vet racer record books forever. Gordon Ward has had a long career as a professional racer. Dubach holeshot both motos with Gordon Ward directly behind him both times….

2011 MOTOCROSS GRAND PRIX SCHEDULES: THE USGP IS ON MAY 15

Last year the USGP was held one week after the start of the AMA National Motocross series?this year it will be held one week before the AMA National series starts. In what appears to be brilliant scheduling, the Euro riders who are doing the AMA 250 West Supercross series can race the Las Vegas final and the USGP without having to fly back and forth. Additionally, AMA riders will be able to use the USGP as a warm-up race for the first AMA National of the year. Glen Helen will also hold the United States…

REM MOTOCROSS: THE NINTH ANNUAL OCTOBERCROSS FALLS TO AUSTIN HOWELL; RON LECHIEN GETS SECOND

Ron Lechien rolled up his sleeves and went to work in the 450 Pro class. For motocrossers October has been a continuation of SoCal’s weird 2010 weather pattern. It was the coolest summer in decades and October has added to the weather weirdness with more days of rain than ever before. When Californians woke up on Saturday morning, a flash rain storm covered all of SoCal…well, almost all of SoCal. The one place that was spared the heavy downpour was Glen Helen Raceway. In an interesting social phenomen…

RON LECHIEN RETURNS TO PRO MOTOCROSS THIS WEEKEND

Ron Lechien warmed up for the World Vet by racing REM last weekend. Ron Lechien is widely regarded by those in the know, as being one of the most talented riders ever to swing a leg over a motocross bike. Ron’s accomplishments are many: Supercross wins, Motocross des Nations triumphs and the 1985 AMA 125 National title. Blazing speed combined with a smooth flowing style saw Ron often beating the best of the best with seeming ease. After his racing career was over Ronnie went to work at the family busine…

24 HOURS OF GLEN HELEN: PART MOTOCROSS, PART ROAD RACE, PART DESERT & VERY LONG

The 24 Hours of Glen Helen starts with a Le Mans-style start. There are four different waves. It is a dead engine start, with your mechanic holding the bike by its rear fender. The start is a minor portion of a race that lasts all day and all night, but the riders go-for-it anyway. What do you do if you own a motocross facility with access to two motocross tracks, a Lucas Oil offroad truck track, 100 of acres of trails and a paved road race course? You hold a 24-hour offroad race that combines everythin…

REM GLEN HELEN MOTOCROSS RACE REPORT: MYLES TEDDER, BRANDON BRADY & PETE MURRAY LEAD THE WAY IN SOCAL

This is the view from the top of REM’s Mount Whitney. If you throw caution to the win, you can make a pass at the bottom. Photo Dan Alamangos The regular Saturday motocross at Glen Helen is always full of twists and surprises. This Saturday Glen Helen was hosting three events at the same time; (1) REM was racing on the upper track. (2) The Old Timers Club was holding day one of their two-day National on the USGP track; And (3) there was a automobile rally race in the area where the Lucas Oil Offroad Cha…

REM GLEN HELEN MOTOCROSS REPORT: DENNIS STAPLETON, DON GRAHN, MIKE MONAGHAN & TOM WHITE TAKE BIG WINS AT A BUSY GLEN HELEN

MXA’s Dennis Stapleton won the 450 Pro class. It was a packed Saturday at SoCal’s famous Glen Helen Raceway as the Over-The-Hill gang held “day one” of their National on the USGP track, the Lucas Oil Offroad Truck Series took over the short course track and REM Motocross raced on their upper motocross track. Three races on the same day isn?t all that unusual at Glen Helen?and they have held as many six races a week. In fact, over the last two weekends Glen Helen held a two-day WORCS motorcycle race (Sat…

GLEN HELEN’S REM MOTOCROSS TOMORROW-SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 13; BE THERE!

REM’s Mt. Whitney is a two-way street…you gotta come down once you go up. REM is back into action again this Saturday morning. The very, very, local motocross race is where the motorcycle industry comes to race. The loyal REM racers are a hearty bunch and thankfully for this weekend?the weird weather that has struck SoCal this week, will return to the normal sunny skies. For those who like to sleep late, REM motocross practice doesn’t start until 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. REM will race again on November …

REM GLEN HELEN REPORT: SHOWDOWN AT THE WORCS CORRAL: ROBBIE BELL AND NICK BROZOVICH SLAP LEATHER AT REM MOTOCROSS

Next weekend the WORCS series comes to Glen Helen for two days and Robbie Bell and Nick Brozovich decided to come a week early to get in some practice for the cross-country race. Bell (32) and Brozovich (89) were never farther apart than this in the first 450 Pro moto. Brozovich won the first moto with Robbie Bell second and Travis Bell third. REM motocross racers are a hardy lot. They race the longest local race schedules in the USA. There are 40 races in the REM motocross schedule, but September is th…

REM GLEN HELEN MOTOCROSS REPORT: MATT MOSS SWEEPS FOUR MOTOS AT GLEN HELEN; RON LAWSON WINS OVER-50 EXPERT CLASS

Team Suzuki’s Matt Moss. REM Glen Helen is a different kind of motocross race. Here are seven reasons why: (1) It is held on the same hallowed ground as the 1970’s Arroyo Cycle Park (the place where Ray Lopez won the first unofficial 125 National Championship). It isn?t the same track as the Glen Helen National and Grand Prix track. It is situated in the hills above the GP track (although some of it used at the USGP). Sean Borkenhagen. (2) It is the place where the motorcycle industry, at least those in…

UPDATED RESULTS: HOW THE REM BOYS DID AT LORETTA LYNN’S

Most SoCal racers are happy to stay where they are, race every weekend and enjoy the good life in sunny SoCal. They see no reason to travel outside of Southern California to race because the Los Angeles area has over ten different racetrack within a couple hours drive (Cahuilla, Glen Helen, Perris, Starwest, Comp Edge, Racetown, Piru, Pala, Gorman, Av Motoplex, Barona Oaks and Milestone). But there are the adventuresome among the SoCal hardcore, so we decided to see how the racers from Glen Helen’s week…

REM GLEN HELEN RACE REPORT: TEAM SUZUKI’S MATT MOSS WINS PRO CLASS; JUSTIN JONES TAKES INTERMEDIATES (AND SCARES MOSS)

Australian Matt Moss won the 450 Pro class. Team Suzuki’s Matt Moss came to REM this weekend at Glen Helen to log some saddle time during the AMA National Motocross series’ two-week break. There was no doubt that Moss was the fastest rider on the track, but the 450 Pro winner had to spend 20 minutes in the first moto running down 450 Intermediate winner Justin Jones. With all the Pro classes (250, 450 and Over-40 combined with the 250 and 450 Intermediate classes), it was assumed that Moss would pull th…

Nestled at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains in Northern San Bernardino, the 256-acre facility has been the scene of numerous national and international motocross and offroad racing events over its 25 year history. For motorcycle racers, Glen Helen will still …

REM GLEN MOTOCROSS HELEN REPORT: RON LECHIEN, ROBBIE BELL & PETE MURRAY SHINE ON USGP TRACK

Ron Lechien (4) has been riding a lot in the last year. Ron looks fit and even in 95-degree heat didn’t let the grind of a 9-to-5 job at Maxima Lubricants slow his passion for racing. REM’s weekly motocross race was moved to the Glen Helen AMA National track (which was still in the USGP configuration) because the starting line of the REM motocross track was being used as the staging area and pits for a two-day NAHA Pro Hillclimb event. Not that the REM racers were complaining about moving over from thei…

MOTOCROSS ACTION’S MID-WEEK REPORT SPECIAL EDITION:

By: Zap HANGTOWN NATIONAL OUTTAKES The weather for this year’s Hangtown National couldn’t have been more perfect. Not only do you get a lot more racing for your outdoor dollar, but how about paying $15 less to park your car than at the stadiums? Hangtown was Magoo country. The American’s were amazed at the pristine set-up of Team KTM’s pit – especially the white tile floors! However, it did seem a bit odd to find (and hear) the grungy Street Drum Crew banging away next to the super sano KTM pit who hire…

GLEN HELEN PRACTICE DAY PHOTOS:

Ryan Dungey was flying at Glen Helen. He’s aiming for his fourth championship in as many tries. Kyle Cunningham had a great race on the Valli Motorsports YZ450F at Las Vegas. He was out at Glen Helen putting the Valli Motorsports YZ450F through its paces. He looked very good. Usually back in Georgia, it was nice to see Martin Davalos spinning laps out west. Here, he flies over the massive soon-to-be USGP finish line jump. Jessica Patterson switched brands during the off-season. She’s aiming to take back…

JODY’S TRACK DESIGNER’S DIARY: BUILDING THE 2006 GLEN HELEN NATIONAL TRACK

Glen Helen from the air during construction. I love Disneyland. I can’t help myself–even though they have, over their history, refused entrance to people with long hair, been caught up in labor disputes, suffered accusations from special interest groups and demanded that people turn their CZ T-shirts inside out before being allowed in the park. Still, you gotta love a giant conglomerate that can mix pleasure with torture. I am pained by the corporate evil behind the joy at Disneyland, but I still…
