MOTOCROSS ACTION RACING LORE: DANNY LaPORTE’S 1981 MOTOCROSS DES NATIONS TRIUMPH

?The most exciting moment of my life was the first year that Team USA won the Motocross des Nations in 1981. As a team, we weren?t expected to win, nor did we even think that we would win. Honda put together a group of riders that probably weren?t the best choices to race. For years, Yamaha had a rider that was capable of doing well at the MXDN, and then Suzuki would have a guy. The problem was that because the riders were on different teams, there was an every-man-for-himself sort of mentality. Donnie …

SURPRISE OR NO SURPRISE? NO TEAM CANADA AT THE 2012 MXDN IN BELGIUM

It is not mandatory that a nation send a team to the MXDN?but when it doesn?t there is more than a little hand wringing about that nation’s status, organizations and officials. It’s no secret that Canada is a divided motocross country with the CMA and CMRC at odds with each other over control of the sport…or at the very least control of their fiefdoms. Canada has great riders who could represent their citizens with strong performances?but it isn?t going to happen in 2012. Word out of the Great White N…

MOTOCROSS ACTION’S MID-WEEK REPORT: (02/10/12)

By John Minert TWEETS OF THE DAY: BAD NEWS FROM RYAN SIPES & VISITORS AT THE DOOR MXA INTERVIEW: MARVIN MUSQUIN Musquin (left) finished third at A2 and sits third in the points chase. We waited a full year to see what the former GP champion could do in Supercross after he was sidelined with injuries last year. Before the 2012 Supercross season began, ‘Movin Marv’ made three impressions on us: He was fast outdoors (and claimed to like Supercross best), he had a very outgoing personality and he was as…

MOTOCROSS DES NATIONS NEWS: EVERY COUNTRY THAT HAS SIGNED UP (CHINA YES, CANADA NO, THAILAND YES, MEXIXO NO)

Nothing is more fraught with peril than choosing a Motocross des Nations team. Public opinion about who should be on the team doesn?t always jibe with the favoritism, politics or logistics of choosing three riders to race for their country. Some nations have an abundance of wealth when it comes to talent…and they have to take a wait-and-see approach to choosing their riders, while others, like Italy and Belgium, only have two good riders and have to choose from the best of the left-overs for their thi…

YAMAHA GP RIDER DAVID PHILIPPAERTS BREAKS BOTH WRISTS: OUT OF GP’S, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE MXDN?

Yamaha has confirmed that David Philippaerts is likely to miss the rest of the 2011 FIM Motocross World Championship after crashing while practicing Wednesday at a track in Germany in preparation for the Grand Prix of Czech Republic this weekend. Reportedly, the injuries were sustained as the 2008 450 World Motocross Champion landed heavily over a double jump and tweaked his wrists. The 27-year-old factory Yamaha rider underwent surgery Wednesday evening. Philippaerts was seventh in the 2011 450 World C…

MOTOCROSS ACTION’S MID-WEEK REPORT (07/13/11)

MXA INTERVIEW BLAKE BAGGETT Blake is a trend-setter. Winning always looks good. MXA : What are the toughest things about being a pro? Blake: A big difference between pros and amateur guys, is that pros have to race week-in and week-out. That’s definitely one of the hardest things. When you are traveling you don’t want to get sick, and in the airplane there’s a lot of of germs. You can also get jet-lagged pretty easily, or have a rough flight. With the abuse of racing week-in and week-out you don’t have …

ASK THE MXPERTS: WHAT’S WITH MXA’S REFUSAL TO QUIT CALLING THE MXON THE MOTOCROSS DES NATIONS

Dear MXA ,     MXA always seems so contrary. I noticed that MXA consistently calls the Motocross of Nations the “Motocross des Nations,” and that you use the acronym MXDN, while everybody else says “of Nations and MXoN.” Why do you insist on this? I’m not anti-MXA because I am totally in favor of your refusal to call the AMA Supercross classes “Supercross” and “Supercross Lites.” I wish Feld had a brain in their combined heads and changed the class names back like the AMA Nationals did (w…

THE OTHER GUY JUST BLINKED: TEAM ITALY MAKES A COMPROMISE, CAIROLI AND PHILIPPAERTS WILL BE AT THE MXDN

Philippaerts. Jersey-Gate is over! In a meeting between a bunch of suits from the FIM (including President Giuseppe Luongo and Wolfgang Srb) an agreement was reached about the Italian team jersey. Both KTM and Yamaha wanted their logos to be on the front of the Italian jersey. Team Italy wanted it to look more like the soccer World Cup jersey that is traditionally worn by Italian teams. In the end KTM and Yamaha held strong and won. Italy for their part, gets a better team for the MXDN. Here is the comp…

BRITISH HOAX ON TEAM PUERTO RICO: ZACH OSBORNE, KYLE REGAL & A SURPRISE FOR THE MOTOCROSS DES NATIONS:

This isn’t going to happen, but you gotta love the British for trying. They spend a lot of time discussing the possibility of a Team Scotland?which would mean Dean Wilson, Stephen Sword and Shaun Simpson would be the team?unfortunately, the Scottish association is affliliated with the British ACU, thus, the Scots have no standing with the FIM. Zach Osborne has said that he told the reporter that the third rider would be a Puerto Rican. You could click on mx-pure.com to see the story for yourself, but si…
