AMA SUPERCROSS: VILLOPOTO DOES WHAT HE HAS TO DO, WHILE STEWIE MIGHT HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR (AGAIN)

A frigid Rice-Eccles Stadium. Ryan Villopoto put his stamp on the 2011 AMA Supercross series by winning his sixth event and  moving into a nine point lead over his rivals. Nine points may not sound like much, but just a week ago that is the points spread that covered four riders in the title chase. With one race to go, Villlopoto can finish as far back as fifth in next week’s final event (if second place rider Chad Reed wins) and still clinch the 2011 crown. James Stewart holeshot the main event wi…

ASK THE MXPERTS: WHAT IS THE REAL DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TITANIUM AND STAINLESS STEEL HEAD PIPE?

Dear MXA,       Is there any technical advantage to a titanium head pipe over a stainless steel head pipe?other than weight?       No, just the opposite. A titanium head pipe is lighter, usually between one and two ounces lighter, but in our experience titanium head pipes are prone to more rock damage than stainless steel. Why? Most stainless head pipes have a 1.0mm wall thickness, while titanium head pipes use a thinner 0.8mm wall thickness. The thinner…

SEATTLE SUPERCROSS: STEWART WINS AND GAINS POINTS, VILLOPOTO LOSES AND GAINS POINTS, REED CRASHES AND GAINS POINTS, DUNGEY IS THE ONLY LOSER

Sun, in Seattle? Going into the Seattle Supercross Ryan Villopoto had a five point lead on Ryan Dungey…coming out of Seattle Ryan had a six point lead (only now it was on Chad Reed). Villopoto was fourth overall?but still gained points. Going into Seattle Chad Reed was eight points behind Villopoto, and even though Chad crashed and fell back from second to third place late in the race, he left Seattle only six points behind Ryan Villopoto. Reed gained points. James Stewart was 16 point back going into…

WHO DID WHAT IN THIS WEEK’S SUPERCROSS CIRCUS? CHAD HAS A BAD NIGHT

Mike Alessi is getting his mojo back. It appears that DeCoster’s advice to Alessi to calm down, relax and take what he can get out of the 2011 Supercross season is paying off. Mike has improved immensely since the season started and looks like he will be ready for the outdoor season to start.                                                  Photo: Hop…

ASK THE MXPERTS: WHAT IS MXA’S TAKE ON THE JAMES STEWART ARREST? HOW WILL IT AFFECT HIS CAREER?

Dear MXA,     Since MXA has never been afraid to say it like it is, I have a few questions for you. Do you think James Stewart has kissed his career goodbye? Will no one will want to sponsor a convicted felon? If convicted will he be able to leave the USA to compete in events in Canada and Japan? James Stewart is accused of and, according to media reports, confessed to police officers to a third-degree felony (although there are conflicting reports that he might be charged with a first-de…

MOTOCROSS ACTION’S MID-WEEK REPORT (03/30/11)

By John Basher   PHOTO OF THE WEEK     I thought that it was going to be a challenge picking the photo of the week. It was, until James Stewart decided to impersonate a police officer and pull over three off-duty cops. Oops. Bubba was booked, had his mug shot taken, and made big news. It’s a big no-no to impersonate a police officer and ranks as a felony. Above is his police photo.     What does this all mean for Stewart? Jail time? Community service? A depleting fan b…

CLEMENT DESALLE TALKS ABOUT HIS GRAND PRIX MOTOCROSS CHANCES & AMA SUPERCROSS DISAPPOINTMENT

With a third place in 2009 and runner-up in 2010, Clement Desalle is hoping that his career trajectory continues rising for 2011 when the young Belgian faces his sixth season in the FIM 450 World Championship and just his second as a works Rockstar Energy Suzuki World 450 rider. The 21-year-old signed off an impressive?if at times painful?first campaign on the RM-Z450WS in 2010 with victory at Fermo in Italy for the Championship curtain-closer and will be hoping for two in a row when the ’11 series laun…

IS IT TRUE? BUBBA TO TRY TO RACE INDY CARS THIS YEAR

Is that Chad’s Australian V8 Supercar behind me? According to the Indianapolis Star: If the Izod IndyCar Series is serious about accepting AMA Supercross star James Stewart to compete for a $5 million prize at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in October, Stewart is happy to participate. IndyCar will allow up to five drivers?or riders?not currently in its series to challenge for the prize. “If they want me in the race, I’ll go,” Stewart said after Saturday night’s Supercross race at Lucas Oil Stadium. Stewart,…

APPROVED MOTORCYCLES FOR 2011 SUPERCROSS / MOTOCROSS SEASON: IS YOUR BIKE ON THE LIST?

Legal or illegal? The Kawasaki KX450F is legal in AMA pro racing. The following equipment list shows all motorcycles which are approved for 2011 AMA Motocross and Supercross. Don?t try to make sense of it, but understand that motorcycles that are more than five years old are not eligible for AMA Pro racing (which means that any bike older than 2006 cannot be raced). These rules don’t apply to local or amateur racing. Legal or illegal? The KTM 150SX is illegal, but for some reason the 2006 KTM 125SX is l…

ASK THE MXPERTS: SHOULDN’T JAMES STEWART BE DQ’ED FOR OUTSIDE ASSISTANCE?

James Stewart rights his bike on TV with the aid of the Asterisk medical crew. Ooops. Dear MXA,     I read your ?Ask the MXperts? answer about Mike Alessi pulling over, and decided to ask a question of my own. Shouldn?t James Stewart be disqualified for receiving outside assistance to get back on his bike after his Daytona Supercross crash. Don?t the rules state that the rider cannot receive any help outside the designated mechanics area?     Yes, the rules do say that ?ass…

ASK THE MXPERTS: WHY DID MIKE ALESSI LET JAMES STEWART BY AT DAYTONA?

This is what you saw on TV. What you don’t see is that Villopoto is coming and the blue flags are flying. Dear MXA,     I almost jumped through my TV set when I saw Mike Alessi pull over and stop to let James Stewart by for ninth place at Daytona. Wouldn?t Roger DeCoster go ballistic if he saw that? Doesn?t Mike have any pride? He should be let go from KTM.     You are being a little harsh. If you watch that pass again, you will see that Mike was being given the blue flag (infor…

ATLANTA SUPERCROSS: THE TRUCE IS OVER; REED AND STEWART THROW ONE AWAY (OR WOULD THAT BE ?THROW TWO AWAY?): VILLOPOTO SAYS THANK YOU:

Stewart gets the launch. Here is a quick summary: Stewie led, but had trouble with a step-off lip and corkscrewed it. Reed took over the lead, but had trouble with lappers. Stewart capitalized on Reed’s lapper troubles and passed Reed, with Regal making up an L&M sandwich (minus Larry Brooks…James Stewart released the least believable press release ever produced about Brook’s absence). In desperation, Reed cut across the inside to block Stewart at all costs. Bubba might as well have yelled,?Damn t…

ZAP CATCHES UP WITH MOTOCROSS IDOL MARTY SMITH

By Zap The first time I saw Marty Smith race it was when he won the High School Motocross Finals race that acted as intermission at the Superbowl of Motocross in 1974. I never liked Marty Smith when I was growing up. After all, how could I when as the sole Yamaha partisan at my Junior High School I was faced with a daily onslaught of antagonism from the kids who rode Honda XR75s and celebrated each of Smith’s National wins with strident anti-Yamaha taunts. Still, when a photo of Smith eating strawberry …
