TWO-STROKE TUESDAY | TOM CLAIREAUX’S 2020 HONDA CR500AF

“I quit my job last year in the UK at the start of first lockdown due to Covid-19  and started rebuilding/restoring old Evo bikes for a living. It was something I loved doing and would be a dream job of mine. So I thought, why not, the industry was booming.

“I then got into the 500cc two-stroke scene a bit. I saw a few nicely built ones that had been done, but wanted to build the coolest looking one I could. Got myself a 2017 Honda CRF450 chassis and a 1988 CR500 engine. The hard part was combining the two into one. I made the old engine fit into he new chassis by having it  professionally welded. The toughest part to make work was the airbox. I designed and made my own carbon fiber one to made it work.

“With the 2017 CRF450 already having the mounting points for the twice pipes, I thought it would only be right to replace the twin four-stroke pipes with twin two-stroke pipes. I cerakoted all the engine and brakes myself in the gloss black and added all the top-notch upgrades. It has a 2001 Honda CR250 digital ignition system. Titanium bolts and custom graphics went with traditional old school HRC Honda colors and I added the fork gators to give it that old school touch.” —Tom Claireaux’s from the UK
