UNADILLA NATIONAL MOTOCROSS RESULTS: WILSON & VILLOPOTO LEAD A KAWASAKI SWEEP

Following a two week break, the AMA    National Motocross Championship returned to action at Unadilla where Ryan Villopoto grabbed his second win of the season to extend his points lead in the 450 Class standings. Meanwhile, in the 250 class Dean Wilson swept both motos to take his first overall win of the year…although he has been the points leader for most of the series.

450 CLASS

After taking over the top spot in the 450 championship for the first time this summer at the previous round, Villopoto entered the day with a s,all one-point lead over Ryan Dungey. With the Unadilla round falling on his birthday, Villopoto was looking to make a statement, and began the day by topping the time sheet in practice. In Moto one, he relied on a strong start to move into second behind Honda fill-in rider Justin Barcia. After pacing his rookie counterpart for nearly half the moto, Villopoto made the move for the lead on Lap seven, and never looked back.

The second 450 moto presented a similar situation for Villopoto, slotting into second place after another top-five start, this time behind KTM’s Mike Alessi. Villopoto made short work of Alessi, passing him on Lap three, and finishing off the day with convincing 1-1 moto scores.

Villopoto said, “It was definitely a good day. The team and I made the decision to go to 2012 Kawasaki for this weekend, and it was definitely the right move. Knowing what we had was a lot better, I felt like we were in a great position to win today. I got good starts and was able to work my way through the field. It seemed easy to get by guys. I don’t know if it was the bike, or my confidence, but it’s put us in good position for the championship.”

Ryan Dungey battled with Justin Barcia throughout both motos, prevailing each time to garner 2-2 moto scores and finish second overall, minimizing the damage in the point standings to a six point loss. “I fought it a bit today,” said Dungey. “I didn’t get the start I needed in either moto. I had to battle through guys, and once I got into second, I couldn’t make the time up on Ryan Villopoto. We’re looking forward to the next three races, and battling for this championship.”

Barcia, who moved up from the 250 class to fill-in for the injured Trey Canard, made a spectacular debut…and Team Honda may well have found Canard’s next teammate for 2012. Barcia went 3-3 in his first-ever 450 National.

Villopoto’s lead in the championship now sits at seven points over Dungey. Chad Reed had a bad day, that was not only hurt by the arrival of Barcia in the class, but because he admits to being a little gun shy after his big Millville crash. Reed is now 25 points back. It’s not over to Chad, because there are 150 points left to be earned and this season has been about not making any mistakes. Chad can only hope that the two Ryan’s have a bad moto somewhere in the next six motos.

250 CLASS

Through the first eight rounds, Dean Wilson has amassed the most points, but he hadn’t won a race, while his Pro Circuit teammates had won every round. At Unadilla, Wilson removed the blight from his points lead by going 1-1 and in the process moving his points lead to 25 points over teammate Blake Baggett (after Tyla Rattray DNFed moto two).

“It was a great day,” said Wilson. “I was just having fun out there. I feel like when I’m having fun, I definitely ride my best. I’ve been angry to not get an overall yet this season, but now I feel relieved. I just felt good and refreshed and excited to race again. I couldn’t sleep last night I was so excited.”

Blake Baggett finished second with a 2-3, while Geico Honda’s Eli Tomac rounded out the overall podium in third (5-2). Tomac appearance on the podium cracked Pro Circuit’s stranglehold on the top three spots…although Tomac is already mathematically eliminated from any chance of winning the 250 crown

There is no AMA National next weekend. The series resumes in Southwick on August 27.

MXDN TEAM ANNOUNCED

At Unadilla, Team USA was announced. Although everybody already knew who would be on the team?it is officially Blake Bagget, Ryan Dungey and Ryan Villopoto.
