PRE-EAST RUTHERFORD ROUNDUP

One more race until we go to Las Vegas. While the focus for most riders has turned to the AMA Outdoor Nationals, some haven’t given up on this Supercross season. Eli Tomac has had a lackluster indoor season. While he won in Daytona, he has only had few podiums otherwise. According to Tomac, he just couldn’t find the right setup for his KX450F. While he couldn’t put together a championship this year, he and his team made some major changes in the last few weeks. The tweaks led to a strong race and podium in Foxborough. If the changes stick, they may play a big role for Kawasaki come 2017. Many consider the 20-lap battles between Ryan Dungey and Ken Roczen from Santa Clara to Indianapolis, the continuation of a single race. Before the first lap was over, Roczen would be on Dungey’s rear fender and stay there the majority of the race. Then the Roczen vsersus Dungey battle ended quite early in Foxborough. While Ryan Dungey got a good start, Roczen was able to catch him before the first lap was over and go on to win. When Eli Tomac joined the party on the fifth lap, he turned out to be a bigger threat to Roczen than Dungey was. Unfortunately, this is the level of racing that should have happened earlier in the season. Unless Ryan Dungey gets a 15th place or worse, Ken Roczen is locked out of the 2016 championship. One thing is certain, if this is an indication of how the AMA Outdoor Nationals will start, we might witness a more interesting championship.

Of the three Supercross 2016 Championships, the 250 East has proven to be the most exciting, volatile and unpredictable. Malcolm Stewart is in the driver seat, but Aaron Plessinger is only 5 points behind and Jeremy Martin 14 out. Martin Davalos is has been finishing strong  the last few weeks as he sits fourth in points.

BASIC STATS

(i.e. if a rider wins the Championship in their third year of 250SX competition, they will be ineligible for the 250SX class regardless of points and therefore not eligible to defend their 250SX Championship title).
