ASK THE MXPERTS: HOW LOUD IS LOUD WHEN IT COME TO EXHAUST PIPES?
Isn’t it crazy to measure sound on a scale of 1 to 100. What difference would a one percent difference in sound make?
Sound is not measured the way you think. A decibel is not a percentage point. A decibel is a unit for expressing the intensity of sounds on a scale from zero (for the least perceptible sound) to 130 (for the average pain level of sound). A decibel scale isn’t linear. It is logarithmic, which means as the decibel number increases, its intensity grows exponentially. A 90 decibel sound is 1,000,000,000 (one billion) times more intense than a barely detectable sound. Doubling the intensity of a sound by running two equal bikes together will increase the overall decibel output by three. Doubling the distance between you and the bike and the sound output will measure 3 decibel less.
