WHAT’S THE STORY ON BRAKTEC COMPONENTS ON THE 2024 GASGAS MODELS

If you have a 2023 or 2024 GasGas, look closely at the logo on your bike’s hydraulics. You may think that it is the Brembo  logo, but it isn’t. The Braktec logo (shown above) is in fact a Brembo product, but it comes from a different factory. In MXA’s experience, the Braktec brakes and clutch parts don’t come with the high-end performance that you’d expect from a Brembo product. When we first noticed Braktec parts on some GasGas motocross models in 2023 it was because the brakes didn’t work as well as what we expected. That is when we discovered they were from Braktec, not Brembo. The Braktec parts did not appear on many 2023 GasGas motocross models, but they have been used on Husqvarna and GasGas off-road models in large numbers.

The KTM Group, which includes Husqvarna and GasGas, is a valued customer of Brembo products, but supply line shortages caused by a massive growth in Brembo sales in 2022 made it difficult for the Austrian manufacturer to get an adequate supply of Brembo brakes to fill the needs of their 2023 assembly lines. Since certain models of Husqvarna and GasGas off-road bikes already used Braktec brakes, hydraulic clutch master cylinders and clutch slave cylinders, it was decided to fill holes in the production capacity by spec’ing Braktec on some 2023 GasGas motocross models.

Now for 2024, Braktec is the official OEM supplier for all GasGas dirt bikes. This shouldn’t come as a surprise. GasGas is marketed as an affordable version of a KTM with different tires, handlebars, triple clamps and with a few accessories left off—most notably the map switch . These cost savings originally brought GasGas to the market at the same retail price as Kawasaki, Honda and Yamaha. But, the 2024 GasGas models went up in price, because of the inflationary issues of the global market. Thus, Braktec’s less expensive components were spec’ed to keep manufacturing costs down.

Because of supply-line issues with Brembo, some 2023 GasGas motocross models were spec’ed with Braktec master cylinders, calipers and clutch slave units. For 2024 all GasGas bikes will come with Braktec hydraulic components

MXA does know that KTM did run tests on improving Braktec brakes before committing to switching their motocross line-up over. And the 2024 Braktec equipped GasGas machines get the updated Braktec components. In MXA’s testing the new Braktec components are better than the 2023 parts. However, the 2024 Braktec brakes, albeit better than what they offered last year,  have no where near the pucker power of the Brembo components that come on the Husqvarna and KTM.

Here is the whole Braktec story. In January 2012, the Spanish J.Juan Group purchased fellow Spanish brake manufacturer AJP brakes and combined their two brake products into a new brake system called Braktec specializing in trials bike brake systems. Then, in 2021, Brembo bought 100 percent of Braktec for $78 million dollars. This followed their purchase of the Danish brake pad company SBS in 2020 for $32 million dollars. Brembo has aggressive expansion plans and also owns AP Racing, Marchesini wheels, Breco rotors and the low-cost, Indian-made brake system called ByBre (which stand for “By Brembo.”)
