ASK THE MXPERTS: WHEN IS KTM GOING TO MAKE AN ALUMINUM FRAME?
Is KTM ever going to make an aluminum frame like all the Japanese brands?
Wash your mouth out with soap. We hope not, but we learned a long time ago that you can never say never. Yamaha’s most famous engineer, the man who designed the YZ400F and YZ250F, told us that Yamaha would never make an aluminum frame, but a year later they did.
Suffice it to say that KTM has built prototype aluminum frames and tested them in the past. In fact, when MXA was visiting KTM’s Austrian factory in 2015, we saw several aluminum frames sitting in a corner. When we asked about them, the KTM engineers said that they had not wanted to close the door to aluminum frames, so they decided to build a couple of designs to try, but the test reports weren’t as good as with their chromoly steel frames, so they shelved the project.
