DREAM JOBS: HOW TO MAKE A LIVING DOING WHAT YOU LOVE (10/20/11)

DEAN GIBSON TEAM
HONDA ENGINE TECHNICIAN

STARTING POINT: “This is my 21st year doing this. I grew up working on my own stuff. I hooked up with Phil Lawrence back in 1988 and started going to the races with him. At the races, I met people and learned as I went. From there I progressed through the ranks.”

THE JOB: “An engine will come in, and the mechanic will pull the head off and give it to me. I take it apart, inspect everything, service it and get it back together. The mechanic builds the engine, and then I run it on the dyno to make sure everything is up to par. When any test parts come from Japan, I run through them and throw away anything that’s not good?we don’t want to waste the riders’ time. Then, we go testing and run through the parts with the riders. Watching a rider win and do well on stuff you built for him is the best thing.”
