Doug Dubach went 1-1 on his YZ426 to clinch his third consecutive World Four Stroke Championship. Held on a Glen Helen Raceway track that included three separate hills, a rocketship straight and three-minute lap time, Dubach made short work of a field that included former Thunder Bike Champion Spud Walters (Dubach is this year’s Pace Thunder Bike Champion), former Team Yamaha rider Damon Bradshaw (dressed in No Fear gear), Suzuki test rider Rich Taylor (on a works fork equipped DRZ), Former 125 National Champion Ron Lechien (who has been racing local races in the San Diego area for the last two months), Former World Four-Stroke Champion Gordon Ward (on a 503 VOR) and Nathan Woods (on the highest placing KTM).
ÿNo shows included: (1) Cannondale, although they did have execs there to talk to racers (they vow to ship their first 2001 production bikes by May 14) (2) Team KTM. Since Shayne King will have to race his first-ever AMA National at Glen Helen in less than a month, most pundits expected KTM to have him there. It would have been a good warm-up for the former 500 World Champion. (3) Jeff Emig. Emig was rumored to have signed to ride the injured Jimmy Button’s YZ426 in the 250 Nationals and could have used the 4-stroke race as a warm up, but Emig and Yamaha could not come to terms (plus Yamaha didn’t feel they needed another rider as long as they had Dubach).
