FORMER AMA CHAIRMAN ARRAIGNED IN OHIO COURT: He is Accused Of Stealing $109,000 From The AMA, But He’s Still In The AMA Hall Of Fame; Go Figure!
FORMER AMA CHAIRMAN ARRAIGNED IN OHIO COURT: HE IS ACCUSED OF STEALING $109,000 FROM THE AMA
Former American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Board of Directors Chairman Dal Smilie was arraigned in Ohio’s Fairfield County court this week on felony charges in connection with evidence discovered by the AMA that Mr. Smilie submitted unsubstantiated expense reimbursement claims over a period of years. Smilie was a member of the association’s board of directors for 25 years, including a term as chairman, before resigning in November 2007.
Mr. Smilie entered a plea of not guilty in response to a Fairfield County grand jury indictment on charges of theft by deception and receiving stolen property in the matter, which involves more than $100,000. He was free on a $25,000 surety bond and a $10,000 recognizance bond.
The grand jury case is a criminal action that comes after a civil case settled last year in which Mr. Smilie satisfied the Association’s claim (by reportedly paying restitution). The criminal case is expected to continue through the Fairfield County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney.
In a weird twist of fate, Dal Smilie is a member of the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame. There is no mention on his Hall of Fame bio about his alleged wrongdoings.
