Monte Lee: Desert racer, flagman and good guy.

Monte Lee passed away on Friday, December 7, 2017, from medical complications. Monte is best known by modern day racers as the finish line flagman at Glen Helen Raceway for the last 20 years. With his handlebar moustache and unlit cigar Monte was a true character that the local racers loved.

Monte doing what he did best.

But what most of the young riders he befriended over the years did not know was that Monte was a former District 37 desert racing star in the 1970s and 1980s. His name and photo often appeared in Cycle News in the District 37 race results. In fact, Monte came from a motorcycle family, his dad, who passed away in 1990, owned Lee’s Motorcycle Shop in Pomona, California, for 30 years.

“Go ahead and light that cigar, Monte.”
