JOAQUIM RODRIQUEZ WINS AT REM GLEN HELEN: JUSTIN KEENEY DISAPPEARS

Willy Musgrave traded paint with Johnny Campbell.

Joaquim Rodriquez and Justin Keeney engaged in a two-moto slugfest at Glen Helen’s REM race this weekend, with Keeny winning moto one and Rodriquez taking moto two. This week’s REM track went up one side of the big uphill and then over the backside before emerging ÿ30 second later on the west side of the layout. With all the marbles on the line, Rodriquez chased Keeney over the hill with three laps to go…and a half minute later only the Portuguese rider came back into view. Keeney disappeared, never to ride back into sight. Keeney’s DNF handed the 250F class victory to Rodriquez.

Joaquim Rodriquez took the 250F win.

Tony Amaradio took the 450 win over Matty Dowell, Kyle Stauffer and Mark Tilley, while Baja ace Johnny Campbell and MXA test rider Willy Musgrave were never more than ten feet apart in both Vet Pro motos. Musgrave took home the dough, while fellow MXA test riders Tim Olson and John Basher won the Vet Intermediates and 250F Juniors respectively (as for the rest of the MXA gang; Team Yamaha mechanic Alan Olson was second the Over-60 Masters, sandwiched between fellow MXA-ites Bengt Johansson and Feets Minert; Tom Hinz had an imperfect day with a 1-7 in the Vet class (for third); former REM number one Riders of the Year George Kohler and Jody Weisel took fifth in the 50 Masters and third in the 50 Intermediates respectively; and Billy Musgrave moved up from the minis to race his first-ever 125 race–taking second in the 125 Beginners with a 1-4.

Chad Reed’s Supercross mechanic, Alan Olson, raced on his week off from the AMA Nationals.

THE MOST COMPETITIVE CLASS

The toughest class of the 104-degree day at Glen Helen was the always large Over-40 Junior class. Russel Brown’s 1-3 took gold ahead of Jim Ratlisberger’s 3-2, Mark McKellop’s 4-1, Ted Kukla’s 5-4, One Industries Ludo Boinnard’s 2-7 and Falcon impresario Pete Vetrano’s 6-5. MaxPower/ RPM’s Rick Peterson was running third until he sucked a rock into his chain and deposited himself into a lawn chair for the afternoon.

REM head honcho Frank Thomason.

In other important class: Willy Amaradio won the Over-50 Master class; Tim Murphy’s 3-1 held sway in the Over-40 Experts; TV Holmes swept the Over-50 Intermediates; Tony Blood’s 1-2 earned him the 250F Intermediate win over Colton Udall’s 3-1; Michael Lieb won both the 85 Open and 85 Expert classes over Nick Paluzzi; Nate Murphy used a 2-3 to take 250F Beginner (moto winners Billy Musgrave and Jack Susseev couldn’t match Murphy’s five points); and Scott Lindley was the Vet Junior winner.

Ludo Boinnard and Tim Olson compare notes.

The next REM race will be on July 8th at Glen Helen (and marks the start of the Summer Series). For more info call (858) 484-1441.
