Justin Keeney And Larry Brooks Win REM Glen Helen

ÿ

Dennis McAdam (39) leads Kent Reed and Ray Pisarski in the Over-50 Intermediate class. McAdam won, Pisarski was third and Reed was fifth.

Glen Helen’s REM regulars were in for a treat when Karl Scanlon brought his AMA National track crew to work on the REM track this weekend. One of the benefits of being a track builder is that when you show up at a track to race, as Karl did, you can guarantee that the track is perfect. Karl brought his own water trucks, Cats, tractors and discs to help REM promoter Frank Thomason out (in truth, Karl’s equipment is already at Glen Helen working on the National track for the September 9 race).

What did Karl get for his troubles? He was run over Dennis Boulware in the second Over-50 moto.

WHO WERE THE BIG WINNERS?

Justin Keeney won both moto of the 450 Pro class with Justin Mace going 2-2. Completing a KX450F sweep was third place finisher Rhett Vrseth (5-2).

Former 125 West Supercross Champion Willie Surratt, switching from Yamahas to Kent Reed-sponsored Kawasakis, won the Vet Pro class over Willie Musgrave.

Blake Harbor went 2-1 in the 450 Intermediate class to beat Shaun Hillion’s 1-2.

L&M team manager Larry Brooks decided to race the Open Pro class instead of the Over-40 Master class and won it ahead of Justin Mace (1-4), Adam McGaghren (3-3), Willy Musgrave (7-2), Kellen (4-5) and Paul Needels (6-6). ÿMeanwhile, Derek Brooks moved up from the minicycles to win the 125 two-stroke class, while brother Davin was second (behind Cory Shepard) in the 250F Beginner class.

Billy Musgrave moved all the way up from a YZ125 two-stroke to a CRF450. The 14-year-old looked like a whip antenna at times, but he won the 450 Junior class ahead of Jordan Burns, Kyle Smith, Craig Cheever, Luca Nastrini, Cole Ralston, Ray Obermeyer, Brandon Peterson, Mike Fox, Caden Probst, Mark Taylor, Ryan Edwards and Justin Forsyth.

Rick Peterson won the Vet Beginner class on a Christini CRF250 al-wheel-drive bike. Peterson went 2-1 ahead of Chris Cullins (1-2) and Mike Probst’s 4-3.

AMA Hall of Famer Feets Minert is still racing at 76 years old. The former Catalina Grand Prix winner still races in jeans after all these years.
