MOTOCROSS ACTION’S WEEKEND NEWS REPORT: GLEN HELEN ESCAPEES CAPTURED WITHOUT SPINNING A LAP

ASHLEY FIOLEK OUT OF THE X GAMES

Ashley missed the X Games last year with an injury, but she has scored the gold before (in 2009 and 2010).

According to ESPN, Ashley Fiolek has decided not to compete in the X Games this week. She suffered a concussion three weeks ago, and was unable to be cleared to race at Budds Creek, and now her doctors have advised her not to ride at the X Games. Fiolek says that she has suffered seven concussions in her racing career.

BOTH INMATES WHO ESCAPED FROM CUSTODY AT GLEN HELEN ARE CAPTURED

Two inmates who escaped from custody at Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center, over the hill from the Glen Helen motocross track, have been arrested, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. Steven Gallagher and Jonathan Mundo both escaped from the Glen Helen jail last Tuesday. Gallagher was in custody on charges of robbery, conspiracy and assault with a deadly weapon

Jonathan Mundo was taken into custody in Highland on Thursday, while Steven Gallagher tried to leave the country. United States Marshals contacted the authorities in Mexico, and on Thursday Gallagher was located in Tijuana, Mexico, and handed over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials and they released him to Sheriff’s investigators.

STEFAN EVERTS VIEW ON THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS VERSUS THE USA: WHO’S THE BIG FISH NOW?

Stefan dreamed of America, but he couldn’t pull the trigger.           Photo: Ray Archer

“I did six Supercross in 1992 to try it. It was always my dream to go there. I planned to win the World Title in 1992, but then I had my spleen injury. Then, my plan to move to the US got changed. In 1993 I was second again, but to me it was important to be World Champion before going to the USA. In 1995 I won again and then it was Dave Grant (Stefan’s agent) who convinced me not to go. I’ll never forget the words he said to me, ?Better to be a big fish in a small pond than a small fish in a big pond.’ And he was right.” Moto Magazine, June 2012.

RYAN VILLOPOTO: GRAND PRIX RIDER?

Ryan Villopoto?not a student of the sport he excels at.

When Ryan Villopoto was in Europe recently he told people that he wanted to race the FIM World Championships..in a few years. Villopoto also was quoted as saying that he only wants to race in America for three more years.

Villopoto also erroneously said, “No other leading America rider has ever moved to Europe to race, there have been American’s here, but not an American Champion, and I would like to be the first.” Sorry Ryan, but Mark Blackwell, Brad Lackey, Marty Smith, Broc Glover, Chuck Sun, Micky Dymond and Danny LaPorte were all AMA National Champions who raced full seasons in Europe. That would make Ryan the eighth American Champion to race in Europe.

Marty Smith not only raced the GP circuit, but he did it while racing the AMA Nationals at the same time. No rider in history has ever attempted that. Talk about a travel schedule.

MXA WRECKING CREW’S WEEK: AS WE KNEW IT AND WILL KNOW IT

John Minert between assignments…he flies out again on Thursday morning.

Amazingly enough, we didn’t get to ride very much this week because we actually had to go to work. Well, not all of us. John Minert went to Italy to test the 2013 Husqvarna’s and Dennis Stapleton went to the Phillipines. John had a great time, got a ride at several different Italian tracks and came back all jet-lagged on Thursday. He leaves again next Thursday for another test riding trip.

The 2013 KTM 250SX at Gorman. Yes, that is Alias gear. No, it’s not for sale yet, but it’s getting close.

Back home the rest of the gang spent Tuesday at the Gorman track testing the 2013 KTM 250SX two-stroke and then split our time at the office before racing the 2013 250SX and the 2013 350SXF at Glen Helen over the weekend.

Dennis Stapleton ? professor.

Two MXA test riders, Dennis Stapleton and Sean Kranyak are in the Philippines for a race, where Stapleton did three motocross schools over the last few days. MXA test rider Daryl Eklund has taken over for them while they are out of the country. Even MXA has to have fill-in riders.

Which just leads up to starting on the 2013 Kawasaki KX450F test early next week at Zaca Station. Stapleton will fly in from the Philippines that morning and look as jet-lagged next week as Minert did this week. We want to get some testing in at the Piru track on Wednesday and then we have a Thursday test at Glen Helen.

Billy Musgrave before his karting accident at California Speedway.

Billy Musgrave is still recovering from his kart accident, which broke his femur, but is up and around…although still out of action for a couple months. Billy is a 250 Pro and a kart Champion.

John Basher (23) on MXA’s project Yamaha WR450.

And then, back to the regular grind?except for John Basher who is a judge at the X Games and will miss riding next weekend.

THE BIKE THAT NEVER GOT RACED! WE RIDE RYAN VILLOPOTO’S UNUSED 2012 AMA 450 NATIONAL BIKE

THE RED BUD REPORT: WHO’S HEALTHY AND WHO’S NOT

Dean Ferris: Australian GP rider Dean Ferris will be out for four months. Ferris dislocated his shoulder at the French Grand Prix and needs surgery on it. After the operation he will be out for at least four months. Marc de Reuver will replace Dean Ferris on Kimi Railonnen’s Ice1 Racing Team this year.

Tyla Rattray: Since we’ve seen Tyla out riding when we’ve been testing we think that he will be back in two weeks at Red Bud. Tyla is filling in for Ryan Villopoto at Team Kawasaki. is ready to return to action.

Ryan Villopoto: Ryan will not be coming back for the 2012 AMA Nationals. The soonest we could see him at a race is the MXDN, but most likely the Las Vegas Monster Energy Cup race. And that could be iffy.

Tommy Hahn: The Honda team hasn’t had much luck and their most recent fill-in rider, Tommy Hahn, broke a finger at Colorado. He could be ready by Red Bud.

Max Nagl: The German GP star has sat out the complete GP season so far. It has been five weeks since his last back surgery and he is unlikely to return any time soon. KTM has given his bike to Ken De Dycker. Nagl does not have a contract signed for 2013.

Chad Reed: Word on the street is that Chad is ready to start riding in July, although not racing. He may want to race the MXDN for Australia.

Trey Canard: Trey will be back for the 2013 Supercross season.

Ryan Morais: Ryan was injured in the crash with Trey Canard at Dodger Stadium. He is doubtful until 2013…at the soonest.

Dean Wilson: Had shoulder surgery after Hangtown and will not be back during the 2012 AMA Nationals.

Darryn Durham: As with Dean Wilson, this Pro Circuit rider also had a shoulder injury that will cause him to miss most of the AMA 250 Nationals.

James Stewart: Obviously James’ wrist was good enough for him to finish in fifth in the first moto at Mt. Morris, but not good enough to compete at his full speed. Now, with four weeks since his June 2 crash in Colorado, he will be healthy by Red Bud. Will he return?

Cole Seely: Cole suffered internal injuries at Salt Lake City and will probably sit out the rest of the 2012 Nationals.

Christian Craig: Christian Craig is Cole Seely’s teammate at Troy Lee Designs. Christian tried to race this year, but needed to stop in order to get his wrist fixed. He will show up at Red Bud in two weeks.

SPEAKING OF INJURIES, GANNON AUDETTE RETURNS TO RACING AFTER NINE MONTHS OFF

2012 AUSSIE SUPERCROSS NEWS: SERIES IS BACK ON ? WITH AMA FORMAT

After last year’s Australian Supercross series ended, the promoters pulled the plug. Low spectator turnouts and bad weather had made the series unprofitable. Luckily, a new group, International Entertainment Group (IEG), has picked up the gauntlet to take the 2012 Supercross series over.

Among their plans are a four-race series to be held this winter, but one round mated to the Phillips Island MotoGP race is still tentative. In other news, the Aussies have finally given up on their gimmicky multiple-race formats (that changed on a week-to-week basis) and will now adopt the exact same format used in the AMA Supercross series with timed qualifying, two heat races, one last chance and a 20-lap main for the 450 class (and 15-lap main for the 250s). There will also be a minicycle series held at the same races, and the track will not be tamed down for the kids (although the promoter says that he will include a Sunday race on a tamed down track to help more Aussies get used to the demands of Supercross for the future). The 2012 Australian Supercross Series will kick off on October 13 in Dubbo.
