Remember the story of the 2004 Harley-Davidson FXSTB Softail motorcycle, recovered on the coast of British Columbia after drifting for more than a year and 4000 miles across the Pacific Ocean following last year’s tsunami in Japan. It was found in a shipping container of British Columbia’s Graham Island at low tide. It’s owner was traced by the Japanese license plate. The bike belonged to Ikuo Yokoyama, who said. “Since the motorcycle was recovered, I have discussed with many people about what to do with it. I would be delighted if it could be preserved in its current condition and exhibited to the many visitors to the Harley-Davidson Museum as a memorial to a tragedy that claimed thousands of lives. I would like to thank all people around the world once again for their wholehearted support of the areas hit by the earthquake and tsunami.

The bike has since been transferred to Deeley Harley-Davidson in Vancouver and plans for its transportation to the Harley-Davidson Museum are being developed.

OSHA MAY SOUND LIKE A NEW SANCTIONING BODY, BUT IT’S FAR FROM IT

OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration, is a division of the U.S. Department of Labor. OSHA inspects businesses to make sure that the working conditions are safe…and they have made their way to the AMA National pits. OSHA had a series of complaints and suggestions about fire extinguishers, ladders, flammable fuel, hazardous substances (race fuels, aerosols, chemicals and lubricants) and no smoking areas, but here is an OSHA rule that will hurt:

No individuals are allowed to spectate from the roof areas of transporters, unless those areas are enclosed in OSHA approved guard rails and that any access to these areas by either ladder or lift gate meets all state and federal OSHA guidelines. OSHA inspectors recommended that at any time when an individual is required to access the rooftop of a transport vehicle, that an on-the-ground spotter be present.

STILL MISSING! RIDERS WHO WON’T BE AT FREESTONE THIS WEEKEND

In the “year of the fill-in rider,” the stars, rank-and-file and privateers keep getting hurt…as do the fill-ins. So the starting line at Freestone will be missing a few players, most notably, Reed, Villopoto and Canard.

Chad Reed: Not coming back this year and needs  the time to try and find some new sponsors for next year.

Ryan Villopoto: When we saw him at the races last week he looked fine, but his knee isn’t.

Justin Bogle: Knee surgery, but he will be back.

Dean Wilson: Pro Circuit has been testing with Dylan Epstein as a fill-in, but Kawasaki wants to keep him at the amateur level until after Southwick. Dean’s shoulder is messed up.

Darryn Durham: Darryn injured his shoulder at Comp Edge and has been repalced by Ivan Tedesco (who himself was replace during the Supercross series).

Tyla Rattray: Tyla finally got what he wanted to move to the 450 class?it was glorious two laps at Hangtown before a rock broke his knuckle. He will definitely come back…no matter what.

Cole Seely: Cole was seriously hurt at Salt Lake City and probably will miss the series…no weat, he has a contract for next year.

Trey Canard: Although up and about, Canard isn’t coming back this season.

Ryan Morais: Ryan was actually hurt worse than Trey Canard in their Los Angeles Dodger Stadium crash. He is still recovering.

Other notables: Austin Stroupe, Sean Hackley, Josh Hill, Kyle Partridge, Christian Craig and P.J. Larsen.

ZACH OSBORNE JOINS ZACH BELL AS NEW GEICO HONDA RIDERS FOR 2013…THAT ONLY LEAVES ZACH FREEBERG & ZACH JAYNES UNSIGNED ON TEAM ZACH

As was already announced about two months ago, informally by the jungle drums of the motocross world, Zach Osborne is leaving the GP circuit for a second shot at the AMA circuit. Zach will join the Geico Honda team for 2013 to race the 250 class. At the moment Osborne is injured and waiting to heal up…until then Michael Leib has beenfilling infor him at the Bike-It Yamaha 250 GP team.

“I get to join the team in October and start preparing for 2013,” Osborne said. “I’m super-excited about it. It’s an awesome opportunity for me to be a part of such a great team like Geic Honda. I got a decent taste of Supercross this year, but it’s good to know I’m going home to race full time and make a real run at a championship.”

The arrival of Zach and Zach, Geico says that it will add amateur Zach Bell to its pro team starting at Southwick later this season, which could mean that someone is leaving the Geico team for 2013. Obviously, one person is Justin Barica?who is moving to Team Honda and the big-time 450 class. That leaves Justin Bogle, Eli Tomac and Wil Hahn. Put on your team manager hat and make a decision. How do you make room for Zach and Zach? Who do you drop? Do you have the money for five riders?

REM WILL BE BACK TO ITS ANCESTORAL HOME THIS SATURDAY, MAY 26

This new up-and-over hill is a nod to the original Arroyo track which had three blind hills. It has two levels and will use the lower level to the left and to the upper level to the right.

After being forced to move from it cozy home perched on a hill at Glen Helen Raceway Park while the Red Bull X-Fighters transformed the REM motocross track into a freestyle arena. The work has begun to turn it back into a motocross track. The plan is to host the homecoming for the REM racers this Saturday…so the riders can be reunited with their home track. REM has been racing on the USGP track during the interim, but have been gnawing at the bit to get back on the old Arroyo Cycle Park track (upon which the REM motocross track is built). RED BULL X-FIGHTERS GLEN HELEN IS ON NBC THIS SATURDAY 2:00 P.M. EASTERN

Red Bull X-Fighters held the largest outdoor freestyle event of all-time on Glen Helen’s REM race track. The TV show will be hosted by Sal Masekela . In the end, one competitor will top the podium and earn points toward a season-end championship. DRC AIR PUMP FOR NEW AIR SUSPENSION FRONT FORKS

The news is barely dry on the printing press about the 2013 KX450F’s Kayaba air forks and already DRC has a suspension air pump developed for new (2013) front air suspension equipped models. Specially designed gauge for the new air suspension shows accurate air pressure with a max of 3.5 bar or 50 psi. Long stroke designed for fewer pumps (approximately 60 pumps per fork leg). Long air hose and air valve attachment for easy operation. Optional swivel valve hose available for Renthal FatBars.

There is a micro-adjust button for precise air pressure adjustment. Anti-air leak design on valve attachment prevents leakage when disconnecting from the suspension air valve. The retail price is $59.95.

NEW IDEAS ARE STILL FLOWING… THE FIRST NEW ENGINE OF 2013 ? KTM 250SXF
With the manufacturers tightening their belts, new designs are few and far between. There will be an all-new Honda CRF450 engine, but it hasn’t been released yet. The KTM 450SXF has a new engine, but the “Factory Edition” was released as a 2012 model. So, that makes the KTM 250SXF the newest of new (until next week). See it here.

The 2013 KTM 250SXF engine is built around completely new high-pressure die-cast (instead of sand cast) cases. This means thinner wall thickness and lighter weight (in part thanks to the lack of any kick start bosses). The double-overhead-cam cylinder head features Ti valves and finger followers. It mimics the design philosophy as the 350SXF engine. Compared to last year the 2013 250SXF has larger ports, reshaped combustion chamber, larger intake valves (32.5mm instead of 30.9mm) and a new camshaft.

The piston is a Konig bridge-box design and has a 2mm larger bore (78mm instead of 76mm) ? this gives more room for the bigger valves.
 
The new crankshaft has a 2.5 mm shorter stroke and carries less inertia for more spontaneous power delivery. The 250SXF crankshaft is fitted with a Pankl connecting rod featuring a plain bearing (no more needle bearing), which allows higher rpm and less maintenance. Max rpm is 14,000 with the rev limiter set at 13,400 rpm.

The 44mm throttle body has the injector nozzle located underneath the venturi, because KTM’s engineers believe that the bottom of the venturi is where the fuel velocity is at its greatest

The six-speed gearbox is adapted to the new engine design and provides the same final gear ratios as its predecessor. The gear ratios are 13:32, 16:32, 17:28, 19:26, 21:25, 22:24. The final ratio is 13/50.

GIUSEPPE LUONGO ON HOW THE RIDERS WERE MISLED INTO STRIKING IN MEXICO…PLEASE TELL US, WAS IT THE COMMIES OR THE PINKOS?

Is Luongo saying that there are subversives in his happy vision of Grand Prix motocross or that it’s not as happy as he makes out? We believe the former, not the latter.

Giuseppe said, “During a difficult moment we were able to realise who our true partners are, because during complications normally a true partner tries to help you solve problems, not put banana skins under your feet, but sadly this was what happened. The reason why the riders didn’t want to race the qualifying races on Saturday had nothing to do with the security of the track, because Saturday’s track was fine to race on; there was just some dust in two corners (total of about 100m) during the morning practice, which, on the request of the riders, was well watered. But not one of them went to see that this corner was okay.

“The reality is that after the two practices on Saturday morning many riders were exhausted because it was hot (32ø), dry (30% of humidity) and the altitude was close to 1700m and they wanted to avoid the qualifying race, so they used the excuse of the track to save their energy. The fact that many team managers were not present, the riders were easily manipulated by some people present in the paddock who, with their short vision, did not think about the damage they would cause.”

OSSA WAS ON A ROLL…BUT NOW THE WHEELS HAVE FALLEN OFF

Remember the very cool Ossa 250cc enduro bike that was shown to the public a few months ago? Everybody went gaga over Ossa’s reverse cylinder, fuel-injected, snake pipe two-stroke. Built on the foundation of its equally modern 280i Trials bike, Ossa was the darling of the motorcycle world.

Well, all that good work has been wiped out by the electric Ossa Monocasso urban motorcycle. It’s weird, goofy and ugly. Even worse, the name “Monocasso” is used because the designers claim that it is an updated version of the original Ossa Monocasco that was road raced in the late ?60s by Santiago Herrero.

Herrero was true racing hero, who raced his 250cc Ossa single, in a monocoque aluminum frame, to tremendous success in the 1968, 1969 and 1970 FIM 250 Grand Pirx road race series. His single-cylinder Ossa made 20 horspeower less than the factory Yamaha twins of Phil Reed and Bill Ivy, but Santiago Herrero won GPs and was actually leading the 1969 250 World Championships going into the last race?only to crash out and end up third for the year. Sadly, Herrero and his Ossa Monocasso crashed at the Isle of Man in 1970 and Herrero was killed. This Spanish hero deserves more respect than to have his name attached to an electric city bike.

TEAM OHLINS/LANGSTON/KTM IS NOW LANGSTON-WITT RACING (LWR)

Grant will have to put duct tape over the Ohlins logo on his jersey and truck for the time being.

Team Ohlins/Langston/KTM is now Langston-Witt Racing (LWR). According to a press release from Grant Langston’s KTM team, Ohlins is no longer part of the team. Langston had a Supercross-only deal with suspension supplier Ohlins and that contract was not renewed for the AMA Nationals. The Langston team will keep racing, while it makes plans for 2013. Team owner Scott Witt said, “We all worked really hard to keep this deal in place, but we just could not get it done. It has been great working with Stacey and all the Ohlins guys. Our team has really benefited from their expertise,” Witt said.
