IF A TWO-STROKE IS GOOD, ERIC POHLMAN’S YZ-B IS TWICE AS GOOD…THE “B” STANDS FOR BANSHEE

The question isn’t how do you get a Banshee engine in the YZ250 frame, it’s where do you get a mirror image Pro Circuit exhaust pipe?

We think that Eric put on the three gallon enduro tank so that he could ride for more than 15 minutes at a time.

MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: RAPTOR TITANIUM FOOTPEGS & PRO CIRCUIT HEAT SHIELDS

RAPTOR TITANIUM FOOTPEGS: Raptors pegs are manufactured using the latest techniques in hand-fabrication and laser cutting technology, which creates perfect grip on the top teeth and increases strength due to the aerospace grade material and expert welding craftsmanship. Raptor Titanium Footpegs are lighter than stock pegs. Retail price: $359.95.

PRO CIRCUIT HEAT SHIELDS: Four-stroke engines produce a lot of heat, and the gasoline in the tank can lose its combustibility because of it. In some cases, the gas can reach its boiling point inside the float bowl. Pro Circuit’s gold and silver heat shields self-adhere to the bottom of your motorcycle’s gas tank to reduce operating temperature for better performance. The gold shield reflects up to 950 degrees (a 70-degree drop in temperature), while the silver shield provides a 150-degree drop in temperatures. Plus, the silver film is cheaper. Gold shield ? $68.95, Silver shield ?$49.95. To order go to www.procircuit.com.

THE NEW MXA IS OUT NOW! YOU GOTTA GET IT

The February 2013 issue of MXA is on the news stands now.

It has a very special shootout between two of the most exotic production bikes made ? the TM 250MX and the TM 300MX.

Also in this issue is a complete breakdown of how much horsepower each 2013 450cc bike makes, with complete dyno charts, a full breakdown and pages of easy-to-read charts.

If you own a KTM 450SXF, you will want to read MXA’s Performance Guide for the 2013 Katoom.

Are you old enough for the World Vet Championship, if you are you will want to read about the escapades of Ivan Tedesco, Ryan Hughes, Doug Dubach and Travis Preston. Plus, we tell you how to get more power from your CRF450 with a little twist and get a feel for a full-race Yoshimura Honda (and Mike LaRocco came along with us to do the riding). ASK THE MXPERTS: WHY? OH WHY?

MXA test riders choose their gearing from the wall of sprockets.

Dear MXA,
It is rare when MXA doesn’t recommend lowering the stock gearing in every bike test. Does MXA own a sprocket company?

No, we don’t own a sprocket company, but we do know that the stock gearing selected by the factory engineers isn’t solely for motocross use. The factory engineers don’t know if the end buyer will use the bike for trail riding, desert racing, play riding, motocross or cross-country riding. Thus, their stock gearing choices are a compromise setting that attempts to satisfy every type of rider who might amble into a dealership. MXA gears its bikes for motocross racing only.

USED IT, ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: SPECBOLT 250-PIECE HONDA CRF BOLT KIT

Specbolt is a 250-piece kit that includes almost everything you would ever need for your CRF250/450. Including bolts for the cases, clutch perch, brake fluid reservoir caps, float bowls, plastics, fenders, number plates, magneto covers, cases, coils, fuel tanks, radiators, fork guards, triple clamps, handlebar clamps, brake calipers and chain rollers. Specbolt makes identical kits for Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki and KTM owners

VERDICT: Specbolt uses 10.9 grade, zinc-plated bolts which exceed most standard motorcycle and ATV manufacturer’s specs. We were impressed to find crush washers for both the oil drain plug and water pump bolts. Additionally, the chain adjuster bolts were well thought out, as were the shoulder bolts for the radiator shrouds and fork guards. The only missing parts were the seat bolts, axle nuts, brake rotor bolts and oil drain bolt. $49.95 (250 bolts), $29.95 (120 bolts), $14.99 (bodywork only).?www.specbolt.com or (770) 363-6580.

USED IT, ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: UFO PLASTIC YZ125/YZ250 RESTYLE KIT

The UFO Plastic YZ125/YZ250 restyle kit is a complete makeover in a box. It turns the outmoded Yamaha two-stroke from frumpy and inelegant to modern and sleek. The $229.95 kit includes radiator shrouds, side panels, front number plate, rear fender and front fender (all designed and drill to fit on the two-stroke’s chassis). The UFO pieces are based on the current YZ250F plastic.

VERDICT: With the exception of the need to transfer the aluminum collars from the stock YZ125/YZ250 plastic to the UFO parts, every piece of the UFO Restyle kit bolted on with ease. Not only did every part line up perfectly, but the quality was superb. We ordered a graphics kit from Decal Works that fits perfectly on the UFP parts and were amazed in the transformation of the overall look of the bike. We must admit that the edgy YZ250F design isn’t our favorite look, but the stock YZ250 plastic is vintage at best. $229.95?www.ufoplasticusa.com or (815) 756-9400.

FROM THE WORLD OF WEIRD: SUZUKI CARS SALES CLIMB AFTER THEY GO OUT OF BUSINESS

2013 Suzuki Kizashi.

Who would buy a car from a company that was closing all of its dealerships and decalring bankruptcy? Who knows, but Suzuki will import about 2500 more autos to meet demand that jumped after the company filed for bankruptcy . Suzuki’s auto sales rose 22 percent in November to 2224 units. Dealers reported that sales also climbed in December because of generous incentives and a seven-year warranty program. Suzuki will eventually sell about 22,000 cars in the USA this year. That may sound good, but in 2007 they sold 120,000.
