MOTOCROSS ACTION’S WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: WHY JEFFREY HERLINGS HAS NO INTENTION OF MOVING TO AMERICA IN 2013

WHY JEFFREY HERLINGS WON’T COME TO AMERICA ANY TIME SOON… EXCEPT ON VACATION

Jeffrey Herlings has two good reasons why he will stay in Europe.               Photo: S. Taglioni

Jeffrey Herlings is the odds-on favorite to win the FIM 250 World Championships in 2012, but what most people don’t know is that whether or not Jeffrey beats Tommy Searle in 2012?he will most certainly win the crown in 2013. So, any plans about the United States will be on hold until at least 2014.

How so? Two reasons:

REASON ONE: Under a weird FIM rule, once a rider turns 23-years-old he has to move out of the FIM 250 class (and move to the 450 class). Guess who will be 23 skiddoo in 2013? If you guessed Tommy Searle, you are correct. But, did you also guess third in 250 points Jeremy van Horebeek or fourth in points Joel Roelants. Three of the top four riders in 250 World Championship points will not be eligible to race the 250 class next year.

It doesn’t take a genius to see that KTM and Jeffrey Herlings will not pass up a “gimme” World Championship so that Herlings can move to America.

REASON TWO: Jeffrey Herlings knows that he was no match for Ken Roczen in 2011 (don’t forget that Ken Roczen is the current FIM 250 World Champion), and if Jeffrey couldn’t beat Roczen and Roczen can’t beat Baggett, Tomac or Barcia?then it makes no sense to come to the USA now.

Add in the fact that KTM doesn’t need him as much in the USA as they do in Europe and you have a compelling case for Herlings staying where he is. Roger DeCoster already has Roczen and Musquin and they are both just getting their feet wet in the the AMA series. It’s true that they are struggling in 2012, but they could develop into powerhouses in 2013.

So, don’t keep the porch light burning for Jeffrey Herlings…cause he isn’t coming, except to visit Disneyland.

2013 HUSKY TR650 TERRA ADVENTURE BIKE USES BMW POWERPLANT

Husky Terra.

Husqvarna has all-new Dual-Purpose platform for 2013. The TR650 Terra and TR650 Strada are capable of being both urban commuters and weekend trekkers. The asphalt-oriented Strada and its dirt-road counterpart ? the Terra ? will be available in North America as early as Fall 2012. The TR650 Terra and Strada feature a 652cc single-cylinder DOHC motor, based on BMW’s venerable G 650 GS engine. A modified EFI system, redesigned cams, higher compression and revised piston and cylinder head increase the power output of the TR650, allowing it to boast 58 horsepower.

Husky Strada.

The tried and tested BMW G 650 GS liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, dual overhead cam overhead cam, 652cc engine was extensively modified for use in the two new Husqvarna models. These mods include a revised electronic fuel-injection system, altered camshafts and high-compression piston. Among the differences between the Terra and Strada are the wheel type and tire sizes with the Terra sporting spokes while the Strada rolls on smaller-diameter cast aluminum wheels. Another key difference between the two is that the Strada gets BMW’s ABS Anti-lock Brake System.

DAVE DESPAIN QUITS THE AMA HALL OF FAME OVER THEIR HANDLING OF THE NOBBY CLARK AFFAIR

Dave on ESPN’s Wind Tunnel.

The AMA Hall of Fame put World Championship road race mechanic Nobby Clark into the AMA of Fame in June and, then, one month later they threw him out. Despain and many others have taken issue with the AMA’s hamfisted handling to the affair.

DAVE DESPAIN’S RESIGNATION LETTER

To Whom It May Concern:

This letter and the enclosed medal commemorating my induction comprise my immediate resignation from the Motorcycle Hall of Fame. I expect my name and picture to be removed without delay from all Hall of Fame materials and representations.

I take this action in response to the Hall of Fame’s unconscionable rescinding of the nomination of Nobby Clark, a motorcycling legend more than worthy of Hall of Fame membership. I believe we Hall of Famers have a special stake in the integrity of the institution and its nominating process. I have lost all faith in that process and, more importantly, in the individuals who apparently now control it.

I am deeply suspicious of media speculation that Clark’s “criminal record” is somehow grounds for the withdrawal of his nomination but given the absence of any clear and official explanation from Hall of Fame officials, that apparently is the brush with which Nobby is to be tarred. This raises a couple obvious questions: What changed in the short time between the announcement and the rescinding of Clark’s nomination and why would Clark’s “criminal record” be grounds for a blackball when that clearly was not an issue for a number of previous inductees who also have criminal records.

I suspect the answers to these questions, if they were truly known, would do nothing to restore my faith in the integrity of the institution, but in the end my resignation does not turn on those answers. Instead it is based on a simple and inescapable conclusion: given everything Nobby Clark has accomplished in this sport, if he doesn’t belong in the Motorcycle Hall of Fame then I sure as hell shouldn’t be in there.

Sincerely,
Dave Despain

MAX NAGL FIRED BEFORE HE EVEN DOES A GP LAP IN ANGER

Max Nagl. Photo: S. Taglioni

KTM will cut Max Nagl loose at the end of this season even though Nagl hasn’t raced yet in 2012 because of an injury. The German GP rider has been a KTM factory rider for five years, but that is where it ends. Nagl says that KTM told him that they will not be signing him for 2013. Nagl has not raced a GP so far in 2012 because of a back injury and surgery, but raced a German ADAC race the past weekend and may raced the Latvia GP this weekend. His place at KTM was filled by Ken DeDycker, but it is doubtful that DeDycker will be at KTM in 2013 either. Max Nagl said, “I was totally surprised by the news. Nevertheless, I would like to thank KTM for the past five years in the factory team. It was a great time with ups and downs and of course my wonderful success, the vice-championship title 2009.”

ASK THE MXPERTS: LOOKING FOR THE BEST YAMAHA WR450 MAP

Stripped and ready for part-time motocross.

Dear MXA,
I know that MXA has built a full-race 2012 Yamaha WR450F and I am trying to do the same thing. But, I am stymied by the mapping. I got the GYTR Competition ECU, but I don’t know how what map to put in. Can you give me your settings?

Since the new WR450F is an offroad bike, the stock ECU is not allowed to be reprogrammable. Luckily, Yamaha sells a $99 Competition ECU that can be reprogrammed to deliver more fuel and advance (or retard) the ignition. MXA‘s WR450 engine uses the new ECU and FMF exhaust system. To go with this pairing, we ran the second map down on the chart below. We went richer on the fuel throughout the chart and advanced the ignition in every window. Hope this helps.

MXA PRODUCT PROFILE: POLISPORT FOLDING BIKE STAND

“The stand’s portability makes it stand out. It’s high-strength for capacity and weight. You can power-wash the stand while you are washing the bike to keep it looking fresh. The side panels can be customized and removed for access for oil changes. You can even write on them with a dry-erase marker,” Polisport’s Oscar Azevedo. $89.95?www.polisport.com or your local dealer.

MXA PRODUCT PROFILE: WARP 9 OVERSIZED RADIATORS

“Our radiators are similar to other high-priced radiators, but we’re not raking you over the coals for them. The capacity is typically 25 percent more than stock. They have two or three cooling cores per side and are 20 percent deeper. We are running a 1.5mm aluminum, so they aren’t as easily tweaked as the stock ones. Most competitors’ are 1.0mm thick, and stock is 0.8mm thick,” Warp 9’s Kevin Tanis. $219.00 (pair)?www.warp9racing.com or (801) 699-7979.
